Lot: 100Rare and documented pair of George III silver Corinthian column candlesticks by Matthew Boulton & John Fothergill, Chester 1769/70, after an earlier identical design by London makers Thomas Gilpin & Simon Le Sage, having a Corinthian capital with square nozzle and a single rose on each side of the drip, fluted and reed column over a stepped square base further embellished with horizontal reeds and leaves and an engraved cipher of two initials, also engraved to the base the weight of each stick being 9oz 17dwt and 9oz 6dwt, height 30cm Provenance: Bought from John Lowe, Chester, circa 1980 by the vendor's father and thence by descent Note: Matthew Boulton and John Fothergill's connection with the Chester assay office can be dated as the years immediately preceding the establishment of the Birmingham assay office in 1773. Boulton had great dislike for the London goldsmiths and their hall and turned to Chester to have his silver assayed there before 1773 where he appointed one John Foliott as his agent. No examples survive of Boulton & Fothergill's work known to have been assayed in places other than Chester before the formation of the Birmingham office. It would appear that neither Boulton nor Fothergill had any definitive link with Chester in any other way although a George Fothergill appears among the Chester Freemen in Chester 1758 as an apprentice cabinet maker when Richard Richardson II was mayor. Boulton sent large quantities of silver to be assayed in Chester and in 1772 over 1200ozs were sent to the city for assaying strengthening his reputation and cause and on 28th May 1773 the bill establishing the Birmingham assay office received royal ascent. Despite

the considerable quantities assayed here, little Chester hallmarked Boulton silver has survived and only seven individual pieces have been recorded, six of which are candlesticks including the pair offered here, the seventh being a mazerine.
