A Message from the President

I

JLWNews

t is impossible to open the paper or turn on the television without being bombarded with news regarding the economic downturn that our country is engulfed in. There is no doubt that we are facing economically challenging times

locally as well as globally. If you pay attention to any part of the information given by the various news outlets it is impossible not to worry about what this means for your family, your community and your League.

I know many of you have been personally affected by the tough economic climate in Wichita. Some of you may even be weighing the cost verses the benefit of continuing your membership in the League as you analyze your family’s budget. Please know that your community needs you and your League now more than ever! Wichita has been faced with challenging times before. During these times our community has banded together, focused on the future and risen from the chaos to be a stronger and more vibrant city. And your League is no exception – in fact, during the Great Depression Leagues across the country saw an increase in membership numbers!

As our current League year draws to a close we must be diligent in preparing our League for the future. We must truly understand the needs of our community and be poised to step in where we are needed. Our League’s involvement can be the difference between a much needed community resource ending or being able to continue its mission in our community.

I can assure you that your League’s financial foundation is strong. Many years of League leadership have guaranteed that with their foresight to establish our Community and Training funding pools as well ensuring healthy bank reserves. We all know resources are scarce but we must continue to raise funds for our community, however we must work smarter not harder. It’s time for us to be creative!

Your current board of Directors as well as a team of incoming 2009-2010 Board members have worked at great length to prepare the 2009-2010 budget taking into account the tough economic times. With this budget and the diligent use of funds I am confident that our League will continue to be at the forefront of positive change and impact in our community for many, many years to come.

In service,

Stephanie Brock

unior League of Wichita has worked with Envision this League year to expand the Eyes for

Others program, providing improved technology and a mobile classroom for use in schools.

The Eyes for Others program was recently featured on Fox Kansas news and KWCH news. The story by Alana Rocha explained the genesis of the program and focused on the participants in the program. Rocha attended a reading event held on a Saturday morning and interviewed several of the readers.

One reader stated that the visually impaired children were “just like” him, and should be able to enjoy reading just as much as he does. The second shared that Eyes for Others was exciting because of the connection kids share with other kids their own age.

While the program started with readers from Collegiate, the story ended by revealing the expansion in the near future to additional schools and mentioned the partnership between Envision and Junior League.

The project committee also kept busy with another event this spring. “Eyes for Others for a Day,” which was open to all Junior League members and their families, was April 4. Readers were asked to bring their favorite book or a book from the Eyes for Others Wish List to record and donate to the Eyes for Others library.

busy summer is coming but don’t let your calendar fill up without planning to attend this year’s Kids’ Zoobilee. The

family fun event of the summer will feature a performance of the wildly popular High School Musical 2 by Music Theatre of Wichita.

The 11th annual Kids’ Zoobilee will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6 at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Tickets are $15 when purchased in advance. Back by popular demand, we will again be offering a Fast Pass ticket for the event. For an additional $5, you will receive entrance to the event through the Zoo gift shop allowing quicker admittance. A limited number of fast passes will be sold and one fast pass per ticket is required.

All Junior League members were given four tickets at the March, April or May general meetings or via mail. These tickets are for members to buy, sell, donate or return. All money and/or tickets need to be returned to headquarters by May 30.

In addition to the High School Musical 2 performance, this year’s Kids’ Zoobilee includes an array of exciting new activities. The Paul Mitchell School will be offering updos and face painting, the Wichita State

Also, be sure you head over to the Zoo’s brand new Slawson Family Tiger Trek to welcome the tigers, red panda, and brow-antlered deer to their new home. Kids’ Zoobilee wouldn’t be the same event without the mainstay activities, including Home Depot Creation Station, inflatables and games. A variety of local restaurants will provide delicious food and Pepsi will offer drinks.

Volunteers from Junior League make it possible for Wichita families to experience an evening of laughter and delight. Please take the time to sign up to work a shift as volunteers are still needed for the event. Contact Susan Keene at [email protected] or log on to the JLW website to sign up to volunteer.

uilding Libraries, Changing Minds Committee’s final event at Holy Savior Catholic

Academy was a very special ceremony to bless and dedicate the new library. As you know, the BLCM grant provided for the creation of a brand new library including new books, furniture and technology.

It was incredible to see the amazing change that had taken place in this once empty room. New books lined the shelves. New computers sat on new desks and as Delia Barnett, Principal at Holy Savior, happily pointed out, all the chairs in the Library matched for the first time. Beautiful artwork which had been donated hung on the colorful walls of the library.

The evening began with pizza and cookies for all who attended. After the blessing by Fr. James Billinger, Pastor of Holy Savior Parish, Principal Barnett thanked all those who had contributed to the new library.

Holy Savior students, their parents and the staff showed their heartfelt appreciation to the League for the new library as well. The students gave Junior League liaison Audrey Hane, a large pile of handmade “Thank You” cards.

A long-awaited and requested improvement to Junior League Headquarters occurred during April.

A hollow metal door with an electric strike mechanism and card reader was installed at the “back door” along with a security system.

Over the years, we have had many League members and our staff express concern for the security of our staff,

everal JLW Sustainers and two brave husbands sampled fine wines and sumptuous hors d’oeuvres during a wine tasting

event March 10 at Chester’s Chophouse. The “back room” overlooking the

lake, fireplace burning, glistened with splendidly set tables for six. Jamie Stratton from Jacob’s Liquors introduced us to four fabulous wines that he had selected for our tasting as well as demonstrating how to taste and drink them.

In turn, Chef Bobby Lane of Chester’s explained the food pairings, served family style. The wines and their food pairings included an interesting and delicious salad of a mélange of greens with dried cranberries drizzled with a light vinaigrette served with a 2007 Los Cardos Rose of Malbec (Argentina); a 2007 Domaine Lafage Cote de Est

members and property at Headquarters. After a full review with several bids and ideas, Hollow Metal Door Company was chosen to provide the door and SecurityNow will provide the security system installation and monitoring.

The locks of all the doors (the new door plus the other three) will be changed as a security upgrade as well.

New key cards were handed out and members received an explanation of procedure at the April General Meeting.

Both companies have been great to work with and understand the needs of our fluid use of the building. Your cooperation is appreciated as we work out the kinks in the system and please let Kara know if there are issues so that we can have them taken care of as soon as possible. This system will add to the long term value of our headquarters and provide a safe and security environment for League business, meetings, and rentals.
