“Let’s see this thing that has happened!” “When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other,

“Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord

has told us about.” (Luke 2:15)

Advent & Christmas Celebration: That ‘thing’ that the shepherds wanted to see

was Son of God in the flesh - a baby born the save all humanity! So great was

their excitement for the coming Savior that they all it a ‘thing.’ Interesting

choice of words!

As part of our Faith Family Christmas celebration of ‘this thing’ at Christmas we

are using the season of Advent and Christmas as a time of outreach to our

friends and family. “The Cast of Christmas” is the theme we are focusing on:

the prophets who foretold of Christ, the angelic messengers who shared the

birth of Christ, the lowly shepherds who were among the first to meet the Lord

Jesus, the wise men – and us. We are the cast of Christmas!

Each Sunday and Christmas eve will focus on one of these cast members and

how they help us accept and live the truth of Christ and Christmas. We are

asking you to pray for and then ask someone to join you for the season! To

help, your Evangelism Committee has purchased devotional books that you can

hand to your invitee to help them learn the truth about Jesus. Please don’t let

this opportunity slip by! Your simple invitation may result in another person or

family become a heaven-bound follower of Jesus Christ!

The success of this outreach effort depends of each of us being willing to reach

out to family and friends who do not have a church home! This is consistent

with our mission at Faith: "We are imperfect people, saved by grace, willing to

risk it all to share the Good News of Jesus Christ!" I personally ask you to

please pray for and invite someone to join you the Sundays of Advent!

Worship Survey & Second Service: I need to apologize to you for jumping the

gun on the potential second worship service at Faith. My October newsletter

article was premature in announcing this potential service for January - I am

truly sorry about that!

I would like to share the initial raw data from the recent Worship Survey sent

out by Council. All the surveys have been received and tabulated. We still need

to do a deeper look at what it means and review the comments. Not every

the other worship service? (This would assist in maintaining peace and unity among our

worshippers as well as assimilate new worshippers)

86 Yes 46 No

Based on the above and our current attendance, we are not planning to add a second

worship time in the near future. The Worship Committee will evaluate the comments

recommendations from the Council and Worship Committee. A second survey seeking

clarification and additional information is also possible. We appreciate your

participation in this and for the grace each of you has demonstrated as we try to

worship the Lord in a manner that pleases Him above all and is sensitive to the

desires of His people. Remember, worship is about praising God and bringing glory to

His name. This is our primary focus. - Pastor Jim

“Silent Night” The well know Christmas Carol, "Silent Night" was written in

1818 by Franz Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small

town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria.

Joseph Mohr was a young priest at the Church of St. Nicholas

in Oberndorf. As Father Joseph was preparing for midnight

mass, he was upset because his carefully planned music was

going to be ruined because the church organ was broken. (The

church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and

replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel) He soon learned that our

problems are God’s opportunities and that the Lord causes all

things to work together for good to those who love Him. It came

to his mind to write a new song, one that could be sung

organless. Before Christmas Eve, Mohr brought the words to

his organist, Gruber, and asked him to compose a melody and

guitar accompaniment for the Christmas Eve mass.

“Silent Night” was sung for the first time on December 24, 1818,

as a duet accompanied by a guitar. Not too longer later, a

gentleman came to the church to repair the organ. He heard

about the near-disaster and acquired a copy of the text and

tune. The repairman spread the new song throughout the

Alpine region of Austria. The song became very popular, sung

at various fairs and festivals. It even was sung at a royal

performance after a request from the king and queen, assuring

the carol’s fame.

Silent night, holy night,

All is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child.

Holy infant, so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Sleep in heavenly peace.

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,

Alles schläft; einsam wacht

Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.

Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,

Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

I am often asked what churches can do to grow. I have found myself repeatedly encouraging

congregations to engage in the kind of ministry Jesus did and reach out to the least, the lost,

and the left out in your community. I believe Jesus gives us this recipe for community ministry

in Luke 15 through the stories of the lost coin, the lost son, and the lost sheep. In Luke 15:8-

10, Jesus tells a parable of a woman who loses a single coin and turns her house upside

down to find it. When she finds it, she calls together her friends and neighbors to celebrate.

Biblical scholars point out that the monetary value of the lost coin was miniscule. Who among

us would waste our time searching for a penny?! And who of us would throw a party when we

found one?! From our perspective, it is just a coin of low value. But Jesus shares that what we

see as insignificant is in fact of great value in God’s economy! I have no doubt that our

church is full of Jesus-loving people who earnestly desire growth. But I also have a hunch that

the kind of growth we subconsciously prefer would be people who may look like us, talk like

us, think like us, and hopefully have capacity to be significant financial contributors. After all,

wealthy people who share our beliefs can really help the church. The poor, on the other

hand, seem to have little to offer. But what if the church desired to reach first and foremost

the people who had the least to offer and the most to gain? What would happen if instead of

focusing on those who would be most beneficial to the church, the church focused on the

individuals that we could benefit the most? From a worldly point of view, the poor may not

appear to be of great value to the church. But from God’s point of view, the least among us

is worth the passionate investment of our time just like the woman in Jesus’ story who

searched tirelessly for the lost coin. The Gospels are full of examples of Jesus’ care for the

poor. If the poor were important to Jesus, then they should certainly be important to us still

today. God is calling us to reach out to the least in our community in a meaningful way. Let’s

get serious about ministering to those who have the most to gain in Christ Jesus. And let’s

get creative and not simply default to a handout. Instead, take the time to invest in getting to

know the people that live all around us. Learn their names, become their friends, listen to

their stories, pray with and for them, and ask the all-important question, “How can we be a

blessing to you and your family.” And don’t forget to rejoice and celebrate what God has

done when the lost is found!

Angel Tree to Benefit Local Nursing Home Residents The Social Concerns Committee will sponsor an Angel Tree

again this year. This one will be a little different, as we are

partnering with the Guadalupe County Sherriff’s

department in their endeavor to proved a gift for every

resident in every nursing home. The Angel Tree will be in

the narthex, and each angel will contain a different dollar

amount that we are asking be donated to the cause.

Please take an angel and attach a check (made out to

Faith) for the amount written on the angel. Then place

them in the basket underneath the tree. Donations need

to be under the tree no later than Monday, December 9th. We will presenting

one check to the Sherriff’s Department. Thank you for helping share Christmas

cheer with those in need!

Preschool News Submitted by Preschool Director Sharon Stollewerk

THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

(as told to Ms. Stollewerk by the Preschoolers)

Once upon a time, it was hard for the Pilgrims to do all the rules of the

King and Queen in England. They couldn’t pray like they wanted to and

that’s bad. So they got on a big pirate ship called the Mayflower and

went into the water to find a new home. Storms came and made the

boat bend and got it all wet. All they had to eat was fish, white beans,

and chicken and dumplings. But they ran out, and some food got really

yucky. The Pilgrims got sick, and all the wives died. Soon they found a

new land called “Land Rock,” and they prayed to God when they got off.

They started building cabins out of wood and painted them grey, or

whatever other colors they liked. Then it started snowing, and snowing,

and snowing, and it didn’t stop! They couldn’t finish their houses or

painting them. There were giant snowballs everywhere, so they were

stuck inside all winter. Lots of them got sick with “seises” like chicken

pox, coughs, the flu, and sneezes and died from them. It was a really

bad winter. Along came Spring, and the snowballs melted. The

Pilgrims met an Indian man named Squash, and they became friends.

He taught them how to plant corn, go fishing and other things. The

Pilgrims taught Squash how to hunt bunny rabbits, deer, and buffalo so

they could make clothes. It worked out great. Everyone was so happy

they decided to have a big dinner called a feast. It lasted four minutes.

Do you want to know what they ate? Well here it is: turkey, steak,

hamburgers, corn on the cob, carrots, broccoli, salad, onions,

cupcakes, cherries, pudding, butter beans, pancakes, mushrooms, and

bacon. The kids played games like matching game, hide-n-go-seek,

checkers, I Spy, Simon Says, Duck Duck Goose, freeze tag, and bunny

hop. They said a prayer to Jesus because they were thankful for getting

across the river so fast, and for all of their food, and just because they

loved God. And that is how it all started.

The preschoolers are thankful for their Mommies and Daddies,

Grandmas, brothers and sisters, doggies, friends, goldfish, story books,

toys, and cheese. The entire staff would like to express how very

thankful we are for all of our wonderful families and the congregation

that continues to love and support us. We count you as our special

blessings! Happy Thanksgiving from the Preschool!

PRESCHOOL JOB OPPORTUNITY

Faith Lutheran Preschool is seeking a personable and mature individual who relates well to children and

adults to serve as a Teachers’ Aid for the 3 Day a week preschool class. A college degree in education is

preferred with a minimum of two years of experience working in an early childhood classroom or setting.

Please contact Director Sharon Stollewerk at 379-7074 if interested or for more information.

Dear Friends of Faith Lutheran,

I again wan to thank you for the W.F. Lange Seminary Scholarship. It was a great financial blessing in my final year of seminary. I graduated on June 1st from The Master’s Institute with my Master’s in Divinity. I am currently serving as pulpit supply in two LCMC Congregations in California. One is near my home in Upland and the other is located in the central Valley near Fresno. I am grateful for both of these opportunities to serve the Lord and to love and minister to His people. I am starting the LCMC certification process in order to be prepared for a call. I would ask that you pray for that process, as well as the congregation where I might be called. On a personal note, it is nice to have more time to spend with my family and friends. To work again on things that have deep meaning to me, such as church banners, pastoral stoles and quilts for critically ill and terminally ill children—all things that I was unable to do, as seminary was so demanding. I would like to thank you for your prayers, they were felt! It was your prayers and the prayers of others that carried me through the intensity of seminary life. May the Lord bless your ministry and your continued desire to support seminary students, Peace and Joy, Debbie Taylor
