M issionary spirit is not only about geographical territories, but about peoples, cultures and individuals, because the "boundaries" of faith do not only cross places and human traditions, but the heart of each

man and each woman. The Second Vatican Council emphasized in a special way how the missionary task:, that of broadening the boundaries of faith, belongs to every baptized person and all Christian communities; since “the people of God lives in communities, especially in dioceses and parishes, and becomes somehow visible in them, it is up to these to witness Christ before the nations" (Ad gentes, 37) …

...We must always have the courage and the joy of proposing, with respect, an encounter with Christ, and being heralds of his Gospel. Jesus came amongst us to show us the way of salvation and he entrusted to us the mission to make it known to all to the ends of the earth. All too often, we see that it is violence, lies and mistakes that are emphasized and proposed. It is urgent in our time to announce and witness to the goodness of the Gospel, and this from within the Church itself. It is important to never to forget a fundamental principle for every evangelizer: one cannot announce Christ without the Church. Evangelization is not an isolated individual or private act; it is always ecclesial.

Administrative Report

For the second year running Richard Owens our Secretary and myself have decided to submit a joint ‘administrative report’ which form the annual report to

members and the wider Church community – it is also to be read in combination with the audited accounts(presented in summary form later in this booklet)

The CMU exists to be the forum for missionaries in England and Wales. We work towards this aim by engaging with partners including the dioceses, Missio, other charities, educational institutions and civil society. The most visible sign of our work is the annual parish appeal- but increasingly this is supplemented by other projects.

We held a successful AGM and conference in Hammersmith in September 2012. We facilitated groups discussions on key planning questions – such as where will we be in five years time? The feedback was written up and will be re-visited this year. One of the suggestions in this group-work was that members would value more opportunities to meet through the year. A calendar of “missionaries connecting” events was produced with a variety of themes.

This year we have continued to meet with various stakeholders including some discussions around vocation ministry and schools outreach- most of which will be developed in the next twelve months. We have participated in the meetings of CAF (Catholic Africa Forum) – facilitated by the International Department at the Bishops Conference of England & Wales.

We are continuing to keep the ’door open’ on our offer to seminaries to give some pastoral advice to students. . During the year the Sisters undertook a localised trial of visiting girls secondary schools in North London. The CMU as a whole is looking into schools projects in collaboration with Missio. It was great to receive seven applications for the mission alive innovation award. The reports from the funded-projects

will appear on the CMU website. A warm welcome to our new members: Daughters of Divine Love, Missionaries of St Paul and Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary the Mother of Christ

We also have membership enquiries from lay missionary groups plus male and female missionary congregations.

During the year we have had three excellent meetings of the Executive and thanks should go to those who give up their time to be the strategic leadership of the charity.

The President and Secretary have been co-operating again this year to deliver a successful programme for overseas missionaries coming to work in the UK. Another programme will run in spring 2014.

Our various committees have met during the year. The sisters mission committee met during the year and continues to combine its resources in terms of promotion and financial admin.

In order to reduce the charity’s cash reserves, 2013 saw a

temporary lifting in the levy on appeal totals which members pay –

this appears to have been well received in difficult times.

The parish appeals programme continues to be a vital way of raising awareness of mission. As an Executive we are well aware of the pressures on parish priests for appeals and the legitimate expectation on our appealers to be relevant and well prepared. With this in mind we are organising some training.

In the coming year we will have to look at renewing the mandate of the Executive(including the role of President) and we warmly encourage members to consider putting themselves forward to serve the missionary community in England & Wales from 2014-2016. It promises to be an interesting and rewarding time.

The CMU makes an effort to bank as ethically as possible, while seeking the best return– with the main account shifted to the Cooperative Bank. Reserves are divided between the Charities Aid Foundation and Virgin Money. In 2010 the charity received almost no return on its investments– in 2012 this position is more healthy.

E ach year the parish

mission appeals raise

funds for the members of the CMU Mission

Committees—which is spent

on their vital work overseas

and supporting the

congregations/missionary

development and promotion

at home.

Although these are difficult

financial times, it is important to remember that the annual parish mission appeal is about

far more that money. It is the primary opportunity in the Church’s year to hear first hand from a missionary– to

hear the empowering message

that the Church is alive and growing in all four corners of the globe. It is a especially welcomed opportunity to

remind people of their baptismal call to be a missionary and present possibilities of taking steps in

this direction.

Another aspect which CMU members appreciate is the enormous pressure under

which parish priests operate– especially the request for appeals from independent charities—which however

worthy– are not officially parts

of the programme.

Lord Jesus Christ, friend to the outcast and servant of the poor,

walk with us today, we pray as we act in your name around the world.

You asked us to consider ‘who is my neighbour?’ Help us to embrace your radical Gospel of unconditional love.

When our personal barriers and judgements fall away—we will surely work wonders in your name—across all cultures and continents.

Your love opens the doors of our hearts and leads the way to peace and wholeness.

Your mission of saving love becomes our daily service to the poor and marginalised at home and overseas.

Glory to you O Christ– Saviour of the world—through your cross and resurrection and through the ministry of all the baptised .

Amen
