Page | 1 ANZ BANKING GROUP RETIRED OFFICERS’ CLUB (N.S.W.) ABN 19 337 817 538 Welcome to our October 2020 NEWSLETTER CLUB REPORT TO MEMBERS. A big welcome to all members, for our October newsletter. As was reported in our September NL, the Club is looking as to how we can in some format, recommence luncheons & functions going forward. The NSW Government & Department of Health, have recently announced some relaxation in Covid-19 restrictions, that apply to many businesses, including restaurants & Cafes etc., and we have fully assessed our position based on the restrictions that now apply going forward. Looking at our 2 categories we advise:- METRO There are still restrictions on No’s allowed in Club’s and other venues function rooms, with obviously strict social distancing rules still in place, that unfortunately limits the Club’s ability to arrange functions at this point of time. We are still working on the Hub basis for Metro members, and we hope to have arrangements in place, and commence in first months of 2021. ANZ TOWER SYDNEY We reported in September NL, that ANZ Tower Sydney had been in lockdown since mid March 20, with no external visitors allowed. We have just been advised by ANZ HQ, that some minor relaxation for entry of external visitors, was applied from mid October. Strict social distancing rules are in place and a limit of no’s that can be in rooms in the Tower at any time. At security entrance on ground floor, any visitor obviously will be ID, and have temperature taken, and if not in range set, maybe refused entry to the building. The functions rooms, on level 24 have a limit of 20 people at any time, and this with all other factors taken into account, and as we previously advised, there will be no Christmas Cocktail function this year. That members is a brief outline of where we are at present, and we certainly moving to recommence Metro luncheons, hopefully on Hub basis in early 2021. COUNTRY CHARTERS Most of our Country Charters have recently contacted us again, and confirmed that after further contact with members in their district, they confirm that no end of year function will be held this year. We will be following up with the remaining Country points in next couple of weeks, to ascertain what the position is in their area, and if they are able to arrange a function before years end, the Club will provide support to members who attend any function arranged.. 2020 has certainly been a very difficult & challenging year for everyone in the community & businesses, but hopefully we are now seeing light at the end of tunnel, and we can all move forward, obviously in a different manner to what existed prior to March. Emphasizing what we have stated previously, that taking into account the age category of the bulk of our members, we all fully appreciate each individuals decision in this regard, and as the Club has always stated, when this all began way back in March, the Health & Safety of our members is paramount, and we will always continue to act solely in this direction, with any decisions made for the Club. Members, that is a brief update of position, and hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we are working very hard, to achieve us getting together again as a group, in early months of 2021. Now for the good news.

Club Financial Position. Club Sub’s 2021

We fully detailed in our February NL, that your Committee had approved a very generous level of support for both Metro & Country functions in 2020, which were to commence in March 20. Unfortunately due to the onset of the Covid-19 crisis in early March, we were only able to have 2 monthly luncheons in January & February at our old venue of the Boutique Hotel in Castlereagh St Sydney during 2020, and to date no functions have been held in Country Districts. Our only notable expenditure over the preceding months since March 20, has been for printing & Postage cost for our monthly newsletter. We have therefore conducted a full & comprehensive review of the Club’s BSHT & Bank Account, and your Committee has approved, that in 2021 we will not collect, 2021 Sub’s ( $10) from members who are normally required to do so, to maintain membership. Members please look after yourself & stay safe, and we will complete a final newsletter in November for 2020.

    Bereavements

    Jim Pearson

We were sadly advised that our esteem member Jim Pearson passed away at Broadbeach Queensland, where he lived on 15 October aged 88 years.

Jim spent many years service in ANZ in Sydney and was Manager of several branches, and would be well remembered by colleagues from his time who worked with him.

Jim’s funeral service was a private family affair held on 16 October.

Our sincere condolences to his wife June and family.

    RIP Jim.

Greg Raby It is with deep sadness that we have been advised that former ANZ Officer Greg Raby has passed away on 21st October aged 58 years from a brain tumor. Whilst Greg was not a member of ANZROC (NSW) he would be very well known to a lot of members from his time in ANZ, and specifically when he was a Regional Executive in Corporate Banking in NSW. Greg is survived by his wife Vicki and his 2 children Aimee and Chris. Greg’s funeral was held on:- Tuesday 27 October and due to Covid-19 restrictions no’s were mainly limited to family members.

    Sincere

condolences from all Club Members to Greg’s wife Vicki, Aimee & Chris and all his family.

    RIP Greg.

    Brendan Egan.

Our Welfare Officer Ken Dighton received the following email our member Col Paff (Lismore) regarding the passing of Brendan Egan.

I knew Brendan from my time in Esanda – he was a good bloke and a character: I regret to advise Brendan Kevin Egan passed away on 09/10/2020 aged 70 years. Brendan was not a member of ANZROC. He started in the ES&A bank in Mount Gambier in 1967 and worked in ANZ and Esanda Finance in a number of branches in SA and also Alice Springs before being transferred to Lismore NSW in the

early 1980’s, he later went to Newcastle then back to Lismore as Esanda Manager. In 2001 he became a self employed finance broker in partnership with a number of fellow ex-Esanda Managers and retired 30/09/2019. He is survived by his wife Helen and 3 children. There would be some ROC Members in NSW who remember Brendan.

Sincere condolences from all Club members to his wife & family.

    RIP Brendan

    New Members

Great news, we have a new member who recently joined our Club.

A big welcome to Lawrence Cox from Mount Martha in Victoria.

Lawrence had a long period of service in NSW before migrating down south to Melbourne, from where he retired.

Many members would remember Lawrence from his time in ANZ in NSW, and it is great to have you on board and all the best from Club members.

Welfare Report Ken Dighton – Welfare Officer Report for October 2020 Sick List: We wish these members (and any others for that matter whose health is not going well) good luck and a comfortable recovery:

Clieve Lennon – Clieve recently spent 2 weeks in Westmead with a recurrence of his lower leg problem. Thankfully there was no infection this time, and he is now at home in recovery mode. Keep up the good progress Clieve.

Brian White – Brian suffered a torn retina and was forced to go to Sydney Eye Hospital for surgery. He was very grateful for the wonderful assistance of his optometrist who initially drove Brian up to Sydney outside of hours for the first visit to the surgeon (both returning to Wollongong later that night). Good old-fashioned service indeed. Brian said his eye is “coming good”, but it may be some weeks before it is back to normal.

Bill Chapman – Bill caught his lower leg on the car door (Clieve can truly sympathise here) and was required to have it stitched. The healing process was a bit slow at first but the wound is mending now.

Phil Newsome – Past President Phil said some irregularities showed up in his last PET scan, and he is undergoing further tests. Dialysis is still working satisfactorily and generally he feels well. Incidentally, Phil mentioned that Helen is continuing to get positive MRI results, which is just excellent news.

Barry Gibson (now of Meadowbank) – although he is no longer on the sick list, Barry said that his wife Barbara is continuing with chemo (it has been a Trojan effort for Barb over the past 11 months, and we all wish her well). It will be noted that they have moved from Marsfield (after 51 years).

Peter Simpson – Peter said his hip appears to be mending satisfactorily, although he is still using a walking frame most of the time. His OT “ladies” are happy with his progress. He has been very fortunate to have had the invaluable help of his sister since quite early in the piece. She is however heading home to the mid-North Coast next week so he will have to row his own boat soon.

Ian Auld – Ian had a coronary issue a couple of weeks ago and was admitted to hospital. He had some stents inserted, but he is now at home recovering and taking things quietly for a while. Best wishes Ian for a full recovery.

I made contact with the following members, who enjoy the esteemed title of Honorary Member, to extend best birthday wishes and hope for a happy and healthy year ahead:

John Ball (85) – John said he is keeping quite well. He is remaining active, and that includes the men’s singing group with which he has been associated since 2006. They perform mainly for, and are well appreciated by, senior citizens in the Central Coast area.

Kevin Cameron (85) – Kevin said he had a reasonably busy day on the 14th, including a full driving test which he passed in style. He said he is essentially “flying high” after some 50 days in hospital last year – he keeps active with lawn bowls, a walking group, and involvement in Lions (since 1961 whilst at ANZ Mudgee). Wife Jannette is unfortunately battling some health issues.

Ron Chillingworth (85) – I received a phone message from Ron to say that he is “fine with no health problems”. He was expecting to enjoy a nice lunch with family to usher in his 86th year. Enjoy the day and best wishes Ron.

Warwick Denton (86) – Warwick said he has “no complaints”, and both he and Anne are well and happy. He still enjoys swinging his golf clubs a couple of days each week. Birthday celebrations were low-key. Warwick passed-on his best wishes to ROC members, particularly the people he used to work with.

Brian Liebert (89) – Brian said it seems “the older you get the more you catch” (I assume that of course only relates to ailments and not things on the move!). Overall, his health is OK. He enjoyed a birthday lunch with his ex-Union Bank (we still have a few of those in our number) wife Betty at the “club next door”. Brian uses this establishment to keep his darts, table tennis and cards skills honed.

Al Campbell (82) – Al took it easy on his birthday with a nice lunch with family. He lives with emphysema but manages to keep active with golf and walking the dog.

  • Page | 6

John Brogan (84) – John is “going alright” – he has few ailments but he tolerates them. He no longer plays sport but he manages to occupy himself with gardening and a walking regime. His birthday celebration consisted of a nice family lunch.

George McKinnon (97) – George said he is “as fit as a fiddle”, and our conversation indicated to me that he is certainly that. He said the highlight of his birthday was a family day on The Clarence. George sent “regards to all, especially any old work colleagues”.

Colin Ticehurst (83) – Colin’s health is OK, but his mobility is not as he would like. His birthday celebration was moderate, but he and Yvonne recently enjoyed a few relaxing days in Tuncurry. Colin said he appreciates the effort that goes into the ROC Newsletter, which he thoroughly enjoys reading. Thanks Colin.

David Graetz (81) – David is quite well, although a recent cornea replacement was not successful, so he had to go through the procedure again. Fortunately, the second effort appears to have done the trick. The Covid19 situation has, as with most of us “older folk”, meant that David’s social activities have been curtailed, but he is planning a family lunch to celebrate #81 at the end of the month.

Bob Grant (81) – Bob celebrated by having “a great day and family get-together”. He said he and Nell are both well.

John Penn (81) – John is OK but struggling quite a bit with his mobility. I visited him for a cup of coffee and we had a few laughs about the “good old days” (I won’t elaborate here!). He still has a bag full of marbles and his sense of humour.

Allan Jones (98) – Alan sounded quite chipper when I spoke with him on his birthday. We had a nice chat. He said he had a busy day, having been taken to lunch. Sadly, he and wife Shirley have been separated because of her ill-health, but happily he is able to visit her every day.

Barry Trollope (80) – Barry is our latest member to find his name on the auspicious Honorary Member list. Barry said he is “very well” and enjoying life. He keeps active with golf (water and rough included!), and gardening. He obviously tries very hard to produce fine roses in the humidity of Queensland, and he often thinks he would like his roses to experience the cooler climate of Bowral. He and his partner Ronelle celebrated with a very nice restaurant lunch. Welcome to the old-timers’ division Barry.

Following on from last month’s par about Evelyn Goldstein, I’m happy to report she is hale and hearty. Upon seeing her name in lights last month, she phoned me to say that she had been having phone problems and had decided to have her landline disconnected (but the message bank was still accepting calls for some reason). Anyway, Evelyn is doing just fine. Also, members may be interested to know that I took the opportunity to make contact with our unsung and low-profile blogmaster, Peter Goerman, last month for his birthday. You will be pleased to hear that he is travelling quite well after his serious cancer surgery and treatment. You do the Club a great service Peter – thank you.

and here is one from the archives that will bring back a few memories. The old ANZ Bank building in Peak Hill NSW. The ANZ Bank came to Peak Hill in about 1951 after the Bank of Australia merger with the Union Bank of Australia. It traded in this building and was sold. It is now privately owned and is the home of Cosser's Diecast Collectables.

Correspondence received from members. Nick Oglesneff has written: Tony Knights’ article in the ANZROC September issue brought back memories for me. I also started my banking career in 1960, however at South Hurstville Branch. During the next 18 months my duties were Junior, Batching Clerk, Ledger Operator and Teller. Late 1961 I was transferred to 244 King Street Newtown Branch as a Teller. Mr Reg Tuxford was Branch Accountant. 244 was an eye opener for me. Bigger and much busier than South Hurstville. Large Business community and totally different customer base. However, it was a great working experience and a top branch. 26 years later I was back at 244 – this time as Manager. The Branch was even larger in business, staff and customer bases than previously. 768 George Street also featured highly in my life. In 1964 I met my future wife Carole (nee Grosvenor) also ANZ staffer, at Bank Staff Club Christmas Party held above the Branch. We celebrated our 54th Anniversary in August this year. Interesting stats regarding branch closures: During my 37 years with ANZ, I worked on permanent basis in 13 branches, 2 lending centres, seven as Manager.

  • Page | 12

Records show that only 3 branches currently remain open. Sadly both 244 King Street Newtown and 768 George Street are now gone. Regards, Nick Oglesneff Allan McCormac Our Life Member & Club Treasurer Mike Cunneen has sent this:

Our Treasurer, Past President and Life Member Mike Cunneen and his wife Fran visited Rhonda and Allan McCormac (who is a member of our Retired Officers Club) at their home at Newport a few days ago. Mike and his Brother Steve (who now lives at Tamworth) worked with Allan and Rhonda in the ES&A Bank some 50 years ago. Photo of Rhonda, Allan and Mike is attached. If you look at the photo you will see behind Rhonda one of the many paintings Allan has done in recent times. He is quite an accomplished artist. Allan and Rhonda are very involved in the organisation Driver Reviver Australia. Allan is the National Director of the organisation which operates at over 200 sites on major roads within Australia. Rhonda is very busy doing all the office work for this great organisation. Allan was awarded an OAM in 2017 for his work with this organisation. If you are interested in finding out more about Driver Reviver Australia please look at the organisations web page at: https://www.tollgroup.com/driverreviver#:~:text=Toll%20Driver%20Reviver%20is%20a%20community%20program%20that,safety%20and%20help%20to%20reduce%20the%20road%20toll. The Toll Group Australia is a major sponsor of Driver Reviver Australia. On Brendan Egan Mal Pfeiffer wrote. Brendan was in business (broker- Broadlink Pty Ltd) with myself (Coffs Harbour), John Peters (Brisbane) Scott Duffy (Sunshine Coast) and an outlet at Townsville. We were all ex ANZ / Esanda boys and started our brokerage group when we left ANZ. While not in the best of health for a while Brendan enjoyed himself everywhere he went. He always kept that happy outlook and keen for an ale and a punt. We had many a good times both in and out of the bank, and it was a sad day for all of us.” Mal also sent his regards to a former mentor (and ROC icon) Noel Bottrell.

    FAR NORTH COAST CHRISTMAS FUNCTION

Brian Rawle has advised the proposed Christmas lunch for the far north coast has had to be cancelled for the 19th November 2020 due to Covid-19. Brian said that they will try and have a get together in the first half of 2021 depending on Covid-19. Things are changing but we feel a decision had to be made, sorry about any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause. Hope to catch up again in 2021. Regards Brian.
