FAMILY OVERVIEW

PROGRAMMABLE OTN TRANSPORT

Multiservice L1 transport with integrated L2 services Apollo’s value proposition starts with transparent, low-latency, multiservice L1 transport. Apollo supports the broadest array of client interfaces, encompassing Ethernet (up to 400GE), Fibre Channel (up to FC32), OTN, SDH/SONET, and video client interfaces. To accommodate popular data services, Apollo also integrates L2 statistical multiplexing and packet switching alongside L1 transport. This includes all MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 services, including E-Line, E-Lan, and E-Tree.

Maximum channel throughput In heavy traffic situations, it is essential to extract the maximum capacity from each channel. Apollo provides software-controllable “knobs” to tune the modulation scheme, baud rate, and flexible grid channel width, to optimize the line rate — from 50G to 600G, with 50G increments — for the distance to be covered. Transmission occurs right at the edge of the non-linear Shannon Limit, so that no channel capacity is wasted. This reduces the number of transponders required for handling heavy traffic loads by up to 50%, thereby saving substantial capex.

Ride the technology curve with pluggable line rate upgrades One of the most exciting advances in optical networking are new DWDM pluggables, based on the 400GZR/ZR+ standard. These provide superior performance in metro applications and adequate performance for long haul. This is a perfect fit for Apollo, which uses pluggable transceivers in many of its transponder and muxponder cards. Apollo can continually ride the pluggables technology curve to deliver optical transport with the best price-performance available.

High-speed per-service encryption Layer 1 optical encryption is the only way to protect against interception by fiber tapping. Apollo L1OE adds zero latency, and can encrypt entire OTN channels or individual clients selectively. With an ability to extend key management to Enterprise customers, Apollo L1OE can be offered as a value-added feature for private optical network services.

PROGRAMMABLE DWDM ROUTING (OPTICAL LINE SYSTEM)

Ultimate wavelength routing flexibility ROADMs (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers) route wavelengths from one end of the DWDM network to the other under software control. They speed up service provisioning, and reduce capital costs by eliminating unneeded optical-electronic-optical conversions.

Apollo features one of the richest set of ROADM building blocks in the industry, to satisfy any network configuration, including:

• 2-degree to 20-degree nodes, covering both broadcast-and-select and route-and-select architectures.

• Colorless, directionless, contentionless (CDC) add/drop. Apollo’s state-of-the art contentionless module far surpasses the performance of previous-generation multicast switches.

• Fixed-grid and flexible-grid channel spacing.

• Optimized wavelength amplification and transmission for over 20 network nodes, without regeneration.

• WSON (wavelength switched optical network) signaling to dynamically reroute and restore wavelengths in the event of link failures, to maintain service level agreements.

• SSON (spectrum switched optical network) that uses flexible grid technology to advance WSON capabilities to entire bands of spectrum.

Unsurpassed end-to-end visibility Apollo provides unprecedented insight into the network’s optical health at all times. Proven algorithms convert integrated power measurements (no need for separate OCM cards) into OSNR and other parameters. OTDR modules report on the status of the multiple connections and splices along the fiber path. Managed by LightPULSE™, these unique capabilities allow operators to maintain their network proactively, eliminating the need for costly external test equipment, and reducing field maintenance.

Alien wavelengths and shared spectrum All Apollo optical routing and monitoring capabilities apply equally to Apollo native wavelengths or alien 3rd-party wavelengths. Apollo can even transport bands of alien/shared spectrum, providing ultimate flexibility for opening up the optical network to partnerships and innovative services.

PROGRAMMABLE OTN SWITCHING

OTN switching shuffles client-interface traffic between OTN channels under software control. Apollo OTN switching scales smoothly from 2T to 16T capacity per node, delivering the benefits of OTN switching applications from the access to the core. These include:

• Rapid software-controlled service provisioning.

• Maximizing channel fill by grooming multiple services onto a common wavelength.

• Employing ASON (automatic switched optical network) signaling to dynamically reroute and restore individual services in the event of link failures.

MODULAR WITH OPEN INTERFACES

Apollo lets you choose how to deploy your optical network; whether as an integrated solution, or as standalone subsystems – for OTN transport, OTN switching, or DWDM routing (optical line system) – for disaggregated, multivendor solutions.

In either case, Apollo is controllable through ECI’s Muse/LightSOFT network management and SDN control system, or using the controller of your choice via Netconf/Yang interfaces that exercise the capabilities defined by the OpenROADM MSA.
