Christmas 2012

From His Eminence

Archbishop Demetrios of America

From our President Alice Noplos

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

- Philippians 4:13

Dear Sisters in Christ,

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given: and the gov-

ernment shall be on his shoulder: and his name shall be

called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Ever-

lasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

What a wonderful season we have upon us, as we near

the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Just as the

swaddled babe brought hope and peace to the world over

2,000 years ago, we should continue to carry that hope and

peace in our hearts. Christmas is a time that brings friends

and families together. It’s a time when our very essence of

being is shown in a true light. We tend to give more to our

charities around this time. We tend to open our hearts to

our fellow man a little more. We tend to have a clearer vi-

sion on what’s important in life. These feelings should re-

main in our hearts and our minds throughout the year. My

wish for you all is that you keep the Christmas spirit in your

hearts throughout the coming years.

The year 2012 has proven to be a very active and pro-

ductive year in the life of the NSP. Clergy-Laity was the

highlight of the year, where many of us were able to be to-

gether, to meet as an organization, to share fellowship with

one another, to make new friends and to re-bond with old

friends. I have had the honor of traveling to various par-

ishes this past year and meeting so many of our lovely sis-

ters. My heart swells with pride to be your representative.

(President’s letter continued from page 1)

I am humbled by listening to so many stories, so many facets of life, so many concerns – all different, yet bound by a com-

mon denominator – our title of Presvytera!

Your 2012-2014 national board has had an outstanding beginning. We recently met in Baltimore, Maryland. The

Metropolis representatives are all excited and geared up to plan retreats and events in your area. Please lend them a hand

and offer to help with some of the planning. The more people involved on the Metropolis level, the more vibrant your Me-

tropolis will be. I would like to welcome Presvytera Evelyn Adams to our board as the representative for all retired Pres-

vyteres. Evelyn is excited to start this position and I ask that you welcome her and assist her in any way that you can. I

would also like to welcome Presvytera Vicki Toppses as our new chairperson for the Sister to Sister committee. Vicki

comes with us with much experience, as she has held this position before. I’m thankful to these two wonderful ladies for

becoming involved to help our organization grow.I have had the honor of traveling to various parishes this past year and

meeting so many of our lovely sisters. Καλά Χριστούγεννα!

Your sister in Christ,

~Alice

There is currently one position on the NSP National Board that is vacant. Please read below and let Alice

Noplos (443-417-0975; [email protected]) know if you are interested in taking it over. The Listening

Connection (TLC) is looking for a new chairperson. The Listening Connection is a ministry made up of

Presvyteres for Presvyteres. TLC is a network of independent volunteer listeners, each of whom is a Pres-

vytera. These volunteer listeners make themselves available at specified hours to receive calls from sister

Presvyteres. Through such calls listeners provide outreach, enhance fellowship, and promote friendship with other clergy

wives of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.

All conversations are confidential. Listeners cannot diagnose, advise, counsel, or provide treatment of any kind. Callers

seeking counseling or medical advice or who have specific clinical questions should contact a licensed professional. Lis-

teners are independent volunteers and are not employed agents or representatives of the National Sisterhood of Presvyteres

(NSP) nor are any affiliated organizations responsible for any acts or omissions of volunteer listeners.

Direct Archdiocesan District

by Alexandra Roll Plans for Presvytera’s Night Out in November were put on hold out of respect for those affected by Hurricane

Sandy. Many have been without power, water and some are repairing damages to their homes. The parish of Holy

Trinity has started an excellent collection. If you would like to help, please consider donating gift cards from home

improvement stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes, in $25 & $50 increments. Your donation can be sent directly

to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church/St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Staten Island, 1641 Rich-

mond Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10314. These cards will be distributed to the people and families of Staten Is-

land who are in need. Please keep our District and all those affected by this natural disaster in your prayers.

The Sisters of the Direct Archdiocesan District will be gathering together in the coming months for some exciting

events. In the late winter, we will be holding a Clergy Couples Lenten Retreat. This event will be open to Priests and

Presvyteres and will include guest speakers, lunch and childcare for clergy children in the form of a retreat. The fo-

cus will be finding ways we can continue to pay attention to our families and each other during Great Lent, a busy

time when we are typically giving ourselves fully to the parish and the people we serve.

In conjunction with May and the Month of Mother’s Day, we will be hosting a Presvytera’s Wellness Day! The

day will include lunch, manicures, quick massages, local merchants selling goods and a guest speaker/mini workshop.

The theme is the importance of taking care of ourselves, so that we can take care of others. In June we will host a

luncheon to celebrate our patron saints, Saints Martha and Mary.

In addition, we’ve selected a local charity to support. Our charity focus will help KIDS (Kids in Distressed Situa-

tions) – providing clothing, shoes and books for children in crisis or poverty. When we gather in fellowship, we will

ask those attending to contribute.

On behalf of the Direct Archdiocesan District Diaconises and Presvyteres, please accept our heartfelt warm

wishes for a blessed Nativity and a happy and healthy 2013!

Metropolis of Boston

by Eleni Klostri We hope this finds you all in good health and safe. Within our Metropolis, in the past year, we have had beau-

tiful times for fellowship and support and sadly, periods of loss. God willing we have been able to be there to remem-

ber, pray and support those we love. We will miss and pray for the families of Fr. Peter Katopis, Presvyteres Loukia

Bitzas and Maria George, Dr. Anthony Ziagos (father of Presv. Gloria and Fr. Demitri Costarakis), Michael Moody

(father of Fr. Chris and Presv. Victoria Moody) and John Barbas (father of Fr. Ted and Presv. Daphne Barbas. ) May

their memories be eternal.

In September, we had a great time with our new Seminarian Families. We host a welcome breakfast for

them each year; here are some pictures from another fun time together! We are also looking forward to our An-

nual Ladies Night Out in November, which needed to be rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy and subsequent

storms. Our cookbook Fasting, Feasting and Old Favorites, from the Kitchens and Tables of Presvyteres of the

Metropolis of Boston, unveiled last year has done fantastic in sales and we are proud to say we have sold out!

We were able to donate $1500 to the Saint Methodios Faith & Heritage Center, which is also where we look for-

ward to welcoming all of you for the National Retreat in October 2013.

Retired Presvyteres

by Evelyn Adams Greetings from California!

Recently I was approached by our President of the National Sisterhood of Presvyteres to serve as the

Chairman of the Retired Presvyteres. With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos and the sup-

port of my husband, Father James, I am happy to accept.

I hope I can fulfill the position as well as my dear friend, Presvytera Elle Dogias did.

I feel that it is important that we keep our Retired and Widowed Presvyteres informed of the issues and

news of the Church at large. I am therefore asking that each of you Retired and Active Presvyteres help me by

sending me any news within your families and parishes that may be of interest to our group.

Please feel free to send me any notice to my email address which is: [email protected] or call

me at 415-382-8091. I also will be relying on the assistance and help of the National Sisterhood of Presvyteres.

In closing Father James and I extend to each of you Active, Retired and Widowed Presvyteres and your

families a blessed Christmas Season with good health, joy and love.

APC/NSP BENEVOLENT FUND

by Pauline Pavlakos As we approach the end of the fiscal year, many people make contributions to their favorite charities. If you have not yet made a donation to the APC/NSP Benevolent Fund for 2012 please consider doing so. Additionally, we have two funds that are targeted to help widowed presvyteres in financial need: The Gregory Paleologos Memo-rial Fund and the Presvytera Stella Constantelos Memorial Fund. Donations are also being accepted to these funds. Please send donations to any of these funds, check payable to APC/NSP Benevolent Fund and noted to which fund the money should be deposited, to: Pauline Pavlakos, 6315 Wilmington Drive, Burke, VA 22015. A thank-you letter/tax receipt will be sent to each donor and listed in the NSP newsletter. If a donation is made to one of the memorial funds, donor names will be sent to the person in charge of the fund.

For the period February 14 through November 10, 2012, we have had 137 donations in response to the 2012 Gifts of Love Appeal and 1 miscellaneous donation totaling $9,160.00, a very generous $35,000 donation from the National Philoptochos, and 39 disbursements totaling $28,476.92. Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the Benevolent Fund.

If you are, or if know of someone who is, in financial need, please contact one of the four administrators of the fund (the presidents and vice presidents of the APC and NSP): Fr. Nick Anctil ([email protected]), Presv. Alice Noplos ([email protected], 410-817-9651), Fr. John Touloumes ([email protected]); or Presv. Pauline Pavlakos ([email protected], 703-239-2627).
