St. Peter School News

Nurse’s Notes

Hand washing Review. Now that school has started, and there are after school snacks, many afternoon and evening ac-tivities with treats, it helps to review good handwashing tech-nique. Having clean hands is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to oth-ers. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands correctly. When washing hands, wet them with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap. Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. These hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in some situations, but do not eliminate all types of germs. Hand sanitizers are also not effective when hands are visibly dirty. To use hand sanitizers correctly, apply the product to the palm of one hand, rub your hands together and then rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. For more tips, see http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/hygiene/index.html.

There are hand sanitizers at all the entrances of the church and chapel for parishioner use and on the table in the chapel sanctu-ary for Eucharistic ministers to use. Hand sanitizer dispensers and packets continue to be available for Eucharistic minister use in the main church during Mass.

Parish nurse office hours are by appointment. Call if you would like to come see me to make suggestions or to talk about health or wellness ideas or concerns. Please let us know if you or a family member is hospitalized or homebound and/or if you would like me to visit, pray with you and assist you with ques-tions and health care concerns. You may contact me at 636-8159x369 or via email [email protected].

Hurricane Harvey tore through Texas, ravaging the coastal area with flooding, tornados, and immense damage. The Texas Catholic Conference sent an update stating that the Catholic Church in Texas is coordinating its response through the bishops of the 15 dioceses. At this time, cash contributions are of greatest need. Donations can be made to any Texas Catholic Charities or local St. Vincent de Paul Society. Money sent to Catholic Charities outside of the coastal area or inland areas experiencing damage will be used to assist evacuees or sent to dioceses direct-ly affected. To find information on how to send in dona-tions, please visit the Texas Catholic Conference website. Please follow @TXCatholic on Facebook and Twitter, and on the Texas Catholic Conference website at txcatholic.org to stay updated on how you can assist our sisters and brothers in need. Pray for Texas!

Answer the Call to Serve!

Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?”

That is exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy for him-self by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded right in and helped. “I took on the troubles of the troubled,” is the way Scrip-ture puts it. Even if it was written in Scripture long ago, you can be sure it’s written for us. God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scrip-ture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next. May our dependably steady and warmly person-al God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we’ll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmo-ny in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!

We are the FAMILY of a living Father. Therefore, the Social Concerns Commission WANTS YOU to be family working side by side for those in our community. We will serve at the Sa-maritan Center, clean up neighborhoods, assist our school, and be the hands and feet to a world that needs us! We will plan special celebrations too!

Please come to a “Meet and Greet” with members, share ideas, cultivate relationships, and live out your faith in planning and doing! St. Peter Social Concerns Commis-sion meets Wednesday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Notre Dame Room. Refreshments will be served!

So reach out and welcome one another to God’s glory. Jesus did it; now you do it! Jesus, staying true to God’s purposes, reached out in a special way to the Jewish insiders so that the old ancestral promises would come true for them. As a result, the non-Jewish outsiders have been able to experience mercy and to show appreciation to God. Just think of all the Scriptures that will come true in what we do!

Have questions? Considering the Social Concerns Commis-sion? For additional information, please contact Christina Smith by sending an email to [email protected] or by call-ing 301-1545. Alice Kuehn is also available by sending an email to [email protected] or by calling 636-8159.

Let’s live out our faith!
