College Background

Creek Street Christian College was established in 1981 and offers a high-quality education in a caring environment to the families of Bendigo and surrounds.

Throughout its 37-year history Creek Street Christian College has grown from 27 students to 300 students with young people in 3-year old, 4-year old and Prep to Year 10 single stream classes. Staff numbers have grown to 40+ with a range of skilled teachers, administration staff, cleaners and maintenance workers.

Our students are provided with opportunity to learn in structured classrooms where learning is encouraged through respect for the teacher and care for one another.

As a Christian college the school places emphasis on Bible-based values and the outworking, on a daily basis, of genuine faith. Our purpose is to help students discover all God made them to be, regardless of the future pathway that He may lead them on.

With all students on the one centrally located Bendigo campus we offer many unique opportunities which make use of the college facilities at all year levels. Our Early Learning Centre students spend time in the wider college grounds and enjoy the use of many of the college facilities including the library, stadium and music room. Every year level has a buddy class who they spend time with while engaging in learning activities together and of course having fun.

At the Junior School level, Prep to Year 4, a strong emphasis is placed on areas of Literacy and Numeracy and parents are regularly kept informed of their children’s progress via written feedback in our Record Folders and our college Learning Management System, CANVAS. Each of these year levels has a homeroom teacher plus additional support from another trained adult for the most important Literacy block.

Our Prep to Year 6 classes all commence the day with a period of individual reading during which the teachers have time to hear students read and monitor their progress. Communication with parents to support various aspects of student educational development is highly valued.

Individual learning styles and levels of ability and interests are catered for through a variety of teaching methods including the use of various thinking tools, individual and group work, explicit teaching, iPads and computer labs. Handwriting, Phonics, Grammar and times tables remain key foundational life skills and their value is reinforced throughout the school.

As students move into Middle School, Year 5 to Year 7, they are gradually introduced to a wider range of subjects and a larger number of different teachers thus assisting their transition into Senior School. The one-to-one iPad program is introduced at Year 7 thus building on the already varied delivery of the curriculum.

Moving into Senior School leadership opportunities are continued and built upon with the college having Prefect leadership roles at Year 10 and a Student Representative Council represented by students from Year 5 through to Year 10. Students are encouraged to develop their leadership skills and grow and develop personally as well as academically.

A wide range of electives are offered at Year 9 and 10 level which include VET subjects, VCE subjects and additional subjects which cater for a wide range of interests and future career paths.

It is our belief that the opportunities we present to students will form a strong foundation for the remainder of their lives.

Offering a seamless education from Playgroup to Early Learning Centre to School is central to our college goals. Supporting families who want their children educated in a Christian environment is paramount to our thinking.

Creek Street Christian College has proven itself over many years to be a school where young people can be encouraged to develop in all areas of their lives. This includes their academic, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A testament

to this history is the number of ex-students who now send their own children to Creek Street Christian College.

Principal’s Report

2017 was truly a landmark year for Creek Street Christian College. After many years of planning our very own Early Learning Centre commenced operation in term 2. This building was the dream of our founding pastor Mr William Kean and it was his son, Mr Geoff Kean, and great grandson, Cooper Lea, who opened the building this year.

There is no doubt that this facility will provide our 3-year old and 4-year old students with an amazing God-centred commencement to their education where they are encouraged to be all they have been made to be.

That was not the only excitement for the year. We also opened our renovated classrooms for Year 3 and 4, our new computer lab and our beautiful sensory garden.

Thank you so much to the workmen who worked tirelessly to put these wonderful areas in place for our community. Thank you particularly to GA&PA Pilcher builders, Plans for People and Living Edge Construction. It was a wonderful team effort and we are so proud of the amazing new areas that our young people and community are now able to learn in and enjoy.

We are so thankful for all that God has provided us with and we will enjoy His provision for many years to come. May we all continue to appreciate His goodness as the college grows and develops into all He would have it to be.

Our Vision

To provide Christian education and training to children so that they are equipped to impact their community, our nation and the world for the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Mission Creek Street Christian College has been established to provide families with a Christian education, within a caring and disciplined environment that will enable children to fully develop their God‐given talents and academic abilities, so that they are able to contribute effectively to the changing society of which they are a part. The College encourages and supports students to develop a positive and wholesome outlook on life, to become self‐disciplined people and to be responsible and caring members of the community.

Strategic Planning and Development

The College has a strategic planning mechanism which involves 7 key development areas. These are:

• Student Wellbeing

• Staff Wellbeing

• Faith

• Teaching and Learning

• Community

• Environment and Infrastructure

• Governance and Leadership On a four‐year rotational basis the leadership team, in conjunction with the College Council, reviews each of these areas in detail to evaluate the working documents which unpin each one, and to add further strategies to develop and enhance these aspects of the college. All other areas are also present and reviewed as part of an ongoing process. For 2017 our major focus areas were Student Wellbeing and Staff Wellbeing. After reviewing our Student Wellbeing practices, we have put in place a new staff position of Student Wellbeing Coordinator. This member of staff looks after students in areas of their learning by making sure our Individual Education Plans are in place where they are required and that Parent Support Group meetings for these students are conducted regularly. They offer individual support where required and we are very pleased with the progress that has been made because of this initiative. The development of a child and their learning progress is a many facetted thing and our Student Wellbeing Coordinator is able to give support to the whole child.

Two of our major building projects have been completed and so fulfilled the first part of our future planning to provide and maintain excellent facilities for our students. Plans were also put in place in 2017 for the next project - Administration Development - Stage 1. This will include the extension to our auditorium, so we can seat all of our students, the addition of staff toilets, a meeting room, new offices and a new college entrance facade.
