ABOUT AMCHAM

The American Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic is a non-profit, non--government organization governed independently by a board of directors elected from and by its membership.

We are a member of the US Chamber of Commerce and the European Council of American Chambers of Commerce (ECACC).

We connect more than 1500 top executives and company owners representing almost 400 com-panies. Our member network spans industries, sizes and nationalities. We organize around 100 networking and educational activities annually, including Leadership Cocktails, Seminars, Debates and Discussions, General Manager Breakfasts and Evenings, a Golf Tournament and our Thansk-giving Ball.

We promote the country with our Czech Republic Overview, and by briefing potential investors. The overview is distributed by Czech government offices around the world and through our network.

We promote our members mainly on our website CzechMarketPlace.cz. The CzecMarketPlace.cz allows our members to promote themselves to thousands of potential partners.

We advocate legislative and regulatory reform. Our members and staff were integrally involved in the complete reform of the bankruptcy act, the new commercial registry process, reform of public procurement, the introduction of social security caps, the original package of investment incen-tives, more liberal rules for financial collateral, the entry of the Czech Republic into the US visa waiver program. We are working with universities and companies to expand research opportunities.

We serve as a platform for exchanging best practices and experiences in managing an organiza-tion. The best management styles and approaches are promoted in annual Best Office publication aiming to serve as an inspiration to various companies willing to increase their competitiveness and to improve their operational excellence.

We continue to expand our charity project One World, Many Voices. It aims to contribute to deve-lopment of the community involvement in the Czech society. We focus on building long-term part-nership in projects prepared in cooperation of schools, municipal authorities, local communities and representatives of our member companies.

The world seems to be moving faster these days. We seem to exist in a constant stream of head-lines that moves from one threat to our stability to another. Whether it is the spread of religious conflict or the wary circling of nations searching for advantage, our environment constantly seems at the borders of equilibrium. What keeps us steady?

Community. The durable connections of networks of people who share the belief in a future which can more prosperous and more secure. Without these communities, it would be very difficult for the economy to prosper and for each of our individual businesses to succeed.

What we want to do at AmCham is to create a community of individuals who believe that a market economy offers the fairest environment for individual activity. Then we want to strengthen all the individuals in the network by sharing information on their activities (either physically or online), building their capacity to run a business by sharing best practices, and advocating for a regulatory environment that encourage innovation through competition.

We have three types of physical networks for achieving this. Business and market intelligence is conducted through small top level events such as our GM Breakfasts and our sector councils (manufacturing, health care, real estate). Best practice is shared through our committees, which are based on organisational functions such as human resource and marketing. Policy advocacy is pursued through task force created either by business sector councils or Best Office Committees.

All of this is supplemented by online information platforms. CzechMarketPlace promotes your business. CzechCompete promotes economic policy solutions. And the AmCham website provides a calendar and update on activities.

Last year, for the first time in our existence, we sat a clear purpose for our organization. We want to contribute to a 60% rise in the GDP per capita by 2025. Such an increase should get us close to a top ten EU economy.

We know GDP may not be the best measure of economic prosperity. We also know what we alone cannot create such growth. We do believe by building a community aimed toward that target, and then promoting their businesses, improving their business processes, and creating an economic policy environment that surpresses political risk and encourages economic risk, we can make the Czech Republic a better place to work and live.

That is our aim. I am proud to serve that aim. I hope you, too, are proud of the community we have built together, and will work with us again this year to make the next twelve months a period of progress.

We are the community of next. The next new management trend, the next new business opportunity, the next advance in public policy, the next step in professional development. We get our ideas and energy from the talent and drive of the deep pool of business leaders who form our community. We believe that the only constant is change, and that is our duty as leaders to be an agents that make that change positive for all parts of society.The Czech Republic will become the leading business environment in Europe when it has the most innovative entrepreneurs and man-agers chasing the most interesting opportuni-ties in a policy environment that encourages investment and minimizes risk. AmCham addresses all parts of that equation. We use events, websites, and publications as a network to exchange best practices and new ideas of how to run an organization. Our CzechMar-ketplace serves as the central portal of our effort to collect the freshest opportunities and connect our members. And we work with the government and other associations to create an economic policy framework that stimulates business, not inhibits it.

We achieve this through a toolkit of services. Those are listed below along with some sug-gestions about how to best use them and who to contact to get more involved in making this a better place to do business.

NetworksOur primary networking channels are small and informal exchanges between top decision-ma-kers called GM Breakfasts and GM Evenings. Our staff uses their knowledge of your business needs to link you with potential partners so that you have the chance to sit down and talk about your common interests. How can you use it? We also offer a range of events designed for you to celebrate your success with your business partners and other members of the community. Best OfficeManaging well means constantly making your office run better even as it must do more and more as markets change around you. AmCham‘s Best Office service combines best practices events, publications and online platform. Council on Czech CompetitivenessThe Council for Czech Competitiveness is our primary vehicle for debating, researching and advocating policy. It is a platform for co-ope-rating with policy associations and the gover-nment. One example is The Platform for Trans-parent Public Procurement, which combined the efforts of more than 30 political parties, government offices, or private sector associ-ation to help draft the government approved reform of the Act on Public Procurement. We are now working on packages of policy that will increase investment and high wage job creati-on along the Prague-Brno corridor, as well as align value-added manufacturing with public research. Work with us to establish a working group on key competitiveness issues, join the team that conducts the competitiveness

surveys and publishes the report, attend the issue roundtables with government decision--makers to ensure that your views are heard directly. Join our committees and discuss cu-rrently drafted legislation or learn more about it at our events and from our monitoring service. Our committees address labor, tax, commerci-al, civil, real estate law issues, or developments in the fields of energy and health care, for example. LeadershipOur Leadership activities as our primary in-terface with the world outside the business community. Its mandate is to broaden our so-cial responsibility activities. Czech Republic Overview 2015-16New issue of annual informative brochure about the Czech Republic including current key economic indicators, data & information about doing business in the Czech Republic, specific sector briefings, details on tax system and other information relevant to those looking to invest and/or operate in the Czech Republic was released in the number of 2000 copies, for the first time already in June and with the new design.

23rd General AssemblyAnnual general meeting of AmCham members to get the report on the past year and to appoint the new Board of Directors took place at National Technical Museum. Michal Nebeský, Citibank Country Officer for Czech Republic was confirmed unanimously to serve as the AmCham President for the second year.

New membership year 2015/16 startsAmCham entered the new membership year with the total number of 364 members. Any company can apply for the membership which is subject to the Board of Directors´ approval.

2015-16 Best Office publication – EngagementAmCham released 5th issue of its annual publication which serves as an inspiration for managing a business and is a usefull tool for monitoring new trends and tips when managing different departments. Thiss issue´s theme was Engagement and 55 articles covered the topics such as Employees, Employers, Digital Transformation, Strategic Communications, Social Responsibility and Working Environment. Publication is

distributed nationalwidely, except of membership through Czech Regional Business Chambers,

Regional Development Agencies, Regional CzechInvest Offices, Trade Offices & Business Incubators.

Summer Committee pique-nique45 committee members gathered in the beautiful garden of The Mark Luxury Hotel Prague to meet and chat with their colleagues from other Committees & AmCham structures. It´s already a tradition that “Bring your home made cake” tasting competition takes places during the event. This time the winner was Lenka Nová of Squire Patton Boggs.

Conference Public Procurement of Medical Devices and Technologies in HospitalsIn 2014 the European Commission endorsed the directive on public procurement that summarizes the principles of economically advantageous public tenders. Public procurement is one of the never-ending topics of economic debates, particularly in the health care sector. Another recurring issue is whether and how other aspects than price, such as the quality of goods, wider context of the purchase, life cycle of the product, added value etc., could be involved. These and other related aspects of public procurement in health care were discussed at the conference which was attended by 170 hospital representatives from all around the Czech Republic.

HR Committee incl. a talk & discussion on Compensation & BenefitsHR Committee meetings take place every last Friday in a month and they serve as a platform for HR professionals, both service providers and corporate representatives, to exchange latest trends, challenges and best practices. Ten-minute Talks are organized during every Committee

meeting and within the talk on a beneficial topic a member shares knowledge, speaks about new trends or shows different way of doing things. During this membership year the

Committee organized 8 different talks, this time the topic was Compensation & Benefits, what companies can do and what employees want, and was facilitated by Deloitte.

CSR Reporting - reporting of non-financial data/ GRI methodology & best practicesA new European Directive on disclosure of non-financial and diversity information by certain large undertakings and groups entered into force in December 2014. EU Member states now have two years to transpose it into national laws, and it is expected that the first company reports will be published in 2018 covering financial year 2017-2018. The Directive requires companies concerned to disclose information on policies, risks and outcomes in environmental matters, social and employee aspects, respect for human rights, anticorruption and bribery issues, and diversity in their management. The new rules will apply to large companies with more than 500 employees. Issue was discussed by Viktor Dušek of KPMG Legal s.r.o., advokátní kancelár , Martin Šabo of Ministry of Finance a Radka Nedvedová of PwC Ceská republika.

6 Wins and 3 fails in B2B Online MarketingIn 60 minutes, Petr Passinger from Kentico shared six real-life examples of online marketing to be inspired by and three fails to avoid. Workshop organized by Marketing & Communications Committee attracted 40 members who appreciated the most that someone was finally brave enough to share the fails. Those fails were about the viral that did not happen, the microsite that did not win the organic search battle and the battle between SEO and Branding.

Followed by lively discussion together with Petr Návrat, Deputy Director on AmCham Real Estate Committee activities and views in the area of city/regional development. This event will be followed by a roundtable with Petr Hlavácek, Director of IPR during second half of 2016.

Your Competitive Advantage: Customer LoyaltyMore than 30 participants discussed Customer Loyalty/Customer Experience moderated by Pavel Šiška, Partner in Charge of Deloitte. 5 panelists from different sectors shared experiences with the audience, what works in their business, how to change satisfied customer into loyal customer, and how to measure the customer satisfaction.

HR Committee incl. a talk & discussion on MillennialsRegular meeting of HR Committee members, this time followed by a talk on Millennials facilitated by Deloitte and Xerox. By 2020, roughly 50% of the workforce will be Millennials, rising to 75% by 2030. During the talk a better understanding of what is really important to attract and retain top talent, now and in the future was revealed.

Workplace of the FutureWhat will the workplace of the future look like? Is the era of open-space offices over? Or, is the future no office at all? Can the space we work in really affect our mood and performance? How can our offices help to attract and retain employees? What are the experiences of people working in the latest office designs in Prague? Those and many more questions were discussed during fully booked event hosted by AVAST Software at their offices. Jeanne Trojan, Executive Presentation Coach & AmCham HR Committee Chair, did a great job again by moderating the discussion and engaging the audience. Speakers from Avast, CBRE, Microsoft and Ian Bryan Architects sit in the panel and shared their experiences and views on what the future workplace will be and look like.

Business Breakfast with Minister of Transport Dan TokOn the occasion of remaining 1,5 year of mandate of Bohuslav

Sobotka´s government, the Minister formulated ANO‘s economic vision for the Czech Republic. He included presenting his mission in

the role of Minister of Transport, Q & A followed. In April Dan Tok achieved 19 months in the function of Minister of Transport.

He included presenting his mission in the role of Minister of Finance followed by Q & A.

11th Regional Tax ConferenceMain topic of the Conference with 19 speakers was balance between tax system attractiveness (competitive rates, attracting FDI) & tax fraud elimination (effective collection, implementing tools easing life for companies complying to the rules & adopting strict measures against wrong-doers). The conference, organized shortly before the Slovak presidency of the Council of the EU in Bratislava, focused on attractiveness of tax systems as well as tax evasion and profit shifting. It brought together Visegrad group (V4) countries´ political leaders, tax experts, representatives of public institutions and the business community, as well as experts from the European Commission and the OECD.

Tourism is a huge segment within the Czech Economy, I would like to see the Chamber bring together leaders from all aspects of the Industry and to drive a plan to get Governmental change and investment. This would include other chambers in order to get more attention.

Could you name your 5 top books that influenced the way you live, work and behave?

Steve Jobs - the biography, Richard Branson - The Virgin Way & Losing my Virginity, Alan Sugar’s What you see is what you get, Duncan Bannatyne’s Anyone can do it, Margaret Thatcher’s The Downing street years.

In all these books however different they are, they also have fairly similar point to make, in that anyone can do it. Work hard, take calculated risks and don’t accept being told that it’s not possible or something can’t be done, there is always a way. Don’t be afraid to fail, the only real way to enjoy success is to have failed before, dare to be different, have the courage of your convictions and be prepared to challenge authority. Overall understand that change will happen, the question is how much can you instigate this and shape it to your advantage. Finally that you are only constrained by your ability to dream and create.

What professional skills and personal qualities you value the most at your colleagues/employees?

In the hospitality business those that stand out are, have courage and are brave, are honest, highly committed and flexible, well organized, have a creative streak, be able to communicate well, have a strong leadership style and an intense sense of humor. Working in a hotel is not about selling beds or food and beverage, it is about helping people create positive life experiences and memories that they will cherish forever. When buying a TV or a car and it doesn’t work you replace it, when you stay in a hotel or have a meal if it’s not right it cannot be replaced or fixed the memory is imprinted and is there forever.

What are the main goals of your business in the near future?

Our goal for the next 6 months is to promote and educate our market to the fact that we have completely new rooms and to ensure that everyone knows about it. To continue to be innovative around our Food and Beverage program to attract a stronger local following and bring more fun to the hotel. Thus creating an environment where guests which to come and stay and on the other side where the emerging Czech youth wish to work and develop their careers.

Since I am keen on working in Energy Efficiency Task Force I always have these meetings and events in my calendar. I believe every company consuming energies for production should follow recent trends to be more efficient and competitive. I am always putting networking events in my calendar. Unfortunately, other duties are sometimes against my plans and wishes.


I would appreciate lessons learnt workshops on procurement and tender organization themes to be organized. Some informal activities with face to face interaction with other AmCham members will be highly welcomed from my side as well. I do many sports and like to meet people at different places while playing or watching tennis, golf, ice hockey or football.


Honestly I could hardly name my top 5 books that somehow influenced the way I live because I am not studious reader. I must say the strongest influencers are members of my family. 30 years ago it was my parents, 15 years ago my wife has started being most important and recently besides her it is my children.


I need to know that I can trust people I am working with. Actually I put personal qualities like amenability, adherence and fairness slightly above professional skills. I am glad I am working in Tebodin with highly educated professionals so there is no doubt about level of professional skills.


The main goal this year is to catch challenging opportunities appearing on the market, bring work to the company and sustain our growth. That is my mission in the near future.

I think AmCham topics are quite large and cover most of the interesting topics that happen in the business, so I would continue in the same way. The only thing I would welcome is a deeper discussion about the socio-demographic changes influencing business in long term.

Could you name your top books and people that influenced the way you live, work and behave?

Dale Carnegie books, Paulo Coelho – Alchymist, books of Czech historian Vlastimil Vondruška, journal National Geographic (since the Czech version started in 2002), Warren Buffet.


I value people that always do, what they promise, that I can rely on them. I value active behavior and positive thinking, people that come not only with problems, but with the problem solution. I value people with helicopter view capability, thinking in long term perspective.


Long term client satisfaction. I want to be considered as a fair partner and financial expert by my clients.

What are your main personal goals?

To continually improve my knowledge and overview (not only in finance). I want to keep my work-life balance as I do until now. :-)

AmCham Real Estate Committee defined one of its „issues of the year“ the topic of the City Development and you became one of the leaders of activities connected to this topic. Why the Committee decided to address this issue and what goals it wants to achieve with respect to the City Development.

Every action creates reaction. The current situation in real estate, development, investment and construction is not sustainable any more. The society, political and law environment went to extre-me and it is a time to be active. We decided to be proactive in education, discussion with public and with all stakeholders. The city development has to be seen as an important part of our lives without which the business but also our live in cities would not be as good as it can be. By education, positive influencing of state´s and city officers, politicians, students and public, we need to help to change the situation. There is no one else, who will do it for us.


I really appreciate the breakfast discussions with some of the top politicians or business influencers as well as I highly appreciated very good discussion at GM breakfasts. It makes sense to me to go there and see other people opinion and their perspective on current topics and situation.


I´m such a bad reader unfortunately. After a whole day of reading contracts, emails and different agreements, I want to spend some time with my daughter, go out, do some barbecue. However, there is a comic book which I would recommend from Guy Delisle - Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, a really good eye opener.


I met many people who were smart and switched on, but had no commitment, no will to work, deliver and being lazy. Therefore, I always appreciate rather someone with will to work hard, proactivity, team spirit and who is fun to work with. We spend bigger part of our lives with people at work, so it´s important to me with who am I working.

Speaking of work, what is new at Lordship?

Few things made me happy recently and one of them was among the others really great - the opening the first CEE Hamleys store in one of our projects, what a great achievement and hard work of so many people at our team and the team of our customer.

I like two influential and inspiring mottos. I apply the first one mainly in my personal life: “The life is the same as a cookie. It smells and tastes according to what you add to it.” And the second one is more about the professional side of my life: “It does not matter what you do, but it matters how you do it”.


I like working with people who are professionals in their field, loyal, straightforward and positive.

What professional skills and personal qualities you value the most, what are the keys to success?

Successful corporations have high ethical standards, developed system of corporate values and corporate social responsibility is a part of their DNA. They expect their managers to be a role model for these values, put a high focus on their people and their own development. Collaboration and best practice sharing are highly encouraged. It is very important for each manager to make sure that his employees clearly understand how the company works, what is its strategy and how each individual can contribute. So, key to success are clear vision, experience and knowledge, positive energy and great people management skills.

I am a believer that professional behavior at all times and excellent results are going to bring you forward in your career. For management role, it is not enough to make one step ahead, but several steps at same time. The nature of work is requiring from us a high flexibility level – both in regards to number of hours we put at work and job location. I need to stress the importance of communication, and managers have to have empathy and appreciate good teams around them.

Apart from these personal and leadership skills and qualities, I would like to highlight one particular job skill whose importance has been growing over the past years – understanding of coding. As our society undergoes a rapid, digital transformation, computer science and coding are among the most important things today. Coding is a vital 21st century skill, I dare compare it to ability to speak English. It is expected that in the near future, most qualified jobs will require at least basic level of coding, not only in IT but across industries and functions.

I attend all sorts of events and I naturally choose them above all based on the agenda. The most interesting for me are IT and finance committees, where we have been recently discussing topics like the new data protection framework, trends in cloud-based solutions or using e-signatures for business. I appreciate that advisers and management from leading firms can discuss the hot issues they are dealing with and how we see the trends. But there is one very special event that I really like even if it has nothing in common with law: Awards Ceremony of the Best Cooperation of the Year. It‘s absolutely amazing to see how academics and geeks from universities can cooperate with the big corporations and see their inventions.


I really appreciate participation in the expert groups and the possibility to comment on legislation or regulatory practice, for instance, through position papers of the AmCham Expert Group for Insolvency Proceedings or participation in the Roundtable with the President of the Office for Personal Data Protection Ivana Janu. I would suggest further expansion of AmCham activities in this direction.


I am a bookworm, but I rarely read anything directly related to how I work. David Allen‘s Getting Things Done is a notable exception. The most influential book in my life might be The Brothers Karamazov or maybe The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter. As entertainment, I really like the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. As a sports fan, I recently read an absolutely incredible book about running called Feet in the Clouds by Richard Askwith.


It‘s easy to list the typical qualities of good lawyers like diligence, expertise and a practical and business-oriented approached. To succeed in our extremely competitive sector, you really need to be ambitious and work hard. But as these traditional virtues can easily make your working day with others nearly unbearable, I would say that the key qualities are a sense of humor and friendliness. I am grateful that my colleagues have these qualities in spades.


DELTA legal is a very young firm, so we appreciate that independent legal rankings have already taken note of us and recommended us. Legal advice is becoming more and more commoditized so we would like to focus on more tailor-made products. We are just now launching a new product focused on prevention to help our clients identify actual legal risks before they materialize.

Supporting the creativity of teachers in their classroom´s everyday life through talks, seminars and especially various artistic activities.

HESTIA – National Volunteer Center: Let´s enter the new dimension of volunteering!

Combining existing online platforms for volunteering - Dobrovolnik.cz, Database.dobrovolnik.cz and Volunteer.cz and creating one website which will combine the strengths of all three. Inspired by New York Cares online platform Do-it.org. Aim is to create the space for inspiration in volunteering action, and the space where citizens can be easily involved in voluntary activities.

About One World, Many Voices

One World, Many Voices program aims to encourage people to become active citizens. AmCham directs its interest on building long-term partnership of projects prepared in cooperation of schools, municipal authorities, local communities and representatives of our member companies.

AmCham donates money to young students who would like to accomplish various projects that are beneficial for development of communities and towns they live in, linking with community leadership. It is a great opportunity for pupils to use their knowledge and skills and learn how to think, plan, communicate and deliver. One World, Many Voices helps schools become a true community center of the town.

To allocate the finance each year AmCham raises money at the annual Thanksgiving Ball through Silent Auction which is supported by many sponsors and donors as well as by selling tickets for corporate tables. All proceeds raised are granted to local associations and schools to help make their communities better places to live and work.

Since its beginning in 2003, the project was focused on supporting language education at Czech schools. Until 2012 AmCham has supported 25 schools in 6 regions by equipment donation to language laboratories. In 2012 the project was accomodated and aimed to encourage people to become active citizens.

On June 16, the 24th General Assembly of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic was held at Kostel sv. Anny.

The General Assembly is the annual general meeting of AmCham members at which the election of the new Board of Directors is confirmed and the Executive Director reports on the past year.

This year the membership elected 8 members from 10 candidates.

We would like to thank all of these business leaders for dedicating their time and efforts to the AmCham, and to congratulate each of them for producing the high levels of voting for this year´s board of directors.

AmCham enters its 25th year of Operations with a larger number of advocacy and networking projects than in any year previously.

We believe strongly that the business community must act today to ensure success tomorrow, and we are proud to have played a role in all of our community´s accomplishments of the past year.

We look forward to driving our common agenda forward in 2016-2017.
