THE BIGGS MUSEUM launches THE NEW BIGGS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

On November 8, 2011, the Biggs Museum of American Art launched the public phase of The New Biggs Capital Campaign, the final push for a $1.86 million fundraising initiative begun in 2010 to expand the museum and renovate the building at 406 Federal Street.

Visitors will hardly recognize the former space that is now occupied with a larger, state-of-the-art exhibitions gallery, new architectural finishes, upgraded exhibitions lighting, and an interactive artist studio. Guests will be amazed as they step into the new Grand Gallery, a centrally located, multi-purpose reception hall four times larger than any other gallery in the Museum. The Grand Gallery is equipped with integrated drop-down screens, video monitors, power-point projector, and audio speakers. Access from the Grand Gallery radiates into several other specialized galleries.

With funding, the Museum plans to continue renovations during the first half of 2012. The improvements and upgrades on the first floor will continue to the second and third floors. The galleries will be repainted, receive new flooring, LED track lighting and be given a new interpretive plan for the collections on view. The final stage of the Museum renovation is scheduled for the summer of 2013 with a reworking of the glass entrance facade to create a new three-story sculpture atrium.

The New Biggs campaign is a bold step to raise the quality and breadth of art education and appreciation, bringing the Biggs Museum to new levels. Campaign funds will enhance outdated facilities to create gallery environments that allow unprecedented access to the collections while better serving the community’s educational and gathering needs.

As of December 13, 2011, the Biggs Museum has raised $1.3 million in cash and pledges, more than half its goal. For more information on The New Biggs Capital Campaign, a pledge card and how you can help, please contact Jennifer Kemske at 302-674-2111 extension 105 or via email at [email protected].

The Biggs Museum is proud to announce the receipt of a grant in the amount of $2,000 from the Mid-Del Charitable Foundation. This

The 2011 grant is the third grant received from Mid-Del Charitable Foundation in support of youth educational programming at the Museum. The Mid-Del Charitable Foundation was developed to consolidate the charitable undertaking of the Delaware State Fair, Inc. to support Delaware-based organizations and charitable, educational, and scientific endeavors which address the wide range of issues, including health and human services, the arts, agriculture, education, and the environment.

When Dover merchant and landowner, Vincent Loockerman, died in 1785 the astounding 16-page inventory of his personal property valued his worth at over 2,200 British pounds at a time when a fine hand-carved mahogany armchair might cost just 3 pounds. The wealth that Loockerman and his descendents accumulated allowed his family to reside in fine homes, surrounded by expensive luxuries, for over 200 years. Vincent Loockerman would be surprised to find that he was probably Dover’s single largest land- owner of the 18th century and that he owned the earliest set of Delaware –made furniture known to 20th –century scholars. He would be astounded that his Philadelphia-made furniture of the 1770s and 80s is of such high quality that it is now showcased in America’s leading art collections such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Diplomatic Reception Rooms for the Secretary of State. He may even be pleased to know that he had a street named after him.

Visitors to the Biggs Museum may also be pleased to find that much of these fine furnishings and artwork will be exhibited in the Jewels of the Generations Exhibition from March 2 through June 26, 2012. To celebrate the beginning of the Biggs Museum’s twenty-year anniversary, the museum’s staff decided to return to the museum’s roots. The museum’s founder, Sewell C. Biggs, was an avid collector and admirer of the objects accumulated by Vincent Loockerman. Sewell even cited Loockerman as one of a handful of people who influenced the Biggs Museum’s mission. In tribute, the Jewels of the Generations Exhibition features Loockerman’s material legacy while discussing over 200 years of art collecting by his descendants, the Bradford family.

This influential family’s Dover residence sat almost untouched for over 200 years. Each generation lived with the riches of the past while adding treasures from their own times. The jewels that

have left the house, and are being borrowed back for this important exhibition, include a wealth of early American clothing, fashionable Victorian jewelry, European and Asian ceramics, American and European silver, important American and European portraits, and Delaware and Philadelphia furniture.

This exhibition will be accompanied by several public programs including talks by Biggs Museum Curator, Ryan Grover, and a textile workshop by State of Delaware Curator, Ann Baker Horsey. Please see the Biggs Museum’s website for a full schedule of related events at www.biggsmuseum.org. This exhibition will open with a free public reception on First Friday, March 2, from 5-8 p.m.

Loving Traditions: The Ann Marcus Valentines Card Collection Valentines cards have been popularly printed, mailed and received in Europe and America since the 1800’s. Printing innovations of the Industrial Revolution and the professionalization of the U.S. postal service ushered in a large number of card manufacturers. The design of early Valentines cards drew from popular art forms of the day decorated with the iconic Valentine decorative motifs of flowers, hearts and cupids. Collapsible three-dimensional, or “pop-up” cards, became especially popular with the addition of delicate layers of brightly-colored tissue paper and a sculptural quality that was easily mailed. The Biggs Museum is pleased to present a large sample of the late 19th- and early 20th-century pop-up Valentine card collection of Ann Marcus. Mrs. Marcus has been collecting these delicate art forms for over fifteen years and has amassed a collection of hundreds of cards. Plan to bring your Valentine to the Biggs Museum between February 3 and March 25, 2012 to learn about these remarkable greetings. Please, see the museum’s program schedule at www.biggsmuseum.org for Valentine-making workshops.

JUNIOR DOCENT PROGRAMAs part of our commitment to educational programming, the Biggs Museum partners with local schools to host the Junior Docent program. This program provides students with a unique opportunity to learn about the visual arts, apply their knowledge to specific works of art, and present their knowledge to their peers. Over the course of the program, Junior Docents build a visual arts vocabulary, develop communication and critical thinking skills, and learn

about the cultural history of the Museum’s collection. Student participants choose several objects from the Museum’s permanent collection to research. The Biggs Museum will loan library materials to the classroom for students to utilize while learning how to examine the art objects of their choice critically in order to understand the processes involved in the creation of the object. The Museum’s Educator visits each participating classroom to provide assistance to the students with their research and in developing their interpretations of Museum objects. The Junior Docents also create works of art throughout the year as they are inspired by objects in the Museum’s collection. The program concludes with dynamic and engaging Junior Docent led guided tours of the Museum for classmates and family members along with an exhibition of the student’s artwork. We have proudly partnered with Campus Community School for nine years. This is a free program for participating schools and we are always looking to bring the Biggs Museum’s collection to new groups of students. Please contact Beccy Cooper at 674-2111 ext. 101 or [email protected] for information on how to get your school involved.

Internships are offered by the Biggs Museum throughout the year and enable college students or recent college graduates to gain first-hand experience in their areas of interest or study. Interns, working under the guidance of Museum staff, assist with special projects, research and administrative support. Experience in art, art history, history, public relations or marketing is recommended but not essential. All internships are offered unpaid and may be used for academic credit. Students are responsible for making appropriate arrangements with their schools to receive credit for their internships. Hours vary and are flexible; however, a minimum of 10 hours a week is generally expected. Internships are available throughout the academic year, as well as during the summer. To apply for an internship, please submit a resume, cover letter, three references and a short writing sample to [email protected] or to the attention of Beccy Cooper at P.O. Box 711 Dover, DE 19903. If you are selected as a candidate for a potential internship, we will contact you to schedule an interview. For more information, please contact Beccy Cooper at 302-674-2111 extension 101.
