BPCC Creative Studio – Art Classes

Calling All Artists! The weekly open studio style painting classes with Russel Whitten are ongoing – now in our 5th year - at the Community Center, or at plein air locations when the weather is hospitable. Artists at all levels are welcome.

The Community Center space and Russel’s schedule are such that we offer a 3-hour class on Thursdays (1:00pm to 4:00pm). We run the classes in successive 5-week sessions. Tuition is $125 for each full session. Although continuous attendance is preferred, for those who may not be able to commit to the full five-week schedule, “drop-ins” are accepted at $30 per class.

The open studio format allows artists to work in any medium and to pursue their own projects with Russel’s assistance, or to paint weekly set-ups designed to explore a particular concept. Each class in the session is self-standing. The 5-week blocks are strictly to enable us to plan the financial side of our operation.

Please contact Brad Coupe if you are interested and let us know when you would like to begin.

We hope you will find the prospect of a weekly art class right here in the Pool to be of interest and we look forward to seeing you there.

Send your response to: Brad Coupe - [email protected] or call 207-229-9402

LIBRARY: By now most are aware that our Library is closed for a period of time as construction is un-

derway on the first level. A new handicap accessible bathroom is replacing the two small ones. This is a much needed change to our space for all who utilize the Community Center. We will let you know when the Library is again available. Beginning this month there will be the addition of a book(s) review offered here by Tom Bancroft. Some of you may be acquainted with Tom. I asked him awhile ago if he would consider writing book reviews for the newsletter and he has agreed. In this first one which follows, he introduces himself and background along with the review featuring author Tara French. I hope you will enjoy this added feature to the Newsletter. Sue Maccalous

A note on your reviewer:

A book reviewer, like a contractor, doesn’t require licensure, so that if you are confident enough in your abilities, then you call yourself contractor or book reviewer. In this reviewer’s case, I am an autodidact. I have read 60-80 books a year for 50 years, and have absorbed thousands of reviews. I have read theories of reviewing from Matthew Arnold to Edmund Wilson, to Harold Bloom and James Wood. What we pre-sumably end with is informed taste, and of course, like cuisine, it may not be everyone’s.

Unlike contracting, there are no rules that, if broken, will place us out of plumb. However, this reviewer has imposed some on himself.

1. ALWAYS read the book under discussion. This is not as obvious as you may think. One could read re-views only, or the dust jacket for that matter. I try not to be unduly influenced by these.

2. Be objective in a subjective way. I suppose this could more succinctly be called evenhanded or fair.

3. Be subjective in an objective manner. This means that what you read from this reviewer is what this reviewer likes. You will not read a review of anything that I did not finish, or hated. I read for pleasure, and write for the same reason.

I have undertaken to review some books that are available at the Biddeford Pool Library, at the behest of Sue Maccalous, your erstwhile Librarian.

Let’s begin with one of the top three or four mystery writers alive: Tana French.

Most mysteries are read for plot. Only the best are read for character and character development. This epitomizes Ms. French’s seven novels, six featuring the Dublin Murder Squad. Ms. French knows her terri-tory well. An American who has lived in Ireland for 26 years, she sets her stories in contemporary Ireland, reeling in the aftermath of economic collapse. In The Woods, her first novel from 2007 is set in an archaeo-logical dig soon to be paved over. Three children go into the woods, and only one comes out. If that sounds eerie, Broken Harbor, (one of the best in the series) is set in a suburban development unfinished by the de-veloper. A family of four is murdered, with only the wife surviving. This reviewer’s favorite, The Secret Place, is set in a private girl’s school, which exposes in precise, pinpoint prose just how cruel (and murder-ous) young girls can be.

However, it is not the settings, or even the plots (which are as intricate as any you’ve ever read) which will have you craving more- it is the Murder Squad itself. In most mysteries, the central question is: Who is the murderer? In Tana French’s world, it is who are the detectives? (They work in pairs). While in most crime series, you become familiar with, and know what to expect from Hercule Poirot, Harry Bosch, or Kinsey Milhone, each book in Ms. French’s oeuvre is narrated by a different detective, who has often appeared in a supporting role in previous books. My personal favorite is Antoinette Conway, in The Trespasser. The only woman on the Squad, and mixed-race as well, she must be the most conflicted detective in fiction, with a chip on her shoulder the size of a plank. She teams with Stephen Moran, himself the narrator of The Secret Place.

The cliché about mystery writers, when really done well, is that they “transcend the genre”and become literature. Tana French will, in the fullness of time, join Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald, Elmore Leonard, and very few others, in that pantheon.

Candidates interested in applying MUST have applications completed and sub-mitted no later than JUNE 1st, or forfeit eligibility for the year.

“Watercolor Painting - Making Water Behave”

The York County Senior College is offering this watercolor painting class at the BPCC, beginning Tuesday, April 2.

This class, consisting of 8 weekly sessions from April 2 through May 21st, is open to YCSC members. The class is for novice and intermediate watercolor painters. Each session will be held on Tuesdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Biddeford Pool Community Center. We will explore a variety of basic techniques and issues, such as washes, painting light and shadow and perspective. We will have demonstrations for those interested in particular issues and we will also have a still-life setup for people to paint if they choose. Students looking for an opportunity to pursue their own interests with input from the instructor are also welcome.

Equipment needed - If you have basic watercolor paints and brushes etc., you won’t need to get more. For those who have no equipment, we have paper and a limited supply of brushes and beginner paints. In addi-tion, all students will need a container for water (a tall plastic cup or water glass will do), an HB pencil and eraser (Ideally a “kneaded” eraser available at most art supply stores), and a simple watercolor palette (a

plain white dinner plate will do with several small plastic cups like the ones that salad dressing comes in to hold individual colors). You will also want a flat surface on which to tape your paper. If you have questions

about the materials or the class itself, please call Brad Coupe at 207-229-9402.

Instructor: Brad Coupe • Location: Biddeford Pool Community Center Day/Time: Tuesdays, 1:00 to 4:00 • Starts: April 2 • Class Size: Min 5, Max 10

Cost: $25 Senior College membership fee • Enrollment runs until March 7.

To enroll you must be a member of the YCSC, but becoming a member and registering for the class is easy. You must be at least 50 years of age to be eligible. Just fill out the membership application and a separate class registration form available on the Senior College website at yorkcountyseniorcollege.org and submit them with a $25 check payable to the York County Senior College to:

York County Senior College, 4 Scammon Street, Suite 18, Saco, ME 04072

Newly formed Organization Pursuing Maine Specialty

License Plate To Raise Funds For Lighthouse Preservation

FOWIL Volunteer, Sean Murphy, has formed the Maine Lighthouse Trust, a charitable organization, to benefit all Maine lighthouses with the proceeds generated by the sale of a new specialty Lighthouse License Plate.

Maine motorists throughout the State are urged to pre-order the new plate to meet the 2000 threshold required for state authorization of specialty plates. Once authorized, $10 of the normal $25 fee motorists pay for specialty plates will go into the Trust to be distributed to Maine lighthouses and lighthouse organizations for preservation and restoration of Maine’s iconic lighthouses, and for public education.

When the threshold is met, the Trust will submit the pre-paid application funds to the Maine Secretary of State to submit proposed legislation to the Maine Legislature seeking authorization of the specialty plate. The legislature will also have final approval of the design of the license plate itself. The Secretary of State has already given its approval of a design proposed by the Trust. That design features our own Wood Island Lighthouse Tower!

The goal is eventually to sell many thousands of plates and generate a significant annual revenue stream to the Trust for distribution, which will be via a grant application process. Once the plate is approved and in production, possibly taking a year, each of the 2,000 pre-sale registrants will receive a BMV voucher that can be taken to a local municipal office or BMV branch and redeemed for a set of lighthouse plates. The Maine Lighthouse Trust will then receive $10 from every plate purchase and renewal.

A special feature of the Trust’s campaign will allow motorists making one of these 2000 pre-order purchases to designate a particular lighthouse to be the direct recipient of the $10 the Trust receives for the initial purchase and every renewal of those particular plates. So, here is how you can help Wood Island Lighthouse:

Pre-order a $25 plate for each of your Maine-registered vehicle(s) AND,

Be sure to name Wood Island Lighthouse as the beneficiary of the funds from your plate pre-order purchase!

For information on how to pre-order and more information about this initiative, visit: https://www.mainelighthousetrust.org/
