2013–2014 ANNUAL REPORT

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

This past year has been a strong one forAthletics NSW (ANSW). Our registrationscontinue to grow with more than 6,500athletes enjoying our sport on the track,in the field or on the road. We havehosted several very successful nationalevents, culminating in the 2014 SydneyTrack Classic and the 2014 AustralianJunior National Athletics Championshipsheld in March at the Sydney OlympicPark Athletic Centre (SOPAC).

It is pleasing to report that for the 2013-2014 year, Athletics NSW delivered a packed winter and summerseason of events, as well as again reporting a profit. Our key events forthe year were well attended, attracted good support from sponsorsand very importantly, had fine weather.

The finances of Athletics NSW remain stable and a good cash positionhas been maintained to ensure the long-term viability of ouroperations. The current office accommodation is bursting at the seamsand we have been working with Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA)to identify how the space available to our organisation could beincreased. This will be an ongoing physical constraint, which the ANSWBoard and management will work to manage.

At last year’s Annual General Meeting new by-laws were adopted andthe constitution amended which has modernised the governance ofANSW. I thank Brian White, Jörg Probst, Michael O’Mara and ourprevious Chair, Gordon Windeyer for their tireless efforts in this veryimportant area. The ANSW Board has also developed a new strategicplan that is aligned with that of Athletics Australia. You will find thedetails on the ANSW website. The key areas of focus are:

• Participation• High Performance• Competition• Commercial

The strategic plan is very focussed and will guide the organisation overthe next three years as we implement plans for growing the sport, ensure our athletes achieve at the highest level, provide vibrantcompetitions, and develop financial sustainability, so that we can domore for our member clubs and registered athletes, officials andcoaches.

The past year saw ANSW build on the success of growing membershipwith continued focus on delivering attractive participation events, aswell as school level participation events such as the Buffalo Sports 2013NSW All Schools Track and Field Championships. The communityathlete category continues to grow as more people find this aligns wellwith their involvement in the sport. An identified challenge is toengage more with this important group.

The 2014 NSW Open, U23 and AWD Championships were outstanding. There were many Commonwealth Games and World Junior

Championship qualifying performances, not to mention the recordsproduced by our Para-Athletes. The conditions were sometimesdifficult, however it was good preparation for athletes travelling to theGlasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the IAAF World JuniorChampionships in Oregon, USA later this year.

Once again our showpiece events, the Sydney Track Classic (STC) andHunter Track Classic (HTC) were outstanding. Both events attractedvery good crowds. The HTC truly captured and involved the crowd. There was also excellent support provided by local businesses. A hugethank you to the ‘Friends of The Hunter Track Classic’ who betweenthem, secured most of the event partners, with several also personallysponsoring the event.

The 2014 STC proved to be a great success with an excellent crowd,top-notch international stars and sensational performances by ourlocal athletes. Well done to everyone involved – officials, athletes, spectators and organisers. We also acknowledge the support providedby our sponsors, in particular, the Sydney Olympic Park Authority andDestination NSW.

Our NSW athletes registered some outstanding performances at the2014 Australian Athletics Championships in Melbourne. Twenty-nineNSW athletes have now been selected to represent Australia at theGlasgow Commonwealth Games. Congratulations to all of thoseathletes. No doubt you will do us proud.

At the beginning of the 2014 Summer Season, ANSW decided to nameour summer competition after the late (and great) John Treloar AM.John remains the only Australian male athlete to have reached anOlympic 100 metre final. At the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Johnran in the closest race in Olympic history and missed gold by a meretenth of a second. This final is widely regarded the greatest ever OlympicMen’s 100 metre final. John was also a dedicated administrator of thesport over many years. It was wonderful to share the opening round ofthe inaugural Treloar Shield in October with John’s family at SOPAC.

As you know, the proposed merger between Athletics Australia andLittle Athletics Australia did not progress. Nonetheless, at a NSW levelwe continue to work closely with our counterparts in Little Athletics. We hope this will lead to improvements in the events that we provideand ensure that young athletes are introduced to the sport in a positiveway and continue to participate over the years.

To further these objectives the ANSW Board has formed a joint workingparty with Little Athletics NSW to continue the collaboration betweenthe two arms of the sport. It is imperative that we work together toachieve our mutual aims for the sport of athletics, especially aroundsharing resources, officials, standardisation and attracting funding.

The popularity and success of Little Athletics continues to be thebenchmark for all junior sports. It provides a fantastic start in our sportas ultimately junior athletics feeds into senior competitions and thefuture of our elite programs. Working cooperatively is good for bothlevels of the sport of athletics.

We are very fortunate that in NSW up to 40% of athletes across bothgroups are members of clubs or centres that are affiliated with bothstate bodies. In the key teenage groups this figure rises to almost 60%.Both state bodies share resources such as development officers, officials and coaches. In most country areas Little Athletics and seniorclubs are one and the same.

ANSW has a clear strategic direction that parallels the nationaldirection. Our direction reflects the realities of our sport, its challengesand aims. Over the coming years we will endeavour to deliver on thoseobjectives so that our member clubs and their athletes achieve successin all areas of athletics.

ANSW will continue to strive to offer strong and vibrant competitions, broaden the participation in athletics through innovative events, support all athletes to reach their potential, provide leadership toclubs, coaches and officials.

Despite reduced funding from national organisations, the ANSW Boardhas continued striving to achieve the objectives and deliver coreactivities contained in the strategic plan. One way in which ANSWintends to increase revenue is through the development of recreationalrunning activities across the state.

In addition, our commitment is to expand the presence of developmentofficers where we can, grow participation and keep the finances in goodshape. As I have flagged in the past, we continue to look at opportunitiesto invest in athletics in NSW. Importantly, we have been working withgovernment at local and state level to protect athletic facilities.

In order to improve the governance and performance of the ANSWBoard, most of the directors have now attended the Foundations ofDirectorship Course conducted by the Australian Institute of CompanyDirectors and supported by NSW Sport and Recreation. The ANSW Boardalso has risk, finance and audit, and remuneration and nomination sub-committees working to support the various compliance issues.

The ANSW Board continues to maintain a vision to grow the sport ofathletics. This means greater participation and more registrations. Weface a challenging funding environment, where it has becomeincreasingly difficult to secure funds from government and sponsors inwhat is a very competitive and tight market. Critical to attractingsponsorship remains increased participation.

To all member clubs, registered athletes and officials, I ask thatthroughout your athletic endeavours, you try and encourage morepeople to become involved in athletics. Consider ways in which youcan grow our sport and ensure athletes are welcomed and encouragedto return each year.

Finally, I must express my gratitude to Greg Meagher and his team, theother board members and most importantly the many volunteers andofficials who make our sport so enjoyable and successful. Keep doingwhat you are doing.

Sean ScanlonChairman

Thefocus has been on growing themembership base and offering a rangeof new events and programs, whichprovide tangible benefits to membersand the organisation in terms ofrevenue and increased brandawareness.

ANSW hosted a number of major competitions during 2013 and it ispleasing to note that competitor and spectator numbers grewsignificantly for all these events. New events and programs such as theANSW Super Clinics and regional fun runs in Armidale and Parkes werealso offered and were very well supported.

At a development level, the performance of the NSW Team at the 2013 Australian All Schools Championships held in Townsville inDecember was a highlight. NSW won both the points and medal tally, with five athletes recording World Junior qualifying performances andthree athletes setting national records.

A number of Australia’s elite and upcoming athletes, including manyNSW athletes, achieved Commonwealth Games A and B and WorldJunior Championship qualifying performances at ANSW hosted events.

Matt is also a volunteer coach and supervisor with the CentralCoast Academy of Sport and the Hunter Academy of Sport. Sincecommencing with ANSW in October 2013, Matt has significantlyincreased engagement with members and the athletics community bygenerating interesting and timely content across social mediaplatforms.

In November 2013, Youcef Abdi, three-time Commonwealth Gamesrepresentative (Manchester 2002 1500m Bronze Medal, Melbourne2006 and Delhi 2010) and dual Olympian in steeplechase (Beijing 2008,London 2012), commenced as ANSW’s Greater Western SydneyDevelopment Officer. In this jointly funded role with Little AthleticsNSW, Youcef’s primary focus is growing dual registration while alsoexpanding the current clinic program, enhancing participation andfacilitating the transition of athletes from a Little Athletics Centre to anassociated ANSW senior club.

MEMBERSHIPIt is pleasing to report that ANSW membership continues to grow.Membership numbers have increased 11 per cent this year, with thenumber of members now exceeding 6,500. Membership growth is ontrack to achieve a forecasted 8,000 by the start of the 2014 summerseason. The Community Athlete category continues to be a driver ofmembership growth, with numbers increasing from 1,100 to over2,400 in the last 12 months. While our retention rates are overall verypositive, junior age groups continue to experience the highestturnover and we are looking at ways to address this situation.

INITIATIVES• ANSW 2013-2016 Strategic PlanANSW’s purpose is to foster the appreciation, enjoyment and development of athletics in NSW. With this stated purpose in mind, the ANSW 2013-2016 Strategic Plan has been developed and willprovide the framework for ANSW operations for the coming years. It was held over eight weeks and started on 19 October 2013.The opening round was held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centreand was attended by John Treloar’s son, John Treloar (Jnr). The athleticscommunity has positively embraced the revamped competition withan increase in participation of 25% when compared with the 2012 ClubPremiership.

The second club competition for the year was the SummerPremiership. This was conducted over four rounds of competition andincluded the NSW State Relay Champs, NSW Multi EventsChampionships, a revamped two day NSW Club Championships, andthe NSW Track and Field Championships.

On May 19, 325 athletes took part in the first Parkes Rotary Fun Run.Feedback from the Parkes Rotary Club was very positive and we areconfident that the event will become even more popular in future years.

• 2014 NSW Junior Athletics ChampionshipsFollowing on from previous years, ANSW again saw steady growth inparticipation at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships (NSWJAC),with more than 1,000 athletes competing. Such growth is attributed toimproved and appropriately targeted marketing and communications, greater awareness of the pathways to the Australian Junior AthleticsChampionships (AJAC), the staging of the AJAC in Sydney, betteralignment with LANSW and ANSW calendars in relation to regionalchampionships and steady growth in dual registrations withapproximately 50% of competitors in the NSWJAC now dual athletes.

MEMBERSHIP AND CLUBS

REGISTRATION The total registration number in the 2013-2014 season, which ends on30 September, currently stands at 6,766. The breakdown ismetropolitan club numbers 4,758 and country club numbers 2,008both increasing from 3,893 and 1,669 respectively. The total number ofofficials has remained at 207. This includes an increase of AthleticsAustralia technical officials from 121 to 138 as well as 69 club officials. In addition, there are a number of technical officials who are registeredas life members, athletes or coaches.

Athletics NSW also welcomed two new clubs from theHunter/Newcastle region; Adamstown New Lambton and NewcastleRunners Inc. Both clubs have a very strong initial membership baseand look like they will thrive well into the future.

DUAL REGISTRATIONThe dual registration category remained strong with a total of 1,528athletes. Joint programs between ANSW and Little Athletics NSW suchas the JETS (Junior Encouragement and Talent Squad) continue tofacilitate the transition from Little Athletics competition to seniorathletics. This is evident when we look at the growth of under 18athletes from 619 to 685 and under 20 athletes from 311 to 356. This isproving that the dual athlete registration is continuing to provide aseamless pathway from junior athletics to senior ranks.

COMMUNITY ATHLETE The community athlete category continues to go from strength tostrength, this year reaching 2,417 members compared to last year, which was 1,188. The community athlete is a way in which ANSW canbreak into the ever increasing and lucrative recreational runningmarket. By capturing these athletes, ANSW has been able to promoteits events directly and has had over 150 of these athletes progress tofull membership categories. It has also enabled ANSW to promote andencourage these members to compete in the Sydney:10, theFernleigh15, Goulburn and Parkes fun runs and other ANSW events.

UPDATE IN IMG SYSTEMIMG Sports Technology Group (IMGSTG) and Athletics Australia (AA)have signed a new multi-year technology partnership deal that will seeIMGSTG become the preferred centralised technology provider to thesport throughout Australia. This will greatly benefit ANSW and its clubs;as central to this new technology will be a new national centralisedmembership database, which will serve to underpin growth andadministration for the sport.

CLUB PROFILE REPORT/VISITThe inaugural club visit and profile was an initiative which began inApril 2013. Its purpose was to assist clubs self-assess and easily reviewwhere progress can be made to grow athletics at a grass roots level. The clubs visit/profile was a resounding success with ANSWdevelopment staff visiting 67 clubs throughout NSW and receiving 70club profiles. This process enabled clubs to then identify areas, whichneed development and provide ANSW with the insight into whereassistance can be directed. The Clubs Profile Report, finalised in

December 2013, summarised the information gathered from clubs, highlighting significant areas in which ANSW can provide bothmonetary and administrational support, such as sponsorship andmarketing, administration support, coaching, tools for recruitment, and event management.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT GOAL FOR 2014-2015With the information received from the clubs profile, the next phasewill be tailored towards delivering the already mentioned targetedareas on a regional/metropolitan visit scheme under the banner, ‘ANSWClubs Road Show’. The initiative aims to deliver these objectives to allour clubs in NSW; holding clinics in most regions of NSW. It is evidentthat it is not sustainable for ANSW to provide all athletics clubs in NSWwith the resources they need. However, it can use its expertise toprovide clubs with the ability to become strong, vibrant and self-sufficient. In turn this will continue to grow the sport of athletics inNSW through its clubs.

Throughout the series, athletes and clubs pursue points towards the annual Winter ClubTrophy, Winter Premiership, Distance Runner of the Year, and DistanceWalker of the Year. Bankstown Sports continued its dominance in theWinter Club Trophy by winning once again in 2013. The St George District Athletics Club hosted the 2013 NSW NoviceChampionships at Scarborough Park on 20 April. Unfortunately, thepoor weather in the lead up to, and on the day, of the NoviceChampionships contributed to a decline in participation comparedwith 2012.

The Athletics NSW signature event of the Winter Series is theSydney:10, which incorporates the NSW Road Running Championshipsand was held on 4 May. In 2013, the Sydney:10 was also supported bythe Sydney Striders as it was included as part of their 10km series. Theinclusive model of the Sydney:10 promotes attendance of AthleticsNSW members, Little Athletics members, as well as general membersof the fun run community. The total number of participants in 2013was 1,034. This was a significant increase compared to the 807participants in 2012.

The Illawong Athletic Club hosted the NSW Cross Country RelayChampionships at Miranda Park on 1 June. On 22 June, the Nowra Athletics Club hosted the NSW Cross CountryChampionships on the Willandra course. Participation in 2013 rose byalmost 20% compared to 2012. It is difficult to deny the correlationbetween the growth rate and the recent course modifications, whichincludes the removal of a daunting hill.

The Mingara Athletics Club hosted the 2013 NSW Road RelayChampionships in Ourimbah on 13 July. The distance for femalerunners 45 years and older and male runners 55 years and older wasrestored to 4km in 2013. The participation numbers increased by morethan 10% compared to 2012. Considering all the age group and eventsoffered, the top performing clubs were Bankstown Sports, SydneyStriders and Kembla Joggers.

Three Walks Championships are included in the Winter Series, the TeamWalks, Short Walks, and Long Walks. The Team Walks on 26 May andLong Walks on 28 July were held at Narellan and were hosted by theRegal Racewalkers. Participation numbers increased slightly at theTeam Walks and were similar at the Long Walks. The Short Walks, 16June, were held at Tench Reserve, Jamisontown and were hosted bythe NSW Racewalking Club. Participation numbers for the Short Walkswere slightly down on 2012.

SUMMER 2013-2014Athletics NSW prides itself on providing quality competitions forathletes of all ages, abilities, and aspirations.

Buffalo Sports NSW All Schools, 10-13 October 2013One of the most popular events in the Athletics NSW calendar is theNSW All Schools Championships. Participation at the NSW All Schoolswas impressive with approximately 1,400 secondary school athletesconverging on the 2013 event. It was once again, easily the largestschools athletics meet in Australia.

The Kings Sports Store Treloar ShieldIn the 2013-2014 season, the Treloar Shield replaced the ClubPremiership and was named in honour of the great NSW track and fieldathlete, John Treloar. The aim was to provide an age group basedcompetition encouraging participation as well as encouraging highperformance.

The major changes to the pre-Christmas competition included the useof only the premier athletic facilities in and around Sydney, the removalof using multiple venues during a single competition round, optimising the use of online entry and the refreshment of the pointscoring system.

One measure for the success of the inaugural Treloar Shield was thegrowth in participation of 25% when compared with participationfigures of the 2012 Club Premiership.

Another measure of success is the number of quality performancesrecorded, including athletes achieving qualifying standards forCommonwealth Games and the World Junior Championships.

While it had been anticipated that participationnumbers might decrease, the number of entries was on par with the2013 event, which was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic

Conditions were near perfect with anumber of outstanding performances including one National MastersAssociation record and no fewer than ten NSW Masters Associationrecords. The ANSW Masters Championships was once again wellsupported by the NSW Masters Association with special thanks to JanetNaylon, Stuart Paterson, Lynette Smith, Gavin Murray and StuartGyngell.

2013–2014 ANNUAL REPORT

OFFICIALS

At least 100 of ANSW’s registered officials regularly attend AthleticsNSW competitions. The dedication and expertise of these officials ishighly regarded and valued. The team is comprised of a diverse groupof people, including highly qualified officials, brand new officials andthose who still compete. Every official is vital in the delivery ofcompetitions in the summer and winter seasons.

The Officials Advisory Panel (OAP), as listed on page 2, represents theofficials. The aim of the panel is to facilitate the recruitment andretention of officials, adoption of new technology and the quality ofmeet presentation.

To focus on the continuing development of officials in NSW, the OAPformed an Education Sub-Committee to develop a regular schedule ofexams and seminars for new and existing officials. A survey was sentout to all members so that the committee could identify the biggestneeds of clubs and officials. With a low response rate, this survey will berevised and sent out again. The sub-committee has been committed toorganising regular seminars on the various specialties of officiating atdifferent venues in NSW. This is all done with a vision to increase thenumber of officials and to improve the quality of officiating.

Over the course of the 2013-2014 season, 60 officials attempted C Levelexams, 16 sat B Level exams and two officials attempted A LevelAccreditation. Congratulations to those who received theiraccreditation, and a special welcome to those who have achieved thisfor the first time.

The OAP also appointed a new appointments sub-committee whooversee the appointment of all officials to NSW summer and wintercompetitions, in addition to school carnivals. The committee helps toensure the quality of officiating at all meets as well as giving new andupcoming officials opportunities to gain more experience at higherlevels.

In recognition of the effort and dedication of NSW officials, AthleticsNSW has a reward scheme based on the number of competitions anofficial has attended. The scheme involves three levels, of which thepinnacle level is awarded to those who have officiated at over 25competitions. Congratulations to the following officials who havereached that level: Don Allen, Richard Batterley, Paul Buckley, IvanDelaney, Julie Dredge, Murray Gaudin, Ann Grimm, Dave Higgins, PeterHiggins, Rob Jones, Allan Kay, Graham Kearns, Terry Manns, BettyMoore, Janet Munro, John Munro, Susan Newton, Liz Radley, JeanetteRichter, Ron Richter, John Smith, Lynette Smith, Tony Smyth, Stan Stark,Sue Stephens, Del Warrick, Bronwyn Webb.

On behalf of the athletes, coaches, spectators, ANSW Board of Directorsand staff, all officials are thanked for the ongoing contribution to thesport of athletics. We hope to see you all again next season.

Whilst continuing to service the core business of our sport with qualityevents and carnivals, the 2013-2014 season saw the development teambranch out into holiday clinics and Para Athlete classification. Thesuccess of both shows a willingness of those outside the club systemto become involved in our sport, and the challenge now exists to keepthem engaged.

With greater participation numbers comes a greater sense ofcommunity and friendship, which is quite often an over-lookedmotivating force in sports participation. The development team hopesto build on the increased exposure the Commonwealth Games brings, whilst at the same time acknowledging that there are multipleindividual factors affecting the development of athletics and this inturn will affect our participation numbers.

DUAL REGISTRATIONWhilst the national bodies struggle to bring the sport together, at leastin the minds of the 1586 Dual Athletes who have so far signed on thisseason, the sport is viewed as a single entity. Whilst dual registrationremained steady, it was pleasing to see a variety of dual registeredchildren competing at ANSW events, including the Little Athletics JETSgroup who, for the first time, made dual registration mandatory. Thanksare extended to Darren Wensor, Cheryl Webb and Chantelle Grills atLittle Athletics NSW who have helped facilitate this process.

COACH EDUCATIONCoach education has resulted in an increase from 991 accreditedcoaches to 1172. This represents significant growth across all levels andbodes well for the future. It’s pleasing to see that the Level 1 BeginningCoach accreditation is being adopted by both Little Athletics andsenior athletics coaches and is implemented at schools, clubs andtraining groups. The challenge now lies with ensuring that theseaccredited coaches use their knowledge to assist at their local clubs.

COACHING CLINICSANSW hosted a range of school holiday coaching clinics for athletesaged between 12-19 years of age. This is a new activity for theDevelopment team and has proved popular with participants. Theseclinics, coordinated by Development Officer Lisa Corrigan, covered arange of athletics disciplines, including throws, jumps, short and longsprints, middle distance and steeplechase, walks, and cross country.

Clinics have been held in Sydney, Wollongong and the Central Coast, and will continue across NSW regions in school holiday time.

Through use of elite athletes as coaches and role models such as DaniSamuels, Andrew Murphy, Tim Leathart, Youcef Abdi and of course ourown Lisa Corrigan, developing athletes are provided with a uniqueopportunity not typically afforded them as well as a glimpse into theworld of elite athletics.

Additional clinics will be held for school groups in the coming monthsas ANSW seeks to expand its coaching role into school athletics.

PARA ATHLETICSAs of 2013, ANSW is now responsible for the running of Para Athleticsclassification. Lisa Corrigan coordinates the Para athletics program andruns three classification opportunities each year in NSW.

ANSW held five ‘come and try’ days for Para athletes in Ballina, Bathurst,Campbelltown, Newcastle and Nowra. The aim for these days was toprovide a platform for potential Para athletes to give athletics a go, withmany signing up with a club and continuing with the sport. AustralianParalympic Committee representative Kara Retford was in attendanceas well as Para coaches Matt Rawlings, Ron Rawlings, and JennieDuffield, and role models Stephanie Schweitzer and Christie Dawes.

SCHOOLS ATHLETICSSchool Alliance Scheme (SAS)In its second season of operation, the SAS remains an excellent tool forclubs to engage with school athletics squads. The SAS permits schoolsto sign whole school squads to a club, at a reduced rate to get accessto some summer and winter events. The SAS enables athletes whootherwise would not compete to come and sample our sport outsideof their traditional school season.

Schools Knockout Over 90 teams once again participated in the Schools Knockout andthe evening proved to be a great night of athletics. The team formatcertainly appeals to school groups and for some schools it is one of thefocal points of the year.

From the state event, seven schools went on to represent NSW at thenational final in Townsville with Trinity Grammar, Figtree High Schooland Pymble Ladies College all proving victorious in various divisions. This is the best result NSW schools have had in many years with theKnockout format and full credit goes to the schools’ coaches andadministrators.

School Relays120 school teams took up the relays challenge this year and the variedformats appear to be popular amongst school athletes.

All Schools Warm Up MeetsThese meets are designed to bridge the gap between the last of theschool meets in Term 3 and the NSW All Schools Championships.Approximately 400 athletes competed in the two events held.

NSW All Schools ChampionshipsNow residing in its timeslot of the first week of term four, the AllSchools proves yet again that it is the premier event of its kind inAustralia. Contrary to other sports, the NSW All Schools permitsathletes of all abilities to attend and experience athletics in a highperformance/high quality environment. The excellent attendance fromschool-based athletes serves as a poignant reminder that the currentthinking of “cutting” athletes from our sport at every level theyparticipate at, is flawed and needs to change.

From this event, a squad of 223 athletes, our largest to date in thecurrent format, was selected to attend the Australian All Schools held

for the first time in Townsville. Whilst the conditions proved difficultwith high temperatures and even higher levels of humidity, the NSWteam acquitted themselves well, once again taking out the Nationaltitle with a convincing win over Queensland with Victoria third.

NSW AND AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPSThis year’s NSW Junior Championships saw steady growth with nearly1,000 athletes representing ANSW clubs. Seasoned campaigners werejoined by a number of new athletes and specific growth was seen inthe U14 age bracket. With the current numbers, ANSW includescompetition in every age group, rather than two-year age groups, aswell as a program for Para athletes. This sees the carnival extended toa full three days.

From the NSW Championships, 623 athletes went on to represent NSWat the Australian Junior Championships, which this year, were held inSydney. Serving not only as the Australian Championships, but also theselection trials for the IAAF World Junior Championships (U20 events)and the Youth Olympic Games (U18 events) meant we saw many highlevel performances achieved. More importantly though, is thatparticipation for the event was an incredible 2,100 athletes. This is veryimpressive and shows that the direction that AA has taken with juniorathletics is the right one.

NEW CLUBSTwo new clubs are welcomed to the ANSW family. Adamstown NewLambton is a large Little Athletics Centre that has for many years hada strong dual registration presence and numerous athletes in theNewcastle area have had their beginnings at the club. The newlyformed Newcastle Runners have at the core of their organisation adesire to introduce new people to the sport first and foremost throughfun running with an eye to transitioning them to cross country andtrack events in the future.

With a combined membership of over 140 athletes, they seem to beright on track in growing and promoting the sport.

FACILITY DEVELOPMENTProgress is being made at the Dubbo facility and it is on track to becompleted by October 2014. The facility will prove an excellentresource for athletes on the western side of the mountains and we alllook forward to its completion.

The Hunter Region program has now been operating for over fiveyears. The last 12 months saw initiatives in fun run events developfurther, whilst key activities like the Schools Knockout, Festival of SportCoaching Clinics and Hunter Track Classic continue to do well.

The strategic objectives for the Regional Coordinator continue torevolve around: 1. Increasing overall registrations and dual registration aged athletesacross both LA Centres and ANSW clubs

2. Providing support in establishing a sustainable winter and summercompetition

3. Working with local coaches in delivering the Little Athletics Programfor Schools across the region

4. Developing strategies and events, which engage the recreationalrunning community

2013 WINTER SERIES (MAY-JULY)The fifth running of this three-part Winter Athletics Series saw each ofthe competitions held at Glendale with one event acting as a pre-departure hit out for World Youth competitors. The Series is wellsupported by metropolitan and regional athletes who are looking toblow out the cobwebs over winter. Winter Series 3 also doubled as thetraditional Nib Games, which receives support from the HunterAcademy of Sport.

SCHOOLS KNOCKOUT (AUGUST)The schools knockout is a terrific tool that can be used to connect withsecondary schools and students. The third edition of the Hunter Roundin 2013 saw 29 teams from 12 schools and over 170 athletes compete. It has been pleasing to see the SKO model become part of therepresentative calendar as most schools have returned aftercompeting once. The Schools Knockout is the best opportunity forAthletics NSW to demonstrate a well-organised event for dual agedathletes in the Hunter.

COACHING CLINICSThere were six days of coaching clinics held in the region during 2013-2014.

• The Hunter Festival of Sport Clinic is part of a two-week multi sportfestival held in the July Holidays. This clinic was held over two days, thefirst day at Newcastle Athletic Field and the second day at Glendale. There were 90 athletes participating and 10 coaches employed.

• A new approach was undertaken for the October holiday clinic witha total of three days being offered. One day at Kurri Kurri with twocoaches attending and another two-day ‘super clinic’ hosted byCardiff Athletics Centre with five coaches involved and over 40children each day.

• The Hunter Track Classic Clinic expanded in its fourth year andreceived terrific support from participants and elite athletes includingTamsyn Manou. Just fewer than 100 athletes took part in the clinic. Many thanks to Darren Wensor from Little Athletics NSW, who didmuch of the work organising the clinic and who makes it part of thesuccessful JETS program.

BEIC OR GETTING STARTED COURSES (SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER) This course is a support service for Little Athletics Clubs and Centres. There was an increased number of course deliveries leading into the2013-2014 season. Courses were run at five centres - Dungog, WoyWoy, Cardiff, Kotara South and Thornton. On all occasions the coursewas received well and appears to be a good way for some Centres to‘train up’ new volunteers.

LAPS (FEBRUARY – JULY)Seven schools completed programs in 2013 with five coaches beingoffered casual employment. The LAPS (Little Athletics Program forSchools) continued to attract new schools with most of the coachesbeing university students.

SCHOOLS VISITS (JULY – SEPTEMBER)This is probably the most powerful recruitment tool that Little Athleticshas leading into each new season. After a very heavy school visit schedulein 2012 (on the back of the Olympics) it was noted that there were less LAcentres booking in School Visits for 2013. Centres visited were:

NSW ALL SCHOOLS MULTI AND HUNTER ALL SCHOOLSThis event aims to be a stepping-stone to the NSW All Schools and toANSW clubs in the Hunter. Overall, there were 148 athletes taking partwith 37 athletes completing the multi event and 111 athletes inindividual events. The multi event athlete participant numbers havebeen steady for the past four years. The move to the one-daypentathlon for 12-13 year old athletes appears to have been successfulwith an increase in those age groups compared to the previously heldtwo-day heptathlon.

ANSW CLUB VISITS The Regional Development Officer visited clubs within the Hunter, NewEngland and Mid North Coast regions of NSW from July to October. The visits created opportunities to meet club representatives and tohear of ways that ANSW can assist them to develop and grow.Coaching courses and the need to have relevant competitions andmembership structures were repeated themes from clubs visited.

ATHLETICS NSW FUN RUN SERIES After the success of the inaugural Fernleigh15 event in 2012, attentionwas given to developing further fun run events, particularly in regionalNSW. In 2013, the series included the inaugural Parkes Rotary Fun Runand Armidale Fun Run along with the second instalment of theFernleigh15, which in 2013 hosted the NSW 15km Road Championship.

Fernleigh15 This is a partnership event with local fun run and triathlon organiserPaul Humphreys. The event grew by 30%, attracting 1,170 entrants inits second year and this included seven wheelchair athletes. In 2013,the event incorporated the NSW 15km Road Championship, which waswon by Natalie Archer and Hugh Williams respectively.

Parkes Rotary Fun RunParkes is Scott Westcott’s hometown and he was able to get on boardwith the local Rotary Club’s push to establish a local fun run. Scott, supported by Lisa Corrigan, led the organisation and delivery of thefun run held on Sunday 19 May; it attracted 326 runners.

Armidale Fun RunThe inaugural Armidale Fun Run was sponsored by two localbusinesses, Roberts and Morrow Accountants and Kelly Solicitors, along with Sport UNE. The local council were superb in their support,as was Katie Kelly who developed the idea and worked tirelessly tomake it happen. The Armidale Athletics Club was a beneficiary of therun held on Sunday 3 November. 451 participants took part and theywere introduced to the local club with many then joining in regularArmidale Athletics Club activities over the 2013-2014 season.

THE HUNTER TRACK CLASSICThe fifth edition of the Hunter Track Classic was held on Saturday 19January with a pre-program on Friday 18 January at Newcastle AthleticField. This venture was successful as it drew over 150 competitors toNewcastle Athletic Field to contest the Hunter’s Fastest Kid, NewcastleGift and Twilight 2 Miler. Grandstand Sports Injury Clinic sponsored theFriday night activities. The downside of the Friday night was it had animpact on the number of spectators on Saturday night’s Hunter TrackClassic.

In its third year as a National Series event, the Hunter Track Classic waswell supported by local businesses thanks to the ‘Friends of the Hunter’team who sourced over $7,000 of sponsorship income. The success ofthe event can again be directly attributed to the level of local supportit receives; local business partners, widespread media coverage, officials and volunteer involvement, athletes, coaches, ANSW clubs andLittle Athletics Centres.

Probably the biggest initiative from the 2014 HTC was the commitmentto host a professionally developed live stream, which ultimately wentonto become the template for the remainder of the National Seriesand Australian Athletics Tour. Many thanks to the commitment fromDave Robertson, Silas Moss, Luke McCoy and Josh Mason for makingthis project a winner!

Further details of the Hunter Track Classic can be found in the SpecialEvents report.

2013–2014 ANNUAL REPORT

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY REGION

Through statistical review, it is evident that GWS plays an importantrole within the greater NSW community of track and field growth. Tocapitalise on the engagement of the community and continue to drivegreater growth and better outcomes for all participating bodies, amore robust strategic planning model may be required.

The key strategic objectives for GWS;

1. Promote, co-ordinate and facilitate the transition/transfer of athletesfrom a Little Athletics Centre to an associated ANSW senior club.

2. Provide elite competition and develop strategies/opportunities forathlete progression through events specifically targeted to engagewith the athletics community.

3. Expand the current clinic program and enhance participationthrough the engagement of elite athletes acting in the role ofmentor/coach to young athletes.

COMPETITION

GWS Summer Series As Blacktown Athletics Centre was not available, a permit meet wasintroduced at Bankstown to cater for both LANSW and ANSW athletes, providing benefits to all stakeholders, and most certainly, bridging theapparent gap between junior and senior meets. The opportunity foryoung athletes to sample senior meet conditions was a paramountachievement amidst other deliverable outcomes on the evening.

The focus of the competition

1. To promote the transition from Little Athletics to senior athletics.

2. To provide junior and senior athletes with a positive environmentand conditions to achieve current qualifying standards.

3. To promote athletics with the proposed incorporation of a carnivalevent for future occasions, in an effort to engage with the broadercommunity.

The outcomes

The Meet was a notable success with great performances across theboard;

• Five World Junior Qualifiers

• Two Commonwealth Games Qualifiers

• Multiple National Qualifiers, Personal Bests and Seasons Bests

Ongoing strategy

• Identify key areas recording either strong existing participationrates and/or in contrast, key regions that are underdeveloped.

• Design an event program to identify and target selected areas, developing strategic objectives and auditable outcomes.

• Identify essential locations currently hosting events across thebroader community. Examine the potential and opportunity tointegrate a premier athletic meet into the exiting event/festival.

• Develop joint venture initiatives with commercial entities of eachcommunity to self-fund each event. This would be with the greater

goal in mind to run a successful and efficient revenue-attainingevent, with funds directed back into grass roots developmentand/or athletic funding for world representatives that have comefrom within the structures.

COACHING CLINICS The GWS OLYMPUS Clinic was held at Bankstown on Sunday, 2February 2014, and the GWS ATHLETISMA Clinic at Glenwood onSunday, 9 March 2014. Both Clinics targeted 12-17 year old athletes, employing the services of eight coaches, and were attended by morethan 50 athletes.

ANSW and LANSW will be joining forces for the first time to host a jointclinic during the Easter holidays. At the time of writing, approximately100 athletes had registered to attend and 10 coaches have beenengaged. Within this new initiative, our focus is to utilise elite andOlympic athletes as guest coaches, with the design to inspire athletesthrough instruction by champion athletes. Through showcasing eliteathletes who have come through the Little Athletics framework, wehope to highlight the real possibilities of representing Australia at thehighest level through this strategic progression.

COACHING COURSEThe GWS Development Officer, working directly with both SEAL andNSWIS, organised a Level 1 coaching course on Sunday, 12 January2014 at Bankstown.

The objective to increase the number of existing accredited coacheswas realised in a large part due to NSWIS generously agreeing to fundthe elite athletes to complete the course. This coupled with directaccess to pre-selected candidates of interest, resulted in a creditableoutcome from the venture in establishing 16 new coaches.

ATHLETICS WORKING WITH OTHER SPORTSGWS GIANTS and GWS Athletics initiated a relationship and startedworking together with a mutual outlook where both sports were tobenefit from cross promotion and engagement with each other. Therelationship, while in its infancy, provides the potential for multifacetedpositive outcomes, and with clear outcomes defined, implementedand monitored, the potential for cross sport ventures is an excitingconcept to explore. This will remain on an agenda for future scope.

TARGET TALENT PROGRAM

The ANSW Target Talent Program (TTP) continues to set the standardof youth talent development for the country. Having concluded itssecond intake, TTP athletes are now gracing the team lists of Australiansquads and we have our first graduate as well as two current membersin the Commonwealth Games team – congratulations Ella Nelson andcurrent TTP members Rae Anderson and Jodi Elkington. The resultsTTP athletes are achieving can be credited to the hard work and effortshown by personal coaches, the athletes and the collaborativeapproach taken by the TTP.

This year TTP athletes continued with the monthly training session atSOPAC. In some instances, athletes were taken off site for specialistsessions such as the middle distance group using Centennial Park on aSunday morning. Accompanying the physical training were educationsessions provided by a number of coaches and service providers.Athletes heard lectures and talks regarding the prevention of lower leginjuries, how to generate speed across all event groups, how to turnyour qualifying performance into a spot on a representative team anda presentation from ASADA. As well as this, we were happy to providefree entry to all TTP athletes at SOPAC for training as well as professionaldevelopment funding for personal coaches.

MARKETING

2013-2014 has seen significant progress in a number of importantareas such as brand, digital marketing and social media. All marketingstrategies and activities have been developed and implemented tosupport the key priority areas - the “Four Pillars” of the ANSW 2013-2016 Strategic Plan, namely Participation, High Performance,Competition and Commercial.

BRANDThroughout 2013-2014, the ANSW Marketing Team has providedsignificant marketing and communications support to ANSW eventsand programs. Event collateral has been produced for the Hunter TrackClassic, ANSW Be Coached By Champions Super Clinics, Para-athleticsCome ‘N’ Try and Classification Days, as well as other activities.

In July, ANSW launched the Treloar Shield and a new look ClubPremiership. In honour of John Treloar AM, who between 1947 and1952 was one of the fastest men in the world and is also considered tohave been one of Australia’s greatest sprinters, the Club Premiershipwas renamed the Treloar Shield. The ANSW Marketing Teamestablished the brand identity of the Treloar Shield and throughvarious channels communicated the name and details of therevamped Club Premiership to members and the NSW athleticscommunity.

For the 2013 Buffalo Sports NSW All Schools Track and FieldChampionships, 2014 Hunter Track Classic and 2014 Sydney TrackClassic, a Communications Plan, sponsor reads and news articles weregenerated and rolled out.

The ANSW Marketing Team also provided marketing support to eventssuch as the 2013 Fernleigh15 and the inaugural 2013 Roberts &Morrow Armidale Fun Run.

Intelligent and innovative use of social media greatly assisted inincreasing brand awareness among ANSW members and non-members and the wider community. The amount of relevant andtimely content on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram increasedsubstantially throughout the year and resulted in noticeable increasesin engagement levels.

ANSW WEBSITEThe ANSW website is the number one source of information formembers and as such it is critical that users are able to quickly andeasily find the information they are seeking.

In early 2013, a rigorous review was undertaken of the ANSW websiteand the needs of members. In June 2013, a refreshed and moresophisticated ANSW website went live. Content is regularly updatedand traffic statistics indicate that the refreshed site has been wellreceived and is frequently used by members and the wider athleticscommunity.

Monthly statistics indicate that the number of unique visitors, visits, page views and new visitors continue to increase each month, with thepercentage of new visitors to the site averaging 25%. Traffic on the sitepeaked in October 2013 with over 19,000 unique visitors. October is

traditionally a high traffic month, with the start of the Summer Seasonand the staging by ANSW of number of major competitions such asthe Buffalo Sports All School Track and Field Championships.

SOCIAL MEDIAActivity on ANSW social media services and pages continues toexperience significant growth. The volume of informationcommunicated via social media and the subsequent increase inpositive engagement with members has been very noticeable.

In terms of Facebook, monthly average Likes have increased fromaround 2,500 in April 2013 to nearly 4,000 by April 2014. The ANSWFacebook page hit a milestone of 4,500 Likes in March 2014.

Instagram has also experienced significant growth with over 1,150followers (up from 400 in October 2013). The average likes per post arenow over 170 compared with less than 40 in October 2013.

The ANSW YouTube channel has over 270 subscribers. ANSW YouTubevideos had over 58,000 views during the year, with nearly 131,000minutes of videos watched. The uploading of athlete profile videos, race videos and post-race interviews on YouTube with links toFacebook and Twitter continues to be very popular with members.Videos uploaded to the ANSW YouTube channel are consistentlyreceiving over 500 views, for example a pre-2014 Sydney Track Classicinterview with David Oliver and Joel Brown has been viewed by 583people, while highlight videos from NSW Junior Championships andAustralian All Schools Championships had over 800 views.

The number of Twitter followers has increased by around 40 percent -from 974 to over 1,400.

DIGITAL STRATEGY2013-2014 saw a renewed emphasis by ANSW on maximising thepotential benefits that can be gained through the use and integrationof digital and social media platforms. A key objective was tosignificantly build an engaged online fan base and ultimately, convertthis fan base to growth in ANSW membership and participation levels.Through strategies and activities implemented, engagement levelshave substantially increased. Social media has effectively been used todrive users to the ANSW website.

For the first time, the Hunter Track Classic and Sydney Track Classic, which were held in January and March 2014 respectively, wereprofessionally live streamed and available for viewing through theANSW YouTube channel. The response was very positive. For example, there were over 5,600 views of the Hunter track Classic by people bothin Australia and around the world. This number and reach clearlydemonstrates the power and importance of such digital activities tobuild engagement with ANSW members and the wider community.

COMMERCIAL ANSW is committed to sourcing and securing additional revenuestreams including corporate partnerships, merchandise sales andgovernment funding.

After a torrential thunderstormwhich threatened to prevent the meet from going ahead, the skiescleared in time for the 5,000 strong crowd to witness some excellentracing on the track, as well as outstanding Commonwealth Gamesqualifying performances in the field.

The meet featured Australia’s best track and field talent as a well as ahost of international stars, including several current Olympic and WorldChampions.

Highlights of the night included Sally Pearson (QLD), who had recentlytouched down from Poland where she had won silver in the Women’s60m Hurdles at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, winning boththe Women’s 100m and 200m; and Dani Samuels in the Women’sDiscus throwing the Commonwealth Games A standard on fouroccasions in her six throw series.

In the Men’s 110m hurdles, World Champion David Oliver (USA)clocked a world leading time to edge out local talent Nick Hough(NSW) and Sam Baines (VIC).

The STC saw a number of breakthrough performances includingGeorgia Wassall (NSW) in the Women’s 800m who placed secondbehind the world champion Eunice Sum; and Para-athlete Chad Perriswho not only won the Men’s Ambulant 100m but also broke 11seconds for the first time.

The quality of local and international talent was on par if not betterthan any previous STC and was very much appreciated by athletes andspectators.

Marketing initiatives for the 2014 STC included a press call with SallyPearson and current World Champion David Oliver (USA) at DawesPoint (under the Sydney Harbour Bridge) on the day before the meet;advertising on Radio 2GB which included live reads by Ben Fordhamduring ‘Drive Time’ (3-6pm, Monday – Friday) and over 30 CommunityServices Announcements; Alan Jones interviewing athletes on hismorning show and the event being professionally live streamed.

A highlights package was aired by Channel 10 on the Sunday morningafter the meet and replayed several times during the week on ONE.

Tickets to the STC were available online through Ticketmaster and atthe gate. The demand for the Premium Grandstand seats was verystrong with the 300 available seats sold out by the Wednesday prior tothe meet.

In appreciation of the support, enthusiasm and contribution Clubsmake to the growth of athletics in New South Wales, ANSW hosted aVIP Function for Club Presidents. It was the first time such an event hasbeen held at a Sydney Track Classic and it was well very attended byClubs from across NSW.
