from intelligent art.

Jonathan Burtstudied Palaeolithic archaeology at

Cambridge University between 1977 and 1980. After

two years as an archaeologist, agricultural contractor,

and barman, amongst other miscellaneous jobs between

1980 and 1982, he became a freelance writer and

teacher which he has been ever since. Between 1992

and 1995 he co-directed the Unofficial Knowledgeproject at the Kings College Research Centre,

Cambridge University. He began working on animal

history full time in 1994 and co-founded the Animal

Studies Group (U.K.) in 2000 with Steve Baker, Erica

Fudge, Robert Mckay, and Garry Marvin. He created

and edits the Animal series for Reaktion Books. This

series won the U.K. National Book Award for Best

Designed New Series in 2004. He is also a review

editor for the journal Society & Animals.

Animal: The importance of mythology, religion and
