From one Apna skool centre with 40 children it has grown into a network of 25 Apna Skool centres with more than 650 students. (It must be noted that the number of students keeps varying due the very nature of their parents’ work). The Apna skools are generally run from 15th October to 15th June every year in the brick kilns and construction sites at various parts of Kanpur city, Uttar Pradesh. This is also a period when brick-making activity takes place and construction activities are in full swing. Currently there are 672 students at 25 Apna Skool centres, of which about 45 % students are girls. Apart from education, Apna Skool activities include: Nutrition: Wholesome meals at every centre Basic Health Care School uniforms for all and sweaters in winter every year Excursion trip every year Regular Teachers meeting every month and teachers training workshop twice a year Periodic interaction with the parents of Apna Skool students Vocational –Training The Apna Skool library has around 1000 books ( Story books , painting books ) which are circulated in every centre to encourage the joy of reading among the students Short films( entertaining and educative) are shown at all the centres periodically Apart from regular teaching lessons, we in Apna Skool believe in over-all development of the child. Hence the emphasis is on learning through experience. In the past four months (January- April 2011) we have encouraged the students to participate in the yearly Science fair, taken them to educational and excursion trips to Agra, UP (about 285 km from Kanpur) and the Kanpur Zoo. Ongoing endeavor to do science with fun inspired from Shri Arvind Gupta’s collection of experiments to understand concepts in science has become a regular activity at all Apna Skool centers. A report of activities conducted during the months of January, February, March and April 2011 along with the student strength is given below. January 2011 1. Swami Vivekanand Jayanti on 12 th January was celebrated at all the centers. Teachers talked in brief about swamiji and his contribution to Indian Society. The students made a few paintings and wrote a few quotes from swamiji’s teachings which were displayed at their respective centers. 2. Republic Day on 26 th Jan 2011 was celebrated at all the Apna Skools with great enthusiasm, taking out ‘Prabhat Pheris’ on this occasion. A report of activities conducted during the months of January, February, March and April 2011 along with the student strength is given below.

January 2011

1. Swami Vivekanand Jayanti on 12th January was celebrated at all the centers. Teachers talked in brief about swamiji and his contribution to Indian Society. The students made a few paintings and wrote a few quotes from swamiji’s teachings which were displayed at their respective centers.

3. Teachers’ training workshop was conducted on 7th and 8th January 2011 with specific emphasis on the instruction of teaching methods followed by Apna Skool, to the new teachers of Apna Skool.

4. Health Care: Administration of Polio drops at all Apna Skool centers. Few children at the Dhamikheda Apna Skool center were having persistent eye problems hence Eye Test for the students at this center was conducted during the month of January.

5. Two poems written by students of Apna Skool center (Shailesh and Mamata from Dhamikheda Center) were published in ‘KhilKhil ’, a monthly publication brought out by Jagriti Bal Vikas Samiti.

6. Inspiring story: Kalimuddin, 10 year old student studying at Panki Padav Apna Skool centre is one of the most diligent children of Apna Skool with a very keen desire to be educated. His enthusiasm is particularly noteworthy as he also brings along, his two younger siblings to school in a makeshift pushcart riding it for abut 4-5 km everyday.
