AoC London Region Members’ Bulletin 08 April 2011 Issue 92 Feedback from Heads of Student Services meeting, Wednesday 6 April AoC London Region held a very well-attended Heads of Student Services meeting on Wednesday 6 April at Westminster Kingsway College. Chris Walden, Public Affairs Director, AoC provided a policy update on EMA, Learner Support Fund and the Bursary. The PowerPoint slides are attached to the bulletin. Colleagues discussed how different Colleges were planning to deal with the new arrangements and Chris Walden agreed to raise a number of the points with the Department for Education. Further details of the meeting will be circulated shortly. There was also a detailed discussion on the Consultation on 16-19 years in Education or Training; the comments at the meeting will feed into AoC’s consultation response. AoC National intends to send their response as soon as possible and will share it with Colleges to help them with their own responses. Attendees were also asked to consider if they were interested in setting up an AoC Regional network for Heads of Student Services. If you would like to be part of this network, please get in touch with the office . Serious Youth Violence Workshops AoC London is undertaking a project to identify good practice in communications between Colleges and police intelligence units, youth offending teams, LAs and other partners. The aim is to come up with a common set of principles or template for managing such communications. The project is funded by LSIS and the work is being carried out by Peter Smith, a former police superintendent with extensive experience in this field. We are running three workshops facilitated by Peter, the last workshop will take place on Monday 11 April from 1pm-4pm and there are still a couple of places available so please let us know if you would like to attend. AoC London Region Sixth Form College funding meeting AoCLR are hosting a Sixth Form College funding meeting with SFA and YPLA on Tuesday 12 April 2011, 3pm-4.30pm at AoC offices, Stedham Place. AoC London Regional Committee Election 2011/12 This week the AoC London office have emailed a letter and self-nomination form out to all Principals and Chairs from London Colleges, and to ensure that we reach as many of you as possible we have also sent the same letter and form out to you in the post. If you would like to nominate yourself to stand for the Committee, the self nomination form needs to be returned to our office by Wednesday 20 April 2011. If you haven’t received an email or letter informing you about this election please contact the office and we will send something the details out to you.
WorldSkills London 2011 GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO GO TO CHINA AND APPEAR ON CHINESE TV, RESPONSE NEEDED BY 13 APRIL! The link below will probably get you into the video site more quickly. The intention is to include UK students in a May broadcast. http://www.facebook.com/notes/worldskills-london-2011/amazing-showcasing-opportunity-for-uk-students-in-china/10150151690094230 WorldSkills London 2011, working with the British Council in China has been asked to introduce you to a fantastic programme and broadcast opportunity on CCTV-1. This is a great opportunity to showcase UK talent to a worldwide audience - but you will need to respond very quickly. The programme is a little bit similar to the UK famous programme "Britain's Got Talent", however the focus is on children aged under 18. The series will consist of 10 episodes and it will be filmed in early April 2011 and broadcast in the May holiday. The programme will be broadcast once a week via CCTV-1 in prime time. It is a large studio talent show, and talented children under 18 will be invited to participate either by singing, dancing or any other talent performances. However, it's not a programme only for children, and CCTV-1 intend to attract more children and their parents to watch. And the aim of the programme is to provide a stage for children to show their talents and let them grow in confidence. Information at your fingertips:

Have a Go activities Fran Hubbard, the WSL2011 Have a Go Manager, is absolutely delighted with the response from London Colleges in the run up to the closing date for Have a Go activities at the Event. As with the showcasing applications, you’ve all come up trumps again, with most of you being represented in one or other of the two activities. ‘I have been completely overwhelmed by the response,’ Fran said, ‘The variety and originality of the activities offered gives us tremendous scope to demonstrate the range of skills we were hoping for in a way that should really engage our visitors’. Have a Go activities will also take place outside the Event from now until October and details were given about the link to the WorldSkills site in the last bulletin www.worldskillslondon2011.com/haveago. This is another opportunity to bring the excitement of WorldSkills into your college by badging any planned events with a Have a Go element in them as part of the national campaign. Team Selection Event for WorldSkills London 2011: 14-17 June The UK Squad which was announced at the AoC Conference last November will now go through the final selection procedure to identify the members of Team UK to compete in October. Selection takes place over four days of competition at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, Stephenson College and City College Coventry. At the end of this period, we will know how many of Team UK come from London Colleges. If you want to find out more about the profiles of competitors, these are available on www.worldskillssquaduk.org. If you are interested in seeing what happens at the top level of competition prior to the Event, there will be some opportunities to visit on 16 June. British Council Internship The British Council will this year be running a summer internship programme in London. This opportunity is open to young people aged 18-25 and each internship offers an opportunity of work experience in an organisation with global reach and impact. A contribution will be made

TV company sponsored ‘Creativity in Media’ programme looking for new London student applicants for 2011-12 The Sparks panel was set up in 2008 between the South East Gifted and Talented Excellence Hub and ITV Studios, and is now looking for new London and South East students between the ages of 16 and 21 for this year’s panel. Run by Ignite, experts in creativity development panels and training, the programme selects 20 gifted students each year to take part in 4 training workshops and subsequent creative sessions for TV companies and brands. Students are given skills and training in lateral thinking techniques, innovating products, presenting ideas and how TV shows are developed, sold and made. The training prepares them to then be catalysts in creative workshops on live projects for companies ranging from ITV, to Coca-Cola, Clearasil, BBC Radio 1 and EMI across the year. At the end of the scheme students emerge with a portfolio of projects, a record of skills learned, a reference letter, and exposure to potential employers and job opportunities in media. The panel is keen to recruit diverse students from all backgrounds with an interest in media. British Champions again! Congratulations to HCC’s Men’s Basketball team and coach Andrea Norton! In a close and exciting final against Loreto College Manchester, Hackney Community College won the British Colleges Sport cup. Again! Final score: 92 – 81! Hackney Community College’s sports academies – most notably basketball - have notched up a string of successes over recent years. Academies for both men and women give students the opportunity to train hard and compete in high profile competitions. Many go on to play professionally – in the UK or abroad. Academy members can study any course at the college and only stay in the team if they are up to date with their main coursework – a great motivation for success on and off the court!
