Many of us learned Newton’s third law of motion in high school: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. We like to think of this as a metaphor for philanthropy. Donations to The Hospital for Sick Children spark a direct and profound difference in the lives of children who need our help.

Our advertising campaign expressed it this way this year: Discoveries lead to recoveries. Indeed, donations lead to many phenomenal outcomes. As you will read in this annual report:

• Donations lead to faster help in times of crisis: Wait times in our Emergency Department have decreased for certain patients since renovations have taken place.

• Donations increase access to state-of-the-art treatments: Renovations to our image-guided therapy suites mean more children will get treatment that can reduce complications, shorten hospital stays and decrease radiation exposure.

• Donations support lifesaving discoveries: The ‘Toronto protocol’, developed by SickKids researchers, has so far led to 100 per cent survival in children at high risk of cancer. It is now being adopted around the world.

• Donations lead to impact here and abroad: Cardiac fellow, Dr. Yasuhiro Kotani, is at SickKids learning from the world’s best doctors at the Labatt Family Heart Centre. He is among 1,200 fellows and residents from around the world at the hospital this year, acquiring knowledge to help them make a difference in the future.

And importantly, donations open doors. The new SickKids Centre for Research and Learning will open in August 2013. Peter Gilgan’s magnificent lead gift of $40 million will help ensure this new centre becomes the hub for life-changing research and new discoveries.

We are profoundly grateful to all of our supporters. Because of your outstanding generosity, we are marking yet another record-breaking year for the Foundation, with fundraising , net lottery and parking revenues of $111.7 million. This support has a profound impact as we strive to achieve our vision: Healthier Children. A Better World. Thank you for everything you do to support this vision.

With gratitude,

John Francis, Chair Ted Garrard, President & CEO

Philanthropy leads to … Founded in 1875, SickKids is driven, every day, by a mission to provide the best in complex and

specialized care to children, to make groundbreaking discoveries and to train the next generation

of child health experts who will make a difference here and around the world. This integration of

care, research and learning is life changing.

life-changing care, research and learning Every year, more than 100,000 children rely on the lifesaving care provided at SickKids and that

number continues to grow. SickKids Foundation has been inspiring our communities since 1972

to invest in health and scientific advances to improve the lives of these children and their families,

both now and for generations to come.

Thanks to our generous community of supporters, we are pushing the frontiers of care, research

and learning to help children here and around the world. The success of SickKids Foundation

comes from our many fundraising programs that encourage our communities to get involved.

Inside SickKids Foundation Inside The Hospital for Sick Children

Corporate Partnerships▐ This fundraising program partners SickKids with Canada’s business community. Relationships take many forms including philanthropic gifts, sponsorships, cause-related marketing programs, corporate events and employee and leadership giving campaigns. SickKids is also a member of Children’s Miracle Network, which works in partnership with 170 children’s hospitals across North America to raise funds with national partners in support of priority projects at the hospitals.

Direct Marketing▐ Direct Marketing programs raise funds

for the hospital’s highest priority needs. This includes facilitating general and Miracle Club monthly donations through various channels including SickKids TV, SickKids Lottery and face-to-face fundraising. The program also facilitates other ways to contribute such as through In Honour and In Memory Tribute Gifts and through Get Better Gifts symbolic giving.

Events▐ The support of our community is one of the keys to our success. Fundraising events enable us to engage prospective new donors and provide sponsorship and branding opportunities through the more than 1,000 third-party

events organized annually by patient families and the community. The Foundation will also be managing our own events, through a Signature Events Program launching in 2012.

Major Gifts▐ The Major Gifts program works with philanthropic foundations and generous individuals who provide significant support to SickKids. An important part of this program is Gift and Estate Planning, which works with individuals who would like to support SickKids through an estate gift, including bequests, gifts of life insurance, annuities and other property.

Care▐ Extraordinary people – doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals – provide a full spectrum of child health services at SickKids for infants to youth up to the age of 18. Motivated by a philosophy of family-centred care and committed to quality and service excellence, they ensure that patients receive the best care possible and that families are included every step of the way.

The level of care delivered at SickKids is a true reflection of community-driven philanthropy. It allows for the investment in the tools needed to make the hospital truly outstanding.

Research▐ Since its beginnings in 1954, the SickKids Research Institute has become the largest child health research institute in Canada – a centre for innovation that places SickKids on the world stage of health-care expertise. Determined in their pursuit of discoveries, our scientists are constantly finding new ways to prevent disease, cure illnesses and improve the lives of children.

Donations support research personnel, equipment and scientific studies that allow SickKids to move research out of the lab and into practice as quickly as possible.

Learning▐ Medical science produces new knowledge at an exponential rate. The SickKids Learning Institute brings this new knowledge to health-care practitioners so they may, in turn, provide the best care for sick children. With Canada’s largest training program for child health clinicians and researchers, learning is always at the heart of everything we do.

Community support helps educate the next generation of health-care leaders and enables them to be among the best in the world.

If you would like more information on any of these programs, please call 1-800-661-1083 or email us at [email protected]

Juliet, 5, Lucas, 15, and their mother, Luana. Juliet and Lucas remain cancer free, despite having a genetic mutation that puts them at more than a 75 per cent risk of getting cancer in their lifetime and about a 35 per cent risk of getting it before their 20th birthdays. They are tested at SickKids every three months.

Research leads to lifesaving discoveriesUnrestricted gifts, such as those from monthly donors, support the SickKids Research Institute and allow researchers, like Dr. David Malkin, to make lifesaving breakthroughs.

Dr. David Malkin and his team developed the ‘Toronto protocol’, which has so far led to 100 per cent survival in children at high risk of cancer. It is now being adopted around the world.

Most nights, Lucas and Juliet say “I love you” to each other before heading off to bed. As brother and sister, the 15- and five-year-old have a close bond. But they are also linked by the fact that, along

with their mother, Luana, they carry a genetic mutation that puts them at high risk for developing cancer.

Luana was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 25, her mother and aunt both died of the disease, her younger sister passed away from brain cancer when she was only nine years old and her young nephew passed away in 2008.

But worry has turned to hope for the family, thanks to a landmark discovery by SickKids researcher Dr. David Malkin. In research that was supported by donors, Dr. Malkin and his team have developed an approach for monitoring children like Lucas and Juliet with scans and blood tests so any tumours that develop can be detected early. Treatment is much more likely to be successful when the cancer is at an early stage. Dr. Malkin’s ‘Toronto protocol’ has so far led to a 100 per cent survival rate among patients with this genetic risk for cancer, and is now being used by doctors around the world.

“It’s reassuring to be monitored so closely,” says Luana. “It allows us to be normal and not worry so much.”

The impact of the ‘Toronto protocol’ is both personal and financial. “Our goal is to save lives,” says Dr. Malkin, “but our protocol also saves health-care dollars. The cost to the health-care system of monitoring a patient is far less than the cost of having to treat an aggressive form of cancer.”

The Lockes are profoundly grateful.

Jolani, 13. Sickle cell crises bring Jolani to the Emergency Department at SickKids far more often than he’d like. His experience with the caring team is inspiring him to be a nurse or doctor. “I want to help people, especially with their pain.” With math, science and English as his favourite school subjects, he’s on his way to developing the right knowledge.

For Jolani, one of the best things about the recent renovations to the Emergency Department (ED) is the television in each of the rooms. “The TVs help take my mind off the pain,” says the 13-year-old.

Jolani has sickle cell disease, a serious blood disorder that often causes excruciating pain. It’s common for him to have to come to the ED and be admitted to the hospital twice a month. He always hopes for the fastest service possible. But TVs aside, the new spaces created through the ED renovations have made a difference.

“Patients now flow more efficiently through the department,” says Dr. Stephen Porter, Division Head of Paediatric Emergency Medicine at SickKids, “which means children can be treated faster and be on their way back home sooner than ever before.” Wait times for children with less serious illnesses, for example, have gone down by 18 per cent despite a 12 per cent increase in volumes over the last year.

These renovations were made possible by a lead gift from Bell, as well as generous donations from other companies and individuals such as Marita Simbul-Lezon. This kind of generosity eases the pain for thousands of children, like Jolani, every year.

Building on the success of the Emergency Department renovations, work is now underway to bring the hospital’s Urgent Care Unit up to the same standards.

A child is registered in the Emergency Department at SickKids every nine minutes.

Renovations lead to faster help in times of crisis

The busiest single area of the Emergency Department is the triage area, where patients are initially assessed.

Dr. Yasuhiro Kotani. Dr. Kotani came to SickKids from Japan for specialized training in cardiology. Supported by donor dollars, he is one of more than 300 cardiac fellows from around the world who have benefited from SickKids expertise.

Evelyn was born with one of the most complex forms of congenital heart disease that, until 25 years ago, was usually fatal. Now, thanks to a heart transplant at SickKids, the 18-month-old is thriving.

Her family is grateful to Dr. Glen Van Arsdell and one of the world’s best teams of multidisciplinary cardiac specialists at the Labatt Family Heart Centre. Dr. Yasuhiro Kotani is one of the fellows on the team, a young cardiac surgeon from Okayama, Japan, who has come to SickKids to learn from our experts. Since January 2011, he has been working alongside Dr. Van Arsdell, performing cardiac surgeries like the heart transplant that saved Evelyn’s life.

“SickKids is much more advanced than hospitals in Japan in terms of staff integration and research. Working here has allowed me to become a more knowledgeable, skilled surgeon,” says Dr. Kotani.

By enabling fellows to work in integrated clinical teams, learn cutting-edge surgical techniques and participate in research studies, the Labatt Family Heart Centre provides an unparalleled training experience and ensures children on the other side of the world will eventually benefit from advances made at SickKids.

When Dr. Kotani returns to Japan, he wants to help local hospitals adopt the team-based model of care practiced at SickKids. He believes collaboration is critical to improving outcomes for patients in his country – patients just like Evelyn.

SickKids offers the largest and most comprehensive training programs in Canada. Our cardiac training program is one of the largest in North America.

Anna, eight months. Anna carries no evidence of the malformation she was born with, thanks to state-of-the-art treatment in the image-guided therapy suite at SickKids. She’s “our little flower,” says her mother, Iryna.

When Iryna decided to have a home birth with her daughter Anna, she hadn’t expected that they would end up in the hospital anyway. Within minutes of her birth, Anna had to be rushed to SickKids because

of a large and unusual swelling on her chest – the size of her mother’s fist.

“It was a very frightening time,” says Iryna.

Fortunately, SickKids doctors were able to diagnose the abnormality – a lymphatic malformation – and determined that Anna was a candidate for leading-edge image-guided treatment.

Using ultrasound to guide them, Dr. Philip John and the interventional radiology team passed a small tube through Anna’s skin into the malformation and then injected an antibiotic solution to shrink it. It was the only invasive treatment she ever needed and she went home to her parents and two older brothers four days after the procedure.

Until image-guided treatment became available, surgery was the standard treatment for children like Anna. These surgeries often leave large scars, take longer to recover from and sometimes have to be repeated.

Anna recently passed her six-month check-up at SickKids. Her malformation has completely gone and she does not need to be seen again until she turns five.

SickKids has a vision to expand its current image-guided therapy facilities and to combine the skills of interventional radiology with surgeons and physicians to become the largest collaborative centre for image-guided care in the world.

“It’s a visionary approach,” says Dr. John. “It’s the best care we can offer our patients.”

SickKids currently helps more than 5,000 patients a year in our image-guided therapy suite. Through donor dollars, we will achieve our vision of expanding our facilities to become one of the largest multi-professional image-guided care centres for children in the world.

Vision leads to healing

Image-guided therapy shifts care from traditional ‘open’ surgeries to minimally invasive procedures.

Genetic & Genomic Medicine: Led by Dr. Stephen Meyn, researchers here will seek to prevent, treat and cure diseases with a genetic link.

Molecules, Cells & Therapies: Led by Drs. Lynne Howell and Bill Trimble, scientists here will speed the development of new drugs for illnesses that arise in childhood, but affect adult life.

Patients, Populations & Policy: Led by Dr. Martin Offringa, researchers here will improve practice and shape policy by studying health at a broad level.

Organ Systems & Disease: Led by Dr. Martin Post, scientists here will investigate the complex and chronic childhood illnesses that begin before and after birth.

Peter Gilgan. A friend of SickKids helping children around the world.

Jillian (with her little sister Sarah) believes in the power of research. “I got four extra years

with my little sister because of the research

and learning taking place at SickKids.” Sarah sadly passed away from a rare form of cancer in 2011.

With $114 million raised towards our $200-million fundraising goal, donors are helping make the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning a reality.

Jillian, 14, was at the front of the line in March 2012 when it came time to thank Peter Gilgan for his transformational gift of $40 million

for the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning. The gift is the single largest private donation ever made to a children’s hospital in Canada.

In making the donation, Gilgan, Founder and CEO of Mattamy Homes, recognized what the more than 6,000 other donors to the facility have also recognized: When it opens in August 2013, the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning will transform the current state of child health care and will have an impact on children today and for generations to come.

The $400-million, 21-storey world-class facility – under construction at the corner of Bay and Elm streets in Toronto – will bring together more than 2,300 SickKids scientists, trainees and child health research staff. The state-of-the-art laboratory and learning spaces will encourage interdisciplinary research and collaboration among scientists and clinicians to accelerate discoveries in the prevention, treatment and cure of childhood illnesses. “Hopefully,” says Jillian, “other kids like me won’t have to say goodbye to their sisters and brothers.”

“ When a child is sick, the only thing

that matters is that they get well.

SickKids’ outstanding patient

care, leading-edge research and

case for children everywhere. The

success of SickKids is due to the

inspiring work of all the staff and

volunteers at the hospital and I feel

honoured and privileged to play a

supportive role.” – Aaron Regent, Co-Chair, Mining Industry Hold‘em for Life Charity Challenge

“ We are proud to support a cardiac

fellowship at SickKids. Fellowships

help SickKids attract the brightest

“ SickKids holds a very special place in my family’s heart.

Because we believe so strongly in the hospital’s ability to

improve child health, we have made the decision to include

SickKids in our wills. It is important for me to know that

through our family’s annual donations, and through a bequest,

we are able to support the incredible work happening at

SickKids now and in the future.” – Katie Taylor, President and CEO, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

Arhum, 4.

Arhum loves to read. Sit her down and give her a book and she’ll start to tell you the story. On her visits to SickKids for cancer treatment, she rarely fails to make a trip to the Family Centre, which has been newly renovated thanks to donor dollars.

The Family Centre is a one-stop location for support and education at SickKids – a place where kids can curl up on the couches to read and where parents can sit at computers to research information about their child’s diagnosis or find a quiet place to talk and collect their thoughts. Last year, 40,000 parents and children paid a visit.

Now that Arhum is finished chemotherapy and on her way to recovery, she can look forward to many years of bedtime stories and turning pages.

Visit www.sickkidsfoundation.com to see
