The start of a new academic year
is an inspiring time, filled with
anticipation and excitement.
This fall is especially exhilarat-
ing for Virginia Wesleyan as we welcome
one of our largest freshman classes to the
most attractive and inviting campus in
Virginia.
Many of our students will move into
newly renovated residence halls in Bray
Village, while our science students will study
in laboratories that have been refurbished
and outfitted with state-of-the-art
equipment. Some students will study at
Biosphere 2 Center in Oracle, Arizona,
under a recently completed agreement with
Columbia University. Other students will
pursue their goals of studying medicine by
enrolling in Eastern Virginia Medical School
through our new guaranteed admission
program.
Students will enjoy nighttime soccer
and lacrosse at Trinder Center, thanks to
newly installed lighting. Faculty will benefit
from the latest technology in Blocker Hall,
equipped with an astonishing audio-visual
projection system that will bring teaching
to a new level and be the envy of other
academic institutions in our region.
These developments are the result of
the combination of hard work by members
of the campus community and sustained
generosity of many men and women who
care passionately about the teaching and
learning that occur here. We have few
reasons to be surprised: for more than
40 years this energy and support have been
characteristic of those who love this college.
We do, however, have many reasons to be

thankful. We are particularly grateful to
Trustee Emeritus Kenneth R. Perry for his
$1-million gift in December and to Trustee
Jane Batten and her husband Frank for their
$11-million gift in March.
We are also indebted to Laura
Whittaker ’03, who made a gift within weeks
of graduating and successfully challenged
many of her classmates to join her, helping
to raise alumni participation. Her classmate,
Zachary Jahnigen ’03 of Bethany Beach,
Delaware, came into my office in May and
unrolled a wad of dollar bills that had been
stuffed in his pocket. Noting my surprise,
Big Zach explained that his artwork had
been on display in the Hofheimer Library.
He had sold several pieces and made a nice
profit that he wanted to donate to the Art
Department in honor of his wonderful
education. I was so impressed by that young
man and what he was doing that without
hesitating, I told him I would match his gift.
I hope each of you listed in this report
will take great pride in your contribution.

students to make the world a better place,
while maintaining the college’s financial
health in very challenging economic times.

Involvement often generates the desire
to give. This simple statement is one of
the principles of sound fund raising.
At Virginia Wesleyan, involvement
takes many forms, and it clearly has helped
generate the philanthropy that has brought
the college to life and propelled it to success.
Our earliest involvement flows directly from
the United Methodist Church. Clergy and
lay leaders founded Virginia Wesleyan in
1961 and remain involved to this day.
This past year, Wesleyan hosted more
than 200 leaders from the three local dis-
tricts for a United Methodist leadership
training workshop. Three months later, 10
times that many youth from across Virginia
descended on campus for a two-day event,
Awakening 2003. These examples, just a
small sample of the church’s involvement,
demonstrate the strong philanthropic rela-
tionship between Virginia Wesleyan and
United Methodists.
Members of the local Hampton Roads
community have been essential to the devel-
opment of Wesleyan, and they remain
involved and interested in our students and
faculty. Throughout the year, we host a
number of community groups on campus
and welcome individuals at cultural and
athletic events. The Community Service and
Career Planning offices extend the campus
directly into the community, enhancing the
educational experience of our students while
strengthening collaboration between the
college and the community. Individuals,
corporations and foundations build a solid

relationship with Virginia Wesleyan and, in
turn, support our work financially.
Alumni begin their involvement with
the college as students, and an increasing
number remain connected long after they
graduate. Some serve directly as members of
the Alumni Association, Board of Trustees,
President’s Advisory Council and Women of
Wesleyan. Increasingly, other alums join the
Parents Council, helping their own children
adjust to college life as new Marlins. Many
more alumni return for special events or for
an occasional visit to retrace fond memories
and admire the growing, dynamic campus
landscape.
Reflecting their increased involvement
during the past year, alumni increased their
giving to the college by 10 percent and their
participation rate by more than 9 percent.
The names of the individuals and
organizations listed in this annual report
demonstrate a wealth of involvement. I am
pleased to extend my sincere appreciation to
all who care for this institution, give of their
time and support us with their gifts. I invite
all of you interested in Virginia Wesleyan’s

Dell Young’s passion for her alma mater is obvious when
someone mentions the name Virginia Wesleyan College.
“People need to come back and see what it is like to recon-
nect and rediscover the reason they came here to begin with,” says
Young ‘74, the straightforward, former president of the Alumni
Association Board of Directors.
She is excited about the physical growth of the campus as
well as the growing number of alumni returning for college-spon-
sored events.
This leader among alums admits that she arrived on campus in
fall 1970 a very straight-laced, shy and reserved girl. Her Wesleyan
experience helped her to grow into the confident, outgoing person
she is today.
Young holds the faculty in high regard and recalls its
strengths both in and out of the classroom. She remembers faculty
members who bent over backwards to assist her and other students
during her college days.
Young, an advanced placement biology teacher at First
Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, attributes her experiences at
Wesleyan as the primary reason for wanting to stay connected and
involved in the life of the college. She even enrolled in a summer
course that caught her interest.
Young is supportive of the college through the sharing of her
time and gifts. She feels strongly that alumni have an obligation to
support the college to secure its future.
“When I write that check it makes me smile,” she says.
“I relive my Wesleyan memories.”

June-Marie Lam was a wife, mother, grandmother, world
traveler and volunteer in 1984, and finally, at the age of 58,
a college graduate with a degree in humanities. Her educational
journey took more than 20 years to complete.
She began taking a few courses in 1964 at the University of
Honolulu, where her husband Gene was stationed, and she continued
her part-time studies when he retired from the military and began
an anesthesiology practice in Virginia Beach. She enrolled in
Tidewater Community College, where she took every art and
humanities course offered. She also learned how to catalog art
slides, eventually building the collection and devising a new
cataloging system.
“When it was time to move on, I visited Virginia Wesleyan,” Lam
recalls. I met with an admissions counselor, and by the end of the
interview, to my great surprise, he offered me a full scholarship! When
I started to protest that other students needed the assistance more
than I did, he replied, ‘You have done well. You have earned this.’”
Lam credits her professors, Dr. Pat Sullivan and Dr. Gordon
Magnuson, for their guidance, and Dr. David Clayton for encouraging
her to pursue her master’s degree
at Old Dominion University in 1987.
Since achieving her educa-
tional goals, Lam has had more time
to enjoy her many interests. She has
visited Japan, Europe, North Africa,
Afghanistan and Mongolia. This year
she spent a month traveling in
Germany, Brussels, Romania and
Hungary.
Lam is a patron of the arts
and a lifelong learner. She supports
the Virginia Stage Company, the Virginia Beach Symphony and the
Virginia Beach Musical Theater. She is a member of the American
Association of University Women and the World Affairs Council and
serves on the board and the curriculum committee of the Institute
for Learning in Retirement.
At her alma mater, Lam is a member of Women of Wesleyan,
the Heritage Society and the Virginia Wesleyan Society, and she
supports the Familiar Faces concert series.
Not surprisingly, she is an advocate of merit-based scholar-
ship awards. She wants to make sure other hard-working students
hear the words, “You have done well. You have earned this.”

A $50,000 scholarship for United Methodist students honor-
ing the Rev. Eugene R. Woolridge, Jr., and his wife Jane has
been endowed at Virginia Wesleyan under the leadership of Ralph
and Inez Roop from Trinity United Methodist Church in Richmond
and Tom and Betty Broyles from Virginia Beach United Methodist
Church.
The scholarship honors the service that the Woolridges
provided to these two churches over 19 years. In addition to the
many gifts received from members of the last two churches served
by the Woolridges, several gifts were received from the first church
to which Rev. Woolridge was appointed, Stratford Hills UMC in
Richmond. The first scholarship was awarded last year to Amy
Beverly ‘05 from Virginia Beach UMC.
Woolridge came to Virginia Beach United Methodist Church in
1978 and served as its pastor until he was assigned to Trinity in 1989.
The Woolridges remained at Trinity United Methodist Church until he
retired in 1997, when they returned to Virginia Beach to live. His
tenure at both churches was marked by dramatic growth in member-
ship and outreach to the community. Both churches witnessed
increased member involvement in all areas of church ministry under
his guidance and with Jane’s thoughtful input and assistance.
“This scholarship provides well deserved recognition for the life-
time service Gene and Jane Woolridge have given to The United
Methodist Church,” said VWC President Billy Greer at a spring 2002
ceremony announcing the Woolridge Scholarship. “We are honored that
leaders within Trinity and Virginia Beach United Methodist Churches
selected Virginia Wesleyan to endow this thoughtful tribute.”
The Woolridges were present at the announcement of the
scholarship and expressed their pleasure that the scholarship had
been established. “Jane and I are humbled by this wonderful expres-
sion of appreciation extended by the members of Trinity and Virginia
Beach churches,” Woolridge said.
“We enjoyed our service to these two
splendid churches, as well as all the
churches across the conference we served,
and we continue to enjoy the many close
friendships we established through the
years. We are excited about the potential
this scholarship holds for assisting many
generations of students at Virginia
Wesleyan College.”

P rofessor Doug Kennedy, Ph.D., made arrangements to
include Virginia Wesleyan as a beneficiary in his will just one
year after arriving in 1988 to teach in the Recreation and Leisure
Studies Program.
The then-28-year-old had the full support of his wife Betsy,
a professor in the Recreation and Tourism Studies Department at
Old Dominion University, to make this planned gift.
Financial planning has always been important to Kennedy.
His father died at an early age, and he saw what his mother had to
go through in dealing with the estate. She eventually set up a trust
to make things easier for the family.
Kennedy’s decision to provide for the college was personal.
“The college took a chance on me,” recalls Kennedy. “I was
finishing a doctoral program at Temple University in Philadelphia
when Virginia Wesleyan offered me my first professional teaching
position.”
The Kennedys appreciate the family atmosphere. When it came
time to plan their move to the area, they were offered a room in the
dormitory while they were house hunting. Their two boys, Sam, 7,
and Max, 4, are growing up interacting with students, some of whom
babysit for them from time to time.
Kennedy has taken his support of the college a step further.
Since January, he has volunteered his time to call Recreation and
Leisure Studies alums and encourage them to give to their alma
mater. “I want to hook them early in the hopes of making them
consistent donors.”
He has a good base with which to work. Recreation and
Leisure studies alumni already give at a rate 21-percent greater
than the overall percentage of donors to the college.

John and Carol Lingo marvel at the changes to the Virginia
Wesleyan campus during the six years their sons, Jack and
Bill, were students here.
“When Jack came in 1997, they were building the Godwin
Administration Building and Clarke Hall,” John says. “Then the
Batten Student Center came along in 2002. This was obviously a
growing college.”
Virginia Wesleyan fulfilled every expectation the Lingos had,
both academically and athletically. Jack ‘01, a recreation and leisure
studies major, and Bill ‘03, an art major, appreciated the one-on-one
relationships with their professors, the range of class offerings and
the opportunity to play sports. Jack was president of Rho Phi
Lambda, the Recreation and Leisure Studies honor society, and Bill
received the 2003 Outstanding Achievement in Art Award.
Both boys were All-Conference lacrosse players. Jack cap-
tained the team for three years, and Bill served as a student assis-
tant coach and received the Student Athlete Award.
John and Carol traveled from their Delaware home to watch
the boys play, never missing a single game. “For us as parents and
sports enthusiasts, there was no greater thrill than to sit in the sta-
dium and hear the names of both our sons announced in the start-
ing lineup,” John says.
As members of Parents Council and the Marlin Athletic Club,
the Lingos have generously supported the college with their
resources and their time. When lacrosse coach J. P. Stewart called
and asked for their help with a project to install lights on the soc-
cer/lacrosse field, the Lingos readily joined former trustee Kenneth
R. Perry to provide funding. They hope the lighted fields will help
recruiting efforts and provide more exposure for Wesleyan athletics.
“We were looking for a way to give something to the college
in appreciation for what it has done for Jack and Bill,” John says.
Undoubtedly, the Lingos have added their mark to the changing face
of the Wesleyan campus.

Women of Wesleyan is a unique sup-port group among colleges. Its namemay make you think the membersare alumnae of an all women’s
school, but that’s not the case. Of approximately 200active members, fewer than 20 percent are graduates ofVirginia Wesleyan.
The organization began in 1967 during the col-lege’s second academic year. Trustee Helen Hoffmanand Helen Kellam, wife of Trustee Edward Kellam,held several informal teas at their homes. Invitationswere sent to prominent women in the Hampton Roadsarea. Attendees were asked to contribute $100 each tothe new Methodist-related liberal arts college, a heftysum for tea, coffee and a few pastries. Later that year,Sara Miller Boyd, wife of Trustee Robert F. Boyd, waselected first president of what was initially calledWomen For Wesleyan.
Since those early days, members of the Women ofWesleyan have served the college as ambassadors to theHampton Roads community. Raising funds became thegroup’s main focus, with an emphasis on scholarshipresources. After a few more teas and card parties, amajor function was launched, the annual WOW FleaMarket. For the next 30 years, this event was the group’s largest source of income. In 1981, a fall fashionshow was added, and in 1995 a scholarship auction andbrunch further increased the group’s success and generosity. Four years ago a spring wine and cheeseparty replaced the flea market.
These projects have raised more than $300,000.In just the last two years, gifts to the college havetotaled $42,000. The funds have gone for scholarships,library books, science equipment, lounge furniture,landscaping and even a campus greenhouse.
“Creativity and enthusiasm have kept the Womenof Wesleyan successful all these years,” says PresidentGay Shulman. “Of course, we’re promoting a mightyfine product.”

The 2002-2003 academic year
saw a 50-percent increase in
our endowment funds, to
$32 million, enabling Virginia
Wesleyan to move forward in exciting new
areas. These gifts and those to the annual
fund demonstrate a continuing commitment
to the college and support of its mission to
the community.
Virginia Wesleyan made almost $1 mil-
lion in scholarship awards this past year from
funded sources out of a total financial aid
budget of $6 million. With a financial aid
commitment of this size, the importance of
annual funds becomes apparent. While most
annual fund giving is unrestricted, allowing
the college to determine its best use in
accomplishing its mission, some funds are
restricted to specific programs, such as
annual scholarship awards.
The Virginia Foundation for
Independent Colleges (VFIC) comprises
15 well-known private colleges in the
Commonwealth, including Virginia
Wesleyan. All 15 colleges discount their
tuition and fees an average of 30 to 50
percent per student.

These discounts are usually made by
awarding the student grants and scholar-
ships. Grants are a direct write-off of a
portion of the tuition, while scholarships
may be either a direct write-off or come
from sources funded by annual fund gifts
or earnings on the college’s endowment.
Colleges with large endowments have
greater flexibility in awarding these funded
scholarships.
Our current endowment of $32
million helps enable Virginia Wesleyan to
discount its tuition and fees by an average
of 33 percent per student. While Virginia
Wesleyan already charges lower tuition and
fees than many VFIC colleges, we will be
able to increase our assistance as our
endowment grows.
This will further support students and
their families as they strive to finance their
education, resulting in highly qualified
graduates who will produce a positive impact
on an ever-changing world.
