A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear member:
We have left the “status quo” long behind us.
Global society and economy changed. The Mexico-United States relation has been redefined and this is a lesson that the success of our businesses depends on our ability to respond to this “new normality” continuously, and to do so in an agile and assertive manner.
2019 was a dynamic and unique year. A new Federal Administration started and it brought a new government project with it. Regarding the bilateral relation, it faces relevant challenges to maintain a safe and efficient border.
It was also the year in which Mexico consolidated as the main trade partner of the United States and we achieved an agreement pertaining the USMCA, whose implementation represents the start of a new commercial era in North America.
AmCham has been a key player throughout these processes as it is the benchmark of the binational business community in Mexico serving as a reference both for our members and for the economic activity in both countries.
Throughout this first year as President of the Chamber, I have experienced firsthand that, with the participation of our members and experts, we are a single voice to engage in a constructive dialogue with the Government and Society. This dialogue contributes to foster better business conditions, strengthen the Rule of Law,
establish clear rules, and provide security as well as legal certainty for businesses. This is the basis of reciprocity to continue building together.
We endorse a true social commitment with Mexico. In addition to generating two and a half million direct formal jobs, we are also part of a community that shares its best corporate practices, thereby promoting the development of national talent, a better use of technology and innovation thus improving the well-being for millions of employees and their families.
As leaders in each of our industries, we face challenges that are as big as our responsibilities to overcome them. I invite you to do this together, and continue working with renewed conviction to make AmCham businesses detonators of change and opportunities, strenghtening the Mexico-United States relations even more.
It has been an honor for me to preside over our Chamber at this crucial time, because this is when we have even more opportunities to have a positive impact. Thank you for your trust and support.
JORGE L. TORRESPresident, American Chamber/Mexico
