Houston Economy at a glance Downturn worse than the 1980s - It took five years from 1982-87 to achieve the

percentage declines in drilling activity. This time around it has been 18 months

Houston GDP decreased by 3%. Houston suffered the worst drop among the

nation’s 20 largest metro areas.

Petroleoum exports 30%, Chemicals 27%, Oil and Gas extraction 7 %

Total Oil related Exports 64%, exports fell by 20% in 2015.

The strong U.S. dollar made goods produced and sold from Houston less

affordable, further reducing shipments.

75% of rigs lost – Texas. Smallest number of rigs in 67 years

10% Domestic Oil Production decrease

West Texas Intermediate oil from as high as $145 USD sunk as low as $12

USD per barrel

12 million square feet of sublease space is on the market( (1.1 MM SQ mts) –

1 and 2 WTC had a combined 4.3 MM Sq ft office space.

Mentoring Program

WHY?

• Provide a venue for successful professionals to give back

• Provide a forum to new/experienced OM professionals to

network and further advance their careers

• Enhance the post-certification value proposition for our

members

• Why mentoring circles vs 1:1 mentoring? We would like to

maximize the networking opportunity by bringing different

perspectives from different individuals in a variety of

industries and roles, thus enriching the mentoring

process.

WHO ARE THE MENTEES?

• Must be APICS members in good standing

• Operations Management professionals from several

industries, companies in the Houston metropolitan area

• 1-2 Grad students per mentoring circle

PROGRAM DETAILS

• A mentoring circle consists of one MENTOR and 5 to 10

mentees who gather once a month to learn from each

other and discuss developmental items

• A theme for each mentoring circle to be designated by

mentor. Each monthly session will preferably adhere to

the specific theme selected.

EXPECTATIONS

The expectations for Mentors are :

Commit to lead all 4 monthly sessions

Define the mentoring circle theme

Provide venue requirements in advance (projector, Wi-Fi, easels, etc.)

Work scheduling issues asap in order to re-arrange venue, etc.

Provide the electronic material for each session in advance

Mentoring circle will be evaluated by mentees at the end of program, this will

include mentor delivery, processes, food, location, etc.

EXPECTATIONS

The expectations for APICS Houston Chapter are:

Provide venue for mentoring circles

Provide all material required by mentor

Support mentor with any schedule changes (venue)

Cover the costs involved with the mentoring circle for materials, venue, books, etc.

Designate a lead mentee who can work/support mentor during the mentoring circle

Provide mentoring circle feedback to mentor

Any support required to deliver a successful mentoring circle

Lessons Learned

• Conduct a needs assessment with the local membership

• What topics do they want to see?

• What are their greatest challenges at work?

• Market early; at least 2 months prior to first mentoring

circle meeting

• Email blasts, Previews at PDMs, etc.

• Work out method of payment for mentoring circle

materials, etc.

• Frequent communication with the Mentors

• Do they need help with anything?

• How is their group going?

Mexico Chapter Mentoring Circle

• Project based Mentoring approach

• Projects seek to create a relationship between companies and APICS while

giving students an opportunity to work on a real-life project under

mentorship of a company senior leader.

• Projects have two objectives:

• Develop students skills and professional experiences that permit them to apply

and generate solutions trough Supply Chain projects environment.

• Support enterprises with qualified resources to improve Supply Chain practices.

• The final report shall include at least the following concepts:

• Initial situation: includes indicators, survey and mapping of the process, field

information.

• Analysis of the situation: approach to improvement area.

• Proposed solution: includes action plans, measurement indicators and follow-

up actions.

• References. Description of theoretical concepts that support the solution.
