Orientationby Upasana Sharma,first year student

Joining college may cause a lot of anxiety for new students due to the unknowns; Will I make any friend? How will I find all of my classes? Whom do I go to if I have a make any friend? How will I find all of my classes? Whom do I go to if I have a question? Orientation programs are designed to guide students to acclimatize them to the new environment and familiarize them with the University’s systems, and help them get their questions answered.

Our Orientation program started with an Ice breaking session. The students were divided into 4 teams. They had to guess the monument which was given on a piece of y g g ppaper. The students were provided materials, such as, plastic spoons, straws, paper glasses, tapes and Fevistick out of which they had to create a strong, tall and stable structure.

The next event was an a presentation of the University’s Regulations and Examination systems, discipline and anti-ragging measures, course plan, credit requirements and ti t bl h i f ll d b th l t f H bl Vi Ch ll f th

A Day Out of the Box:by Oshi Ubeja, first year student

“Mind is not a bucket to be filled; it’s a spark to be enlightened”. Albert Einstein

The visit to National Gallery of Modern Art ”NGMA”, Delhi gave the students an opportunity to study the work of great artists like AmritaShergill, Satish Gujral, Haris Bert, Rabindranath Tagore , MF Pithawala and many more. Each of them had their own style and technique. Ourfaculty guided us and explained to us the significance and differences of exhibits. Students also appreciated the structural beauty of thebuilding. We then moved onto the popular craft museum of Delhi. Situated at Pragati Maidan area, the craft museum offered a refreshingchange from the hustle bustle of the hectic city life of Delhi. It gave us an opportunity to know the rural surroundings that have beenpainstakingly created to imitate typical Indian villages. Everyone was thrilled to see the museum’s wide range of traditional and creative craftsp g y yp g y gthat ranges from terracotta horses to handmade jewelry from different tribes in the country. Crafts Museum with its beautiful setting, whichhas been designed by a renowned architect Charles Correa, taught us how simple materials like thatch to mud and clay can be used to createsuch marvelous and pleasing structures. Our faculty integrated assignments for us beforehand. For example, we were asked to write a review onan artist whose work influenced us the most. We took pictures and identified ordering principles from the images and discussed the materialsused in both the buildings. This exercise provided us great opportunities to reinforce the concepts that were taught in the class.3

Safdarjung Tomb and Delhi Haat, DelhiAt Safdarjung Tomb, the students were asked to delineate a plan and elevation of parts of the tomb ingroups. This increased their ability to apply and practice what they learned in the class and unleashed theirindividual potentials The students gained an understanding of materials and construction techniques in theindividual potentials. The students gained an understanding of materials and construction techniques in thehistorical context.

Later in the day the students were taken to Delhi Haat, situated in the commercial center of South Delhi, opposite INA market, which provided the ambience of a traditional Rural Haat or village market, one suitedfor more contemporary needs. Here the students saw a synthesis of crafts, food and cultural activitieswhich stimulated their minds and gave them an exposure to a completely differently designed space.

The students were also given an assignment to do a comparative study between Delhi Haat and SafdarjungTomb on the basis of elements like scale and proportion, materials, textures and landscape design.

Paint the Studio WallArchitecture is creative expression of ideas through the built environment. To explore thep g pstudents’ interpretation of architecture, walls of the design studios were adopted forstudents to paint and express what the word Architecture meant to them. Since “walls” are animportant component of any building, they became the natural canvas for paintings. Eachstudent came up with a reference of a building profile that fascinated them the most, paintedthem on the wall and the montage so created turned out to be an array of buildings from allover the world. It is a visual treat to see the collage of so many amazing buildings together at

l Th ll t lks f th lib f th st d ts f A hit t ith t s ione place. The wall now talks of the caliber of the students of Architecture without saying aword. Students expressed their thoughts in speech blurbs on the walls about Architecture asa learning platform. The painted wall now stands proud as a marker created by talentedarchitecture students of first year.
