SECOND COLLECTION SET FOR MOTHER’S DAY

in all parishes throughout the United States to support the

National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception’s dome pro-

ject. This is a special one-time collection to support the mo-

saic ornamentation of the Trinity Dome, the “crowning jew-

el” of the Basilica. The mosaic will depict the Trinity, Mary

and 13 saints associated with the United States or the nation-

al shrine, the four evangelists and words from the Nicene

Creed. The finished dome will mark the completion of the

national shrine which is set to mark its centennial in 2020,

the 100th anniversary of the placement of the foundation

stone. The U.S. Catholic Bishops approved this special

collection at their annual fall meeting in November 2015.

My dear Parishioners,

One recurring question throughout our life is: “Is change possible?”

In other words, can I shed my bad habits, change my attitude and

the way I act or react to people and situations that occur in my life?

A daily or weekly examination of conscience reveals too many

times that we keep falling back into the same old, same old. Well,

there is hope; we really can change if we truly want to change. But

it takes a lot of effort on our part and, most of all, the grace of God,

which is never lacking. The thing that holds us back and prevents

us from making progress is the weakness of our will, our lack of

determination—not so much to make the effort, as to allow the

Spirit of God to go to work within us. The door that open us to

change is our willingness to let God direct our lives. Yes, change

is possible; the story of the transformation of the first disciples that

we read about in the Sunday scriptures of Easter Season can stimu-

late and reinvigorate us. For example, the change that we note in

today’s First Reading that occurred in Peter the Apostle astounds

us but it can also encourage us. The Spirit that changed Peter is still

around and is just as powerful today. Just a thought as we journey

toward Pentecost.

— Fr. Jerome, C.P.

2017 Catholic Home Missions Appeal - April 29-30 The Catholic Home Missions Appeal takes place today. One way that this appeal works to strengthen home mission dioceses in the United States is by funding the formation of their seminarians. Seminarians are a blessing but the cost of their education often places a financial burden on poor dioceses. Your support helps lighten that burden. Please help strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to today’s appeal. Thank You!

a. Escuchar las enseñanzas de los apóstoles,

b. La vida común

c. La fracción del pan y
