The ReverendPeter Bastien,

Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ, As we think about our celebration of Easter this year, let’s begin with this quote from Ira Progoff:

“As the Christian symbolism unfolds by means of deepening inner experience, it gradually becomes strong enough to work autonomously and express a power of its own within the person. Something much greater and more potent than the personal begins to establish itself. At that point the image of the Christ becomes not merely a doctrine that has been taught as a content of belief, but it becomes a living reality that reaches even beyond itself to give a quality of timelessness and universal meaning to the finite, temporal events of life.”

For me, the center of Easter is not a belief in someone else’s resurrection, but a leaning into my own resurrection. And I am not talking about my resurrection in eternity after I have died as I can have no idea what that might look like; I am yearning for my resurrection now--in the midst of the manifold forms in which death has infiltrated into what we call life. St. Paul, St. Augustine, and Martin Luther have convinced me that I can already now access the power of resurrection life in faith. Bultmann calls Easter “a faith event”--by virtue of my faith, Easter becomes a present event in my life now. Is this just “symbol talk?” Ahhh, yes, I have to constantly remind myself that we are empiricists, literalists, and materialists who think symbols and metaphors are less true than facts. As Dr. Mikial Sovick, my philosophy teacher in college, used to say (in his thick Estonian accent): “Ach, vat a blunder!” Facts are not truths, facts are facts Truth is the spiritual task of making something out of facts, building

Prayer Concerns something with facts. It is important to argue about the facts, to get them as right as we dunderheaded humans ever can, but not because they are the point! We must be careful about facts for the sake of the spiritual, moral, political, and aesthetic worlds we construct out of the facts. As Progoff says, “Symbols are vehicles, and therefore they are leading elsewhere.” We turn facts in symbols (H20 ends up as Baptism, the water of life) so that we can get “elsewhere.” Me? Well, I’m trying to get to resurrection. A real life. Have a Happy Easter, --Pastor Bastien

Upper Elementary Service Project

Please help our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders collect new and gently used children’s story and chapter books for The CARing Project. This is a service ministry of the Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland, College Park. Our youth will deliver the books when they attend SHEMA on April 19th. Bring your books to church and place them in the “book box” located in the narthex. Money donations will also be accepted in order to purchase more books.

SHEMA 2009 is a Metro DC Synod Youth event for 3rd-6th graders. This year it will be held April 19th, 1:30-4:30 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, MD. The theme is Oh, The Lessons You’ll Learn using familiar stories from Dr Seuss to help the children think theologically.

Sunday Readings CTS Council Meeting Summary, March 9, 2009

(Complete version posted on the CTS hall bulletin board)

ß Financial—Ernie reported that income for the year is below budget levels. This is especially true for loose plate. Chuck reported that expenses for the year are over budget after two months. As a result, our year-to-date budget account shows a deficit of $2,879.66.

ß Most of the equipment for the microphone system has arrived. The Worship Committee will install and set up the equipment.

ß The cost and extent of renovating the two restrooms was discussed at length, following a proposal from Rob Palmer, property chair. The Council approved a motion to proceed with repairs on restrooms, with funds coming from the property budget.

Respectfully submitted,Joanne Eater, CTS Council Secretary

ON CHRISTIAN WORSHIP: The Alleluia “Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying, ‘Alleluia.” (Revelation 19:6). Alleluia means “praise the Lord.” It is a cry of jubilation, the sound of pure, undiluted joy. We sing Alleluia to welcome and greet Christ, the bridegroom king, present in the proclamation of the holy Gospel. Alleluia says, “We recognize you, O Christ, and welcome you with inexpressible gladness.” The last syllable of Alleluia--”ia” (in Hebrew: “yah”)--is derived from the Hebrew Yahweh. In the Church’s ancient tradition of liturgical chant, this last syllable becomes a river of ecstatic sound, a prolonged cry that climbs above the zone of words. The Alleluia is sung in every season except Lent. On the last Sunday after Ash Wednesday, the Feast of Transfiguration, we “buried the Alleluia.” It will not be sung again in worship until the Great Vigil of Easter. Then, once again, it will frame our reading of the Gospel; it will also burst forth in our hymns and praises. It fills our hearts with the joy of new life. “Christ is risen. Christ is risen, indeed. Alleluia.” (From Mark Daniel-Kirby on the Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons, revised for Lutheran use by Pastor Bastien.)

Parish Care Ministry

Do you know about the Parish Care Ministry at CTS? Several years ago a new ministry area was created to help members of the congregation who need assistance. The need may be due to a medical crisis or ongoing situation, loss of job or home, economic downturn, personal burden, and many other reasons. From meals during recovery and rides to medical appointments to application for energy assistance, free medical care, etc., we can help out. There are many social service resources available in the Gaithersburg area that we can call on and hook into when appropriate. Jo Johnson shares her wealth of knowledge and experience with case management resources with the ministry.

You may not have thought of CTS as an avenue for help with your problems, but our focus is to CARE for all members of our PARISH however we may. You may talk with either Pastor Bastien or Connie Graf, chair of the Parish Care ministry, to let us know of your needs and see how we can help you. Please know that all conversations will be held in strict confidence. We may not know the answer, but we can search for it together.

SmarTrip cards – The Parish Care ministry would like to have a supply of SmarTrip cards on hand at CTS to provide for people who rely on public transportation and find the expense a burden. The SmarTrip card is a plastic stored-value smart card used for payment in Metrorail stations and on Metrobuses. .

The cards can be purchased at vending machines within many Metrorail stations, at Metro sales offices, select retail stores including the CVS store at 19100 Montgomery Village Ave., and online at http://www.wmata.com/fares/smartrip/. The purchase price includes $5 for the card itself plus an initial fare value, which varies depending on where they are purchased: cards purchased at stations cost $10 ($5 for the card and $5 fare value), while those purchased online cost $30 ($5 for the card and $25 fare value). The cards can be reloaded using farecard vending machines or using cash at fareboxes onboard buses.

If you purchase a SmarTrip card for CTS distribution, please mark it with its fare value and include it in your offering during worship. You may prefer to contribute money to be added to the fare value instead of buying a card. Please indicate “smartrip” on your check.

Thank you. Connie Graf

Film Buffs “The Pursuit of Happyness,” April 19--5:30 p.m.--in the Parlor. Please bring “movie food” to share. Will Smith (in an Oscar-nominated role) and his real-life son Jaden star in this tearjerker about a struggling single parent determined to build a better life for himself and his child. Chris Gardner is smart and talented, but his dead-end salesman job barely pays the bills. When he and his 5-year-old son are evicted from their apartment, they face trying times as Chris takes on an unpaid internship at a stock brokerage firm with hopes of getting rich someday. (2006) PG-13

Book Club

CTS Book Club reads Real American Ethics by Albert Borgmann on April 26--7:00 p.m.--in the parlor. America is a magnificent country that affords its citizens the broadest freedoms and the greatest prosperity in the world. But it also has its share of warts. It is embroiled in a war that many of its citizens consider unjust and even illegal. It continues to ravage the natural environment and ignore poverty both at home and abroad, and its culture is increasingly driven by materialism and consumerism. But America, for better of for worse, is still a nation that we have built. So why then, asks Albert Borgmann in this most timely and urgent work, are we failing to take responsibility for it? In Real American Ethics, Borgmann asks us to reevaluate our role in the making of American values. Taking his cue from Winston Churchill--who once observed that we shape our buildings, and then our buildings shape us--Borgmann considers the power of our most enduring institutions and the condition of our present moral makeup to propose inspired new ways in which we, as ordinary citizens, can act to improve our country. This, he shows, includes everything from where we choose to live and what we spend our money on to daunting tasks like the reshaping of our cities--habits and actions that can guide us to more accomplished and virtuous lives. Using prose that is easy and direct throughout, Borgmann’s position is grounded in neither conservative nor liberal ideology, but in his understanding that he is a devoted citizen among many. In an age in which the blame game is the only game in town, this book is an eloquent reminder of the political strength we all wield when we work together.
