Ask a Vet – Lessons from the Field
Greg’s Story and Tip
Virtual Education…..why not?
The dawn of IDLA……..
• 2002 – can we do this?
• IDLA – let’s try!• New, exciting
challenge• Answers many
needs, including mine
My need
• It answered my question of how can I retire, travel and still be involved, still be a “teacher”?
It’s a small world!• I have had students in
such far-reaching lands as China, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. I have taught from Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Russia, Canada, Mexico , as well as other states like Hawaii, Florida, Texas, Illinois, North Dakota, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and California.
• The only obstacle has been with telephonic communication. But I have not seen this limit my success. We have developed so many new methods of synchronous and asynchronous communications, the telephone has become a secondary form! The IDLA format has been a real blessing for the students of Idaho with individual needs, as well as for educators looking for something that is new, exciting, and flexible. The only limit appears to be one’s imagination!
• I often have to give the same advice, explanations, and/or info to different students in the same class, or semester after semester.
My solution: a folder on my desktopwith often-used templates, like
• course start up checklist,• how-to-make-IdahoLive room for me, • lab report format with hints, • progress report template for announcements, • extension request format (no longer necessary?), • how-to-submit format, • course syllabus with common problems highlighted, • standard explanatory messages for how-to on other
troublesome assignments , • final exam expectations format,• how-to-do-Gizmo-Labs format, • graphics folder for announcements, • unit presentation PowerPoints 1 through 8, • teacher/principal photos, • extra graphics/websites for discussion boards and a • course calendar with all deadlines, events, reminders
posted.
• Every intervention that is likely to occur again in the future is filed here. It makes many of my efforts much quicker and easier. Of course, file naming is crucial to quick recovery of the proper message at a later date!
Tip #2 - extra emphasis
• The one item from the list that I would like to emphasize is the course calendar. I have it posted with the course syllabus and at the bottom of the announcements page for easy student use. It is also printable so that students can post it near their workspace for easy reference. Anything that is not pre-planned may also be added later by the student. I also consult this calendar for timely reminder announcements as well. The one thing my students should never be able to say is “I didn’t know………..”
