1 Introduction

This annual report of the Universiteit Leiden Centre for Linguistics (ULCL) covers the period 1 January 2002-1 January 2003. ULCL was established on 1 March, 2001, as a research institute at the Faculty of Arts, Universiteit Leiden. ULCL is divided into three theme groups: 1. Language Faculty (or: Language System).

Coordinators: Prof. dr. J.E.C.V. Rooryck and Prof. dr. J.G. Kooij. 2. Language Use.

Coordinators: Prof. dr. A. Verhagen and Dr. J.A. Lalleman. 3. Language Diversity and Variation.

Coordinators: Prof. dr. L.L. Cheng and Dr. M.J. van der Wal. A list of all members of ULCL, arranged by theme group, appears in Appendix 1.

1.1 Board

ULCL has a Direction, a Board and a Board of external advisers. The Direction consists of Prof. dr. V.J. van Heuven, Dr. J.M. van de Weijer (partly replaced in 2002-2003 by Dr. R.W.N. Goedemans) and Mrs. J.W.G. Birker (from 1 October, 2002: Mrs. I.S.M. Meltzer). They meet on a weekly basis. The other members of the ULCL Board are Prof. dr. A. Verhagen (chairman), Prof. dr. L. Cheng, Prof. dr. O. Fischer (Un. Amsterdam), Ms. Ineke van der Meulen (represent-ing the PhD candidates), Prof. dr. J.E.C.V. Rooryck and Dr. M.J. van der Wal. The advisory Board consists of Prof. dr. G.N. Clements (Un. Paris), Prof. dr. B. Comrie (MPI Leipzig), Prof. dr. J.J. Ohala (UC Berkeley), Prof. dr. H. van Riems-dijk (University of Tilburg), Prof. dr. em. H. 2.5 PhD defences

In 2002, eight PhD candidates successfully defended their dissertations, prepared within the context of ULCL. The names of the young doctors, the titles of their dissertations, (co-)promotors and dates are listed in Appendix 11.

2.6 Personalia

��Prof. Dr. Rolf H. Bremmer Jr. was appointed on 1 January 2002 as Professor of Frisian Language and Linguistics at Leiden University (0.1 position), sponsored by the Fryske Akademy.

��On 1 September, 2002, ULCL appointed four new PhD students: L. Vicente

(4 fte), R. Trnavac (3 fte), N. Elouazizi (3 fte) and K. van Leyden (1 fte).
