(left to right): On August 26, 2017, COCA held its third annual Taste of COCA, a free open house event at which more than 300 children, teens and adults sampled bite-sized classes in dance, theatre, voice and visual art and enjoyed a free breakfast courtesy of Butler’s Pantry. It was presented by the Moneta Foundation and hosted by the COCA Associate Board.

COCAdance, COCA’s modern student dance company, had the rare opportunity to work with the legendary Emmy Award-winning choreographer Judith Jamison, artistic director emerita of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, in November 2016. Over the weekend-long visit, she set her famous piece, Divining, on students and led a master class.

Dear Friends2016–2017 was an extraordinary year for COCA—one in which we celebrated our proud history and unveiled a bold vision for the future. The magic of this organization continued to reveal itself in studios and on stages, in classrooms and at camps, and through our patrons.

Bridging divides has been critical to our mission for 30 years, and this past year saw examples of COCA using the arts to facilitate community conversation. Our gallery season opened with Outside In: Paint for Peace, showcasing painted panels that boarded up businesses after the 2014 unrest in Ferguson.

In the spring, COCA enlisted New York City-based data artist Jer Thorp to present The St. Louis Map Room, a participatory project conceived at the intersection of art, technology, and social justice that encouraged St. Louisans to explore community.

In April, in celebration of our 30th Anniversary, all five of COCA’s student performance companies came together with musicians from Jazz St. Louis in an unprecedented collaboration to present Uptown.

In January, we opened Tracing COCA, an exhibition that told stories of our founding and of our journey from start-up non-profit to national model for multidisciplinary arts education—the fourth largest in the country. The opening of Tracing COCA also marked the public announcement of the $40 million Create Our Future Campaign to raise funds for the capital renovation and expansion of COCA’s historic building in University City and to grow endowment and reserves.

While we plan for our physical expansion, COCA’s programs and work in the community continue to grow. Enrollment in our summer camps hit a record in August, when our campus bustled with young people and showed the clear need for more space. Off campus, COCA continued to provide students with vital exposure to arts, including more than 1,000 students with whom we engaged over the summer as part of a new partnership with St. Louis Public Schools.

Whether you come to us as a student, a volunteer, or a community partner, we are grateful to have you in the COCA family. Thank you for sharing and supporting COCA’s vision to use the power of the arts and education to build a vibrant St. Louis that is creative, connected and inclusive.

1

The creative potential of everyone and the transformative power of the arts to change lives | Both the artistic process and the artistic product | Diversity and serving as a bridge to connect people | Inclusiveness and removing barriers to make the arts accessible | Collaboration | Innovation and delivering thought-provoking, relevant programs and experiences to the communities we serve | The people who work and volunteer to support our mission | Our unique St. Louis home and the community that is created when people learn together through the arts

Sincerely,

Kelly Pollock, Executive Director

In celebration of COCA’s 30th anniversary, Matthew Rushing of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater mounted Uptown, his 2008 exploration of the Harlem Renaissance. COCA students had the privilege to work with Rushing’s creative team, which included Hope Clarke, the Tony Award winning actress, dancer and director; and Renee Robinson, a 30-year Ailey veteran and a Dance Magazine Award winner. The April 2017 production was a collaboration between COCA’s five pre-professional dance, voice and theatre companies as well as with musicians from Jazz St. Louis.

The Millstone GalleryEmphasizing diversity in form, media and perspective, the Millstone Gallery program welcomes the community to examine the artistic process and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Pictured here, artist Brock Seals (right) and his mentor, artist De'Joneiro Jones, with Seals’s painting “King’s Blues.” Harlem Renaissance: Contemporary Response included diverse works by established artists and emerging, young St. Louis artists. The exhibition celebrated one of the most creative and intellectually productive eras in African-American history and complemented COCA’s 30th Anniversary production of Uptown.

Revealing the power of the arts to create conversation and healing; Outside In: Paint for Peace (August 27–October 28) showcased the painted panels that were used to boardup Ferguson and St. Louis businesses after the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown. Fractured Tranquility (December 1–18) highlighted works by artists Megan Grubb, William Morris and Brett Williams—the 2015 winners of the Creative Stimulus Award from Critical Mass for the Visual Arts.

Tracing COCA (January 27–March 9) honored our 30th anniversary by introducing viewers to the key individuals and moments in COCA’s history. Complementing our 30th anniversary production of Uptown, the exhibition Harlem Renaissance: Contemporary Response (March 24–May 14) presented diverse works inspired by the period by established and emerging local artists.

From August to November 2016, the Outside In: Paint for Peace exhibition presented a collection of painted panels from more than 100 Ferguson and St. Louis businesses impacted by unrest in 2014 and 2015 following the shooting death of Michael Brown. The works of art were displayed across the St. Louis region at COCA, the Ferguson Youth Initiative, Missouri History Museum, Sheldon Art Galleries, Vaughn Cultural Center and UMSL’s Gallery 210 and represented both the collaborative and

singular work of artists and community members responding to the pain, frustration, shock and anger felt by many. Outside In: Paint for Peace was presented by Regions Bank, curated by Jacquelyn Lewis-Harris and based on the award-winning children’s book Painting for Peace by Carol Swartout Klein (pictured above). It was reinstalled at America's Center as part of the National Urban League Conference in July 2017, and was seen by 20,000 conference participants.

Allegro, COCA's advanced voice ensemble, provided playful performances at the Winter Concert, demonstrated their serious side in three ballads from the Harlem Renaissance in Uptown and brought COCAcabana patrons to their feet with a dynamic performance of “My Shot” from Hamilton. Adagio, the junior voice company, debuted in 2016–2017, performing musical selections from Sunday in the Park with George and Follies at both the Winter and Spring Concerts.

COCA Theatre Company students performed in professional productions of thoughtfully selected plays and musicals. In November, COCA’s actors were showcased in Akeelah and the Bee, an inspirational story of a young student from Chicago whose passion for words allows her to overcome her tough daily life. In the spring, the students showcased their dramatic talents when they joined fellow Pre-Professional Division Companies in Uptown, an episodic tour through 1920s Harlem. Their season concluded with the COCA Summer Musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

In addition to their concerts on-site at COCA, both the Allegro and Adagio vocal companies represented COCA at performances across the St. Louis community at places including The Gatesworth, St. Jude's Walk and the WE Movement Youth Conference.

Richard Baron Leadership Circle Adopt-A-Dancer Program To increase funds in support of the growing number of Pre-Professional Division students, the Richard Baron Leadership Circle launched COCA’s Adopt-a-Dancer program in Fall 2015. With 65 percent of COCA’s students requiring financial assistance to participate in the Pre-Professional Division, Adopt-a-Dancer provided an opportunity for donors to help turn potential into reality for these young students.

COCA in the Community: The St. Louis Map Room COCA partnered with the New York-based Office for Creative Research to transform the former Stevens Middle School into The St. Louis Map Room (March 3–April 9), a community space for exploring and creating original, interpretive maps of the city. Over the course of the five-week exhibition, more than 30 community organizations, schools and companies participated in a guided map-making experience.
