About us

Our VisionTo reduce the impact of mental health disorders, life, work and relationship stresses and social isolation in the community.

Our MissionWe are an organisation contributing to the wellbeing of Victorians with a priority for people living in the City of Monash. We provide counselling and support services.

Our ValuesCaring, Integrity, Inclusiveness, Excellence, Accountability, Partnership.

Our HistoryWavecare began in 1978 as a church based counselling and support agency initially supported by volunteers. In 1980 we became an Incorporated Association with a constitution governed by a Committee of Management and staffed by professional Counsellors and Psychologists. This has enabled us to provide support services including group based programs for women and children in particular. We have functioned for many years as a result of the support of volunteers and community groups who provide direct services and fundraising activities.

Thirty years ago we started Glencare, a planned activity group for the frail and elderly or those with a disability, which has been wholly government funded.

Monash City Council has provided substantial support for most of the years Wavecare has been established.

Wavecare: Keeping Lives

on Track.

CEO’s ReportRAY PATERSON

Wavecare’s 40th AnniversaryI am very proud to be a part of Wavecare as it marks its 40th anniversary.

Towards the end of last year we were searching for a short, powerful phrase that would reflect the great work that has been done here for so many years. After much deliberation we chose a very simple but accurate statement Wavecare: Keeping Lives on Track.

Originally called The Christian Community Care Centre, Wavecare was founded in 1978 by the Glen Waverley Church of Christ. Two part-time voluntary social workers provided parenting programs, marital counselling and vocational guidance. It wasn’t officially known as Wavecare until after 1980 when it separated from its church base and became incorporated.

Meeting client demand and securing ongoing, reliable funding are current issues that I was interested to learn have been present for most of Wavecare’s history. Reading through past board reports and the 20-year overview (compiled by former office administrator Lorraine Machell), these ongoing struggles were prevalent.

Wavecare has always been able to attract wonderful people from different cultural and professional backgrounds who have contributed their wisdom and labour for the benefit of both the organisation and the people seeking help from it. Volunteers have been the backbone of Wavecare and at times there have been over 50 local people volunteering in roles as board members, office administration, supporting the Glencare programme or through fundraising. There have also been many local businesses and community organisations that have supported Wavecare over the years.

Wavecare has received funding from State and Federal Governments to run various groups and programs but in particular, it is the City of Monash that must be singled out for its consistent financial and in-kind support.

Today, Wavecare is a very professional organisation with its roots in a foundation of community support. I believe this is a major reason why it has survived when so many small community organisations have not. Currently there are around 20 volunteers and 12 paid part-time staff.

The range of services has increased quite dramatically over the years, as has the amount of administration and reporting. The City of Monash is an area of great cultural diversity and I am very pleased that some of our services are now provided in languages that are reflective of this.

CEO’s ReportContinued...

“Throughout all of the

life stages, Wavecare

helps people to achieve balance and fulfilment.”

The administration of an organisation such as Wavecare is no small task. Our board and our administrative staff must keep abreast of the standards of care and we must be able to comply with the legislative requirements that govern an incorporated, not-for-profit body. We must also remain accountable to our funding bodies. This is made possible by our highly dedicated administrative staff who recently managed the setting up of a digital filing and client booking system.

Wavecare’s stated focus is on mental health but I feel it is much more than that. The Glencare Program, for example, is about keeping people from becoming socially isolated, and much of our work with parents and young people is about the prevention of social problems that could lead to mental health problems.

The complexity of modern life has arguably created more problems for us to manage. Research suggests that people today are more likely to become socially isolated and while people now live longer lives, they often do so with a chronic illness. These factors can often have an impact on mental health.

Most of us experience the benefits and pitfalls of smart phones, computers and social media. Not only are they changing the way we acquire knowledge, communicate and use our time, but computer and phone screens are changing the way the developing brain functions neurologically, with as yet unknown consequences.

All of these factors challenge our mental health professionals who must diligently provide the latest evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Throughout all of the life stages, Wavecare helps people to achieve balance and fulfilment.

Looking at all the board reports and statistics of the last 40 years, I estimate that over 40 000 lives have been touched by Wavecare to date. That is a lot of lives being kept on track.

I am pleased to report that Wavecare has had a productive and positive year. This of course is good news not only for the Board, staff and volunteers but also for the community at large. The organisation continues to provide a valuable service to individuals and families.

This is a significant year in the history of Wavecare, as the organisation celebrates its 40th year of operation. There is no doubt that the journey has had its ups and downs but to continue to serve the community after 40 years is an amazing achievement. Every person that has contributed to the life of Wavecare needs to be acknowledged and thanked.

I would like to acknowledge the generous financial and moral support that the Monash Council, and the former Waverley Council, have given to the organisation over this period. Without this level of support Wavecare would not have survived or thrived. More recently, Monash Council staff and councillors have agreed to relocate Wavecare to the Euneva Car Park site, a very exciting proposition.

The Board has continued to work effectively with the CEO, Ray Paterson, as well as being productive during our monthly Board deliberations.

I would also like to thank Michelle Gilmore, Office Manager, who has taken on an additional role in Business Development for the organisation and Pari Balsara-Mistry, Coordinator of the Glencare Program. Pari has also assisted Ray in a counselling capacity for individuals who are currently living in a women’s shelter. Both Michelle and Pari have taken up challenging roles within the organisation.

Finally, on behalf of the Board I wish to acknowledge the work of all the staff and volunteers, their dedication and commitment is to be congratulated.

40th Anniversary – AGM Glencare coordinator’s note I took over the reins of Glencare towards the end of 2015 and it gives me a great sense of happiness to see how constructively the program has grown over the years. The last 12 months have been fun yet challenging as we have embraced new changes, increased participant numbers and prepared for the gruelling accreditation program.

All our participants have had the opportunity to engage in a range of activities that have been tailored to suit their needs and abilities. These include strength-based exercises, a variety of art and craft programs, educational speakers, trivia days and in-house movies.

On October 24, Glencare underwent its accreditation program that was conducted by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (AACQA) and it is with great delight that I say the program passed on every standard set by the Commonwealth. Some of our volunteers and participants were given a chance to interact with the quality assessor and the positive feedback received was very humbling.

Over the last financial year, Glencare has been supported by grants and in-kind assistance from different community groups. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Monash for their in-kind support by providing us with a spacious community hall that has made the growth of the program easy and comfortable to all individuals. Special thanks and mention to the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) which is our main funding body for Glencare. A big thank you to the Country Women’s Association for their ongoing support and putting together all the blankets that we have distributed at Glencare or to people in need. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Hearing Australia who have come on-board and conducted free hearing tests for our seniors each year.

We have been fortunate to have some interesting speakers and presentations this year and I am very grateful to Max Harris (Seniors Stepping Out Safely), Beryl Logie (Muscle, Bone and Joint Health), Bryan Paten, Karin Koeppen, Brian Williams (Consumer Affairs), Bolton Clarke (formerly RDNS), Irene Kearsey and Natasha Ng (Xtra Home-care) for their time.

In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to every single volunteer for all their hard work and dedication to the Glencare program. It is your commitment and diligence that makes Glencare successful and a safe environment for all our seniors.
