My Side of the Confessional (part 2) By Fr. Mike Schmitz | November 26, 2012 | Life Teen News

We are continuing this article concerning what Fr. Mike Schmitz sees during confession. He said that he thinks there are three things. Last weekend he covered the first 2.

#1 I SEE GOD’S LOVE

#2 I SEE A SAINT IN THE MAKING

Now we continue: DO I REMEMBER YOUR SINS? NO!

So often, people will ask if I remember people’s sin from Confession. As a priest, I rarely, if ever, remember sins from the confessional. That might seem impossible, but the truth is, sins aren’t all that impressive. They aren’t like memorable sunsets or meteor showers or super-intriguing movies ... they are more like the garbage.

And if sins are like garbage, then the priest is like God’s garbage-man. If you ask a garbage-man about the gross-est thing he’s ever had to haul to the dump, maaaaaaybe he could remember it. But the fact is, once you get used to taking out the trash, it ceases to be noteworthy; it ceases to stand out.

#3 I SEE MY OWN WEAKNESS The third thing a priest sees when he hears confessions

is his own soul. It is a scary place for a priest. I cannot tell you how humbled I am when someone approaches Jesus’ mercy through me.

I am not over-awed by their sins; I am struck by the fact that they have been able to recognize sins in their life that I have been blind to in my own. Hearing someone's humility breaks down my own pride. It is one of the best examinations of conscience.

But why is confession a scary place for a priest? It is frightening because of the way in which Jesus trusts me to be a living sign of His mercy. Archbishop Fulton Sheen once told priests that we scarcely realize what is happening when we extend our hands over someone's head in absolution. We don’t realize, he said, that the very Blood of Christ is dripping from our fingers into their heads, washing the penitent clean.

The day after I was ordained as a priest, we had a little party and my dad stood up and made a toast. He has worked his entire life as an orthopedic surgeon, and he was a very good one. My whole life, his patients have come up to me at one time or another and told me how their lives have been changed because my dad was a such a good surgeon. So, there my dad was, standing in the midst of these people, and he began to say, “My whole life, I have used my hands to heal people’s broken bodies. But from now on, my son Michael...um, Father Michael...will use his hands (at this point, he got choked up)...He will use his hands to heal broken souls. His hands will save even more lives than mine have.”

Confession is such a powerful place. All I have to do is offer God’s mercy, love, and redemption...but I don’t want to get in Jesus’ way. The priest stands in judgment of no one. In the confessional, the only thing I have to offer is mercy.

Knights of Columbus NEWS

Some faithful of the Diocese have wondered about this year’s Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception – a Holy Day of Obligation which falls on Saturday. Here is some information to clarify the obligation for all who may wonder:

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is the patronal feast day of the United States and is almost always a Holy Day of Obligation.

This year, it falls on a Saturday, and is indeed a day of obligation. (This is confusing, because certain other holy days, when they fall on Saturday, do not oblige!)

This means we have two successive Mass obligations to fulfill: Immaculate Conception and the Second Sunday of Advent. Two obligations = two Masses.

We may fulfill our obligations by attending any Mass within the time windows for which the obligations may be fulfilled.

The obligation for the Immaculate Conception may be fulfilled from Friday evening, 12/7, up until 11:59 PM on Saturday, 12/8,.

The obligation for Sunday may be fulfilled from Saturday evening, 12/8, up until 11:59 PM on Sunday, 12/9. So, some scenarios:

You go to Mass Saturday evening (which may actually be the texts for the Sunday Mass) and then go again on Sunday – both obligations fulfilled, because you went to two Masses within the right time windows. The text of the Mass does not matter.

You go Friday evening and then Saturday evening.

You go Friday evening and then sometime on Sunday.

You go Saturday morning and then Sunday sometime.

You go Saturday morning and then Saturday evening.

You go a wedding Mass on Saturday evening and then a regular Sunday Mass. Etc.

The bottom line is: there are two obligations; therefore attendance at two Masses within the right timeframes is required, regardless of the texts used for Mass. This is what current canon law requires.

Other than the regularly scheduled weekend Masses we will have available:

Friday 7:00 PM

Friday midnight

Saturday morning 9:00 AM to help you fulfill these obligations.

Help Annunciation of the Lord Church Save on Taxes

If you are 70 1/2 years old or older, you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to Annunciation of the Lord Church without paying income taxes on the donation. You don’t have to donate the entire IRA to be eligible for the tax benefit. You’ll pay no income taxes on your gift and if you spouse is 70 ½ years or older, they can donate up to $100,000 as well. The transfer does not create taxable income or a tax deduction, so you will benefit even if you don’t itemize your deductions.

If you haven’t taken your required minimum distribution this year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Should you have any questions about donating an IRA, please contact your plan administrator or tax professional. Also remember all donations must be received by 12/31/2018 to qualify on 2018 tax return.

As Advent begins, Jesus warns his disciples about the end-time, admonishing them against a lifestyle of indulgence and worry. These things will not matter when the Lord asks for an account of our stewardship.

SCRIP is a program where our school sells gift cards from many different companies. You purchase them at face value but the company gives the school a percentage back. It is a Win-Win situation. For just a few minutes of your time after weekend Masses in the Gathering Space or during the week at the Parish Office you can purchase these gift cards and the school makes money to help with their programs. Please consider using SCRIP whenever you can.

We have Angel Tree possibilities for using Scrip. Each family we are sponsoring has a few angels requesting Scrip for the Family. We especially recommend those merchants that have grocery items such as Publix, Walmart and Target. Some people are hesitant to purchase shoes -- scrip works well for that also. We can also order Payless or Shoe

Carnival Scrip for you.

Thank You!

Our Annunciation Conference of SVDP was the recipient of two generous canned food drives. St. Ann School collected over 1,000 cans for the SVDP food pantry! Wow! Also, Old Navy collected cans at its store for the SVDP food pantry.

Thank you to both of these groups who so generously provided food for many of those in need in our area. May God bless you!
