Greetings from Dress for Success Indianapolis! 2012 was another amazing year for our organization as we had the privilege of supporting over 1,500 women on their journeys to self-sufficiency. Every day, we witness transformations in the women we serve through our Suits for Success, Professional Women’s Group and Career

Development Center programs. Most face barriers that require long-term support, perseverance and essential career development tools to help them thrive in work and in life. As Anna, one of our PWG members shared, “Dress for Success has changed my life forever. I received not only a suit on my first visit, but compassion from the volunteers and staff. After the initial “suiting”, I became a PWG member. The first three monthsI attended PWG meetings and did not speak, I could not, paralyzed by fear of people not liking who I was without alcohol. A miraculous thing happened; my PWG sisters coaxed me out of my shell.”

Each year, our Suits for Success Program serves more women than the previous year, and 2012 was no exception. Ninety partnering agencies referred a total of 1,279 women to us for interview suiting appointments, and 307 women received work wear once they secured employment.

Our Professional Women’s Group (PWG) also experienced an increase in the in the number of women served. Ninety-two women attended at least one PWG meeting, up from 85 in 2011; 44 women joined PWG, up from 24 in 2011. Eleven women graduated from our 8-part financial literacy course, and 9 women graduated into Lifelong status.

In 2012, our Career Development Center provided nearly 3,000 hours of career development assistance to 336 clients, up from 311 in 2011. Thanks to foundation support, we were able to expand our Going Places Network by Walmart program from 3 cohorts to 4 and added a week long computer training class to enhance the GPN training. We continued to see phenomenal results with our graduates—more than 67% obtained employment by the end of the session!

Dress for Success Indianapolis was built on the shoulders of volunteers, and we could not have come this far without their dedication, passion and time. In 2012, more than 420 volunteers provided more than 5,100 hours of service to help forward the mission of Dress for Success Indianapolis. We are incredibly grateful for their gifts of time and expertise.

We believe a self-sufficient woman is an asset to herself, her family, our community and the world! Every day, it’s a privilege to witness transformations in the women we serve through our Suits for Success, Professional Women’s Group and Career Development Center programs. We can’t do it alone and thank each volunteer, donor and community partner for lending their time, talent and resources to help the women we serve thrive in work and in life.

Yours truly,

Barbara S. Ellsworth

Three programs exist with the primary goal of supporting the Dress for Success Indianapolis mission. Dress for Success Indianapolis has served over 9,200 women since 2000.

SUITS FOR SUCCESS: The Suits for Success program provides women with a complete outfit (suit, blouse, hosiery, shoes, purse and jewelry) for their interview, as well as workforce apparel once employment is obtained. All of the women who participate in the Suits for Success program are referred to Dress for Success Indianapolis through our partner referral agencies. The Suits for Success program served 1,279 women for interview suits in 2012 and 307 for work attire. Every woman served is assisted by her own volunteer Personal Shopper who not only helps her choose a great outfit, but also provides a priceless confidence boost by offering interview tips and guidance during her appointment. Suits for Success clients are reaching significant employment and independence milestones. We know the path ahead is still long, so we launched the Professional Women’s Group and the Career Development Center to assist them along the way.

PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S GROUP: Dress for Success Indianapolis began its Professional Women’s Group (PWG) in 2006. PWG has grown since then to include two levels of membership, two meetings per month, an annual personal financial literacy course, book discussion groups, community events, a volunteer project and other growth opportunities for members. In addition, 2012 offered PWG members the opportunity to access individual goal setting and tracking sessions with staff. The concept of PWG was developed by Dress for Success Worldwide in recognition of the fact that job retention is crucial to the achievement of self-sufficiency. PWG also operates with the knowledge that job retention is about more than just direct job skills. Financial stability and a grasp of life skills are also deeply entwined in a woman’s professional success. The PWG teams with the Suits for Success and Career Development Center programs to offer a continuum of resources for clients. Written and unwritten rules of the workplace, personal financial literacy, work/life balance and health/fitness are the foci of PWG. Knowledge of these concepts allows women to retain their jobs and advance in their careers. Members are Suits for Success clients who are now employed. PWG currently boasts more than 60 active members, and 92 women participated in PWG programming in 2012.

THE LAYERS OF SUCCESS, OUR PROGRAMS

WHAT WE BELIEVEWE BELIEVE THAT A SELF-SUFFICIENT WOMAN IS AN ASSET TO HERSELF, HER FAMILY, OUR COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER:Our Career Development Center, which opened in May 2009, includes a computer lab, individualized career support, resume assistance, mock interviews, skill-building workshops and pre-employment training. In 2012, we provided nearly 3,000 hours of career development assistance to over 300 women. The Career Development Center plays an integral role in supporting our mission by providing the job readiness skills, support and assistance needed for women in our community to be successful at reaching their goals of obtaining employment and growing their careers. In 2012, Dress for Success Indianapolis implemented a one-week computer training component to the Going Places Network by Walmart series through a partnership with Training, Inc. The Going Places Network by Walmart series helps unemployed and underemployed Dress for Success clients gain professional skills, accelerate their job search and build confidence through weekly training sessions, one-on-one career coaching and networking in a supportive environment. Through this five-week pre-employment workshop, 67% of the women participating obtained employment by the end of the session!

VOLUNTEERS - AT THE HEART OF OUR SUCCESSFrom the beginning, Dress for Success Indianapolis has succeeded due to the commitment and passion of our volunteers. In 2012, our organization and the women we serve benefitted from the efforts of over 400 volunteers and over 5,500 hours of volunteer time. We literally couldn’t provide our valuable services without their help. As we continue to expand, our needs grow as well. There are many ways for you to share your time and talents! DRESS FOR SUCCESS INDIANAPOLIS HELPED ME GAIN CONFIDENCE IN MYSELF. THEY GAVE ME GREAT INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND TAUGHT ME WORDS & SENTENCES THAT I CAN USE IN MY INTERVIEW. THEY TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE MORE PROFESSIONAL, BUT STILL BE MYSELF AT THE SAME TIME. THEY ALSO TAUGHT ME THAT IF I JUST BELIEVE IN MYSELF & LET SOME THINGS GO, THAT I CAN & WILL BE WHO I WANT TO BE. THEY SHOWED ME THAT I CAN SMILE EVEN IN THE MIDST OF A BAD DAY.”
