1 WEC Inside Welcome to WEC Inside, your exclusive briefing from your WEC network WEC Inside September 2014 News WEC to hold Executive Assembly in Cartagena with the President of Colombia The WEC will be hosting its 2014 Executive Assembly in Cartagena, Colombia on 20–23 October, gathering the organisation’s leadership and the wider WEC community. The event will play host to the meetings of the WEC’s Officers Council and Standing Committees. At the Executive Assembly plenary, member committees will be making key decisions such as selecting the host country for the 2019 World Energy Congress, the race for which is between Brazil, Russia, and the UAE. Around 250 members from the WEC community have confirmed their attendance. The Assembly will also form the backdrop of several forums for energy leaders to discuss topical issues. Twenty-five ministers and government officials from 23 countries will also be gathering at the WEC’s Private Trilemma Ministerial Roundtable on 23 October to hold talks over the future of regional energy integration in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Summit, to be co-hosted by President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, will welcome energy ministers from Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, as well as from Algeria, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Russia, the UAE, and the USA. At the wider World Energy Leaders’ Summit and Private CEO Roundtable the ministers will be joined by over 100 chief executives and heads of organisations from the region and beyond for closed-door discussions over the region’s energy future. Regional integration, energy-water- food nexus, and decentralised energy will be among the top issues in their discussion agenda. Ecopetrol, Pemex, EDF, E.ON, Russian Grids, CAF, Alstom, Glencore, Enel, Flouor, Siemens, and Eletrobras will be among the organisations sending senior leadership representation to the Summit. WEC Chair, Mrs Marie-José Nadeau, will co-host the Cartagena Summit with the Colombian President. The Energy Trilemma Summit, taking place on the previous day (22 October), is expected to bring regional experts to the Cartagena event. This summit, organised by COCME, the WEC Colombian member committee, will provide a platform for the energy sector of Latin America and the Caribbean to discuss issues of system integration, innovation, and the potential of fossil fuels in the region. The committee, WEC-UK, is formed of the country’s most senior energy figures and is chaired by Steve Holliday, CEO of National Grid. The committee will work to inform the UK’s national energy debate, bringing together senior decision- makers from government, industry, finance, and civil society to shape the national energy agenda. WEC-UK will serve to: Provide a platform for institutionalised and multi- stakeholder energy dialogue incorporating all sectors across the energy spectrum Be the authoritative partner in the UK on energy using the WEC’s fact- based, impartial studies based on global, regional and national trends, innovation and best practices to drive the policy debate and provide business intelligence. Be the window to the world for the UK energy scene, showcasing UK best practices and innovation, promoting international business opportunities and policy objectives. WEC to hold Executive Assembly in Cartagena with the President of Colombia The WEC will be hosting its 2014 Executive Assembly in Cartagena, Colombia on 20–23 October, gathering the organisation’s leadership and the wider WEC community.

The event will play host to the meetings of the WEC’s Officers Council and Standing Committees. At the Executive Assembly plenary, member committees will be making key decisions such as selecting the host country for the 2019 World Energy Congress, the race for which is between Brazil, Russia, and the UAE.

Around 250 members from the WEC community have confirmed their attendance.
