El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro MEXICO Technical Evaluation Mission Report 2009 48

n Former Hacienda of San Diego de Navacoy and Puente del Diablo (Devil’s Bridge), Durango

The former hacienda of San Diego de Navacoy and Puente del Diablo (Devil’s Bridge), represent a typical El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro ensemble of sites. The bridge and aqueduct combina-tion, constructed in 1786, is of post and lintel construction (not the typical arch) and is the northernmost bridge constructed along ECRTA during the colonial period. The hacienda and chapel are in need of maintenance. Restoration work on the hacienda has begun. The village between the hacienda and the bridge is impoverished and unattractive. The village also appeared very authentic. Life alongside ECRTA during the historic period was dusty or muddy and accommodations and residences adjacent to this corridor retreated behind their walls to their quiet patios. This village provided a glimpse into the living ECRTA. While we can-not enforce unpleasant living situations for the sake of historical interpretation, we should also recognize that along ECRTA there are still opportunities to appreciate life alongside a busy road in a remote region.

Integrity and AuthenticityIntegrity and authenticity of the village and hacienda is moder-ate due to newer construction; integrity and authenticity of the bridge is high. Factors Affecting the PropertyNo obvious negative factors were observed. This ensemble has great potential with the needed investment to tell a compelling story of the cultural route.

The chapel of San Antonio of the former hacienda of Juana Guerra represents one of the typical property types found along El Cami-no Real de Tierra Adentro. The chapel has a large single flying buttress. It is a site that, individually, offers limited insights into the cultural route, but that collectively, provides another piece of
