SML celebrated National Scout Sunday on February 5th. All scouts in attendance received a special SMLCCS badge from Father Dan and garnered other meritorious badges during celebration of the Mass. Everyone, including older scouts, recited the scout pledge for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies and Daisies. Patrick Kearney of Scout Pack 108 in Medford organized this special event with the parish to honor our scouts for their good deeds and service to others.

We can all help the Church by praying for vocations. We have a Pray for Vocations icon of the Mother of the Eternal High Priest which parish families can take home after Sunday Mass, pray for vocations together every day for a week, and return the icon to the sacristy for the next family to pray the following week.

The number of priests may continue to diminish without our help and prayers! Sign roster on bulletin board outside sacristy if you can participate. Those praying for vocations this month are the Hess Family, the DelRossi Family, and the Finan Family.

There will be a workshop for all readers on Monday, February 27th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Emmaus Center. This refresher course is for all those involved in the Reader Ministry. As we prepare for the season of Lent, this is a good time to look at our ministry and our personal relationship with Christ. Respond by email to Sister Regina at [email protected].

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 21st, at 10:30 a.m. in the Emmaus Center. Please join in if you have an interest in knitting/crocheting shawls while

praying for those who are infirm, in chemotherapy, or have other illnesses. Members come together each month to socialize over tea/coffee, while sharing shawls and/or patterns. For more information, call Rosemary Peters at (856) 574-4098.

Stop by the Emmaus Center today, February 12th, after the 7:30, 9:00, and 10:30 a.m. Masses to visit with fellow parishioners and enjoy a hot or cold beverage with a doughnut or a delicious Medford Bagel Shop bagel. Gluten- free snacks will also be available.

The parish office will be closed in honor of President’s Day from Friday, February 17th through Monday, February 20th. School will be dismissed at 12:40 p.m., Friday, February 17th.

Something is lost

And cannot be found!

If you are missing something and can’t find it anywhere, maybe you brought it to and left it in church.

Check out our Lost and Found Bin in the Baptistry at the Jackson Road entrance. It contains an assortment of glasses, gloves, umbrellas, coats, including a boy’s leather jacket, and other items.

The Joy (Just Older Youth) Ministry invites ladies of the parish to participate in its Jewelry Exchange on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14th, at Noon in the Emmaus Center. Ministry Members and others will bring in a wide array of costume jewelry from which participants can choose and exchange for a piece of their own jewelry. A short devotional will be made to Our Lady, the true Queen of Hearts. Cookies, coffee, and tea.

Rather than placing special/personal prayer intentions in a basket in the Daily Mass Chapel, you can now write your personal intentions in a book that sits on a lectern located on the left side of the Chapel. Enter “personal intention” for privacy if you do not wish to place specific names or intentions.

SMLS honored Catholic Schools Week beginning Sunday, January 29th, with Mass in the Auditorium, followed by Open House for parishioners, families, students and newcomers. Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week has been the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Students took part in a pre-Mass program that focused on this year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service," demonstrating the value of Catholic education, what it provides young people, and its contributions to our church, our community, and our nation.

Matt Fish hits a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give SMLS a 51-48 victory over OLGC on 8th grader/Parent's Night at Ron Murphy Gymnasium (AKA “The Murph”). Friday, February 17th, will be a "White Out" game with white T- shirts for all SML students.

This Lenten season, our parish will be hosting Father Michael Sullivan, OSA, for a parish Lenten retreat. The theme of our retreat is “A Time of Grace.” The retreat will be the evenings of Sunday through Wednesday March 5th through March 8th.

Each evening, Fr. Michael will guide us through the evenings’ topic with humor and compassion, gently challenging us to continue growing in our faith. On Monday evening, March 6th, there will be an opportunity to go Confession. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this uplifting experience as we journey toward the glory of Easter.

Father Sullivan travels the country year-round providing parishes with unique and dynamic retreats. His mission schedule concentrates on the seven Sacraments. He makes his message known while adding a bit of humor and fun to the mission. Fear is not part of Father Sullivan's mission talk approach. People leave with a smile, his message well taken, and a feeling of pride in being Catholic.

I will be glad and rejoice in you I will sing

praise to Your name O Most High Psalm 9:2

Believe that I am with you and controlling all. When My Word has gone forth, all are powerless against it. Be calm. Never fear. You have much to learn. Go on until you can take the most crowded day with a song, “Sing unto the Lord.” The finest accompaniment to a Song of Praise to Me is a very crowded day. Let Love be the motive running through it all.

Be glad all the time. Rejoice exceedingly. Joy in Me. Rest in Me. Never be afraid. Pray more. Do not get worried. I am thy Helper. Underneath are the Everlasting Arms. You cannot get below that. Rest in them, as a tired child rests.

This retreat, which takes place on Saturday, March 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Maris Stella Retreat Center in Harvey Cedars, is an opportunity to develop a Celtic heart and you don’t even have to be Irish! Participants will experience a contemporary expression of the Celtic spirit through contemplative song, story, and ritual. We will metaphorically walk the pilgrim Journey of a Celtic Heart in the company of the Trinity, the angels, the famed Irish saints, including St. Brigid and St. Patrick, while always with Christ as our intimate companion.

Carmel Boyle lives in the heart of Ireland's Boyne Valley and her ministry is inspired by the sacred landscape and spirituality of her home. She is co-founder, with Dr. Geraldine Holton, of An Croí (the Heart) Wisdom Institute, a center of wisdom for personal, professional and spiritual life. She is an accredited spiritual director, supervisor, and an experienced retreat facilitator. Carmel also is an accomplished singer/songwriter and recording artist. Her voice has a healing quality that touches hearts, and her songs are simple and prayerful.

To register, call Sister Pat at (609) 494-2917 or email [email protected].

The mission of Religious Teachers Filippini is to “Go forth and teach the Word of God.” Their ministry is for the people of God who come to St. Joseph By the Sea for soul searching, trying to find peace in their lives and a God who understands them. On March 15th, they will offer a retreat entitled, Touched by an Angel.

To hear and trust God’s will, we need only to look at the life of St. Joseph as our example. Joseph was “touched by an angel” and entrusted with the care of God’s only Son. As we spend time with Joseph, we will look at our very own experiences of surrender and trusting the touch of God. Lunch and Mass included in the $45 cost. Arrival 9:30 a.m./Departure 2:30 p.m. Our presenter is Paulette Cicero, M.Th., CSD.

Feed My Sheep Casserole Ministry continues to need casseroles. We encourage students to participate in this ministry as a way to earn Confirmation service hours or National Honor Society hours. Three credit hours will be given per month for donations. Aluminum pans are available at the back of the church or the parish office.

Food must be frozen upon delivery to the parish office, Mon-Fri from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and must be homemade in order to get credit. Label the lid with the contents. Do not place the child’s name on the lid. Casseroles should contain some protein, such as chicken or beef. Pasta dishes are fine, but add protein to the dish!

Record child’s hours in community service log and bring it to obtain a signature when food is delivered. Service logs per grade (6th through high school) are available at www.smlparish.org under the Faith Formation tab. Email any questions to [email protected]. As a reminder, eighth grade Confirmation service hours must be completed by March 1st. The requirement is five hours of service completed with a parent, grandparent, or sponsor.

The date is Friday, February 24th at St. Isaac Jogues’ Holy Family Center Parish Hall. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and Bingo begins at 6:45 p.m. Ticket price is $30. Ten games will be called.

Includes one set of 10 Bingo Cards, coffee/tea. Tickets will be

available for 50/50s, basket raffles, and door prizes. Tables of eight may be reserved with prepays. For sale at the event: Daubers $1/each; Additional sheets: 10 for $10. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments. Must be 18 or older to attend.

The Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary holds its next meeting on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Emmaus Center. Women in the parish aged 18+ are welcome to join. One need not be married to a Knight to join—just willing to help in charitable activities. Contact Carolyn Karbasian at [email protected] or call her at (609) 714-0620.

If we have no peace, it’s because we have

forgotten we belong to each other.

One way to know your faith is to get a copy of The Rosary Comic Book by Gene Yang and pray a rosary while reading it.

One way to live your faith is to think of something frivolous in your life that you spend too much time on, such as video games or watching dumb movies, and give it up.

One way to share your faith is to look for Catholic videos on YouTube and when you find a good one, leave an online comment for the creator. Then forward the link to others.

To begin this process, take the following self-assessment survey. On a scale of 1-5, indicate how true each of these statements is for you. 1 equals “not true”; 5

“very true,” (Note: not everything is supposed to be “very true” for you. Answer honestly so you can get a true picture of your spirituality.)

1. The most important thing about my faith is keeping close to God.

2. The most important thing about my faith is being a good person.

3. The most important thing about my faith is that it helps me cope with life’s ups and downs.

4. My faith motivates me to serve others.

5. My faith brings me a lot of inner peace.

6. I pray a lot, and prayer helps me feel closer to God.

7. My faith helps me feel better when I am sad.

8. Because of my faith, I try hard to be straight with people.

9. For me, going to church is an important way to stay close to God.

10. God and I are close.

11. My faith guides my decisions about what’s right and wrong.

12. My faith helps me stay hopeful.

13. Because of my faith, I pay attention to when others need help.

14. My faith helps me heal from emotional hurts.

15. Nothing is more important to me than my friendship with God.

16. My faith brings me a lot of happiness.

17. I have a strong relationship with Jesus as my friend and savior.

18. Living in a loving way is the most important thing about my faith.

19. Because of my faith, I believe it is wrong to tell racist or dirty jokes.

20. My faith helps me deal with my anger.

21. I am always interested in learning more about God.

Score profile, (Vertical, Horizontal, Internal):

Vertical—Add up the numbers you gave for statements #1, #6, #9, #10, #15, #17, #21 Your vertical score is ____;

Horizontal—Add up the numbers you gave for statements #2, #4, #8, #11, #13, #18, #19 Your horizontal score is____;

Internal—Add up the numbers you gave for statements #3, #5, #7, #12, #14, #16, #20 Your internal score is ____.

There are three dimensions to Christian spirituality, and these three dimensions are symbolized in the cross. The vertical dimension

of Christian spirituality, symbolized by the vertical beam of the cross, represents the relationship we have between yourself and God

“above.” The above part is why we call it “vertical,” even though God is in others and inside ourselves as well. People with a high

vertical spirituality carry a tall cross, and invest most of their spiritual effort on improving or maintaining their relationship with God by

praying regularly, going to Mass, learning more about God, and/or participating in religious events, rituals and traditions.

The horizontal dimension of Christian spirituality, symbolized by the horizontal beam of the cross, represents the way your faith

motivates you to treat other people. People with a high horizontal spirituality carry a wide cross, and are always recognizing others in

need, helping out, treating people with respect and kindness, and stick up for the underdog. They actively form a strong moral

conscience about what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s noble and true.

The internal dimension of Christian spirituality represents the ways your faith helps you deal with the stuff inside. People with a high

internal spirituality invest most of their spiritual effort in coping with emotional issues, past hurts, and life’s ups and downs. People

with a strong internal dimension often have hope even when things don’t go well. They don’t give up easily, and they calm down

more quickly when they get frustrated or angry.
