Demonstration For Against the Rape Crime by Peace Makers

Peace-makers, human rights activities, students and political leaders gathered for demonstration against

the rape of a minor at Basantapur in Kathmandu, in 11 March 2015. The demonstration started after a

seven-year-old girl in Kalaiya, Bara was found in unconscious after rape on February 20 and was

pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at Kanti Children Hospital in Kathmandu on Sunday. Nepal

Police had held Kanhai Gupta, 28, of Kalaiya-4, for his involvement in the rape on February 22.

The demonstration was organized by various right groups, civil society groups and organizations working

for children, JCYC Nepal being the one. This is not a first incident of rape within the month of February,

it has reported in other parts of the country as well including Lamjung, Makawanpur, Nawalparasi and

many other places. In the lack of victim protection mechanism, victim vulnerability of being mentally and

physically threatened or even tortured after police complaint is very much prevalent hence sometime

victims get out of contact from Police after filing complaint during the period and were forced for

reconciliation.

Sexual abuse and exploitation towards any one is a serious confront for a progressive society irrespective

of who the victim is. In the context of Nepal, child sexual abuse and exploitation is probably one of the

major challenges of the society. Due to lack of proper laws, strict implementation of available laws,

loopholes in the law are making Nepal one of the challenging places for children to live in. Also these are

contributing in increasing number of paedophile in Nepal. Based upon the facts available it can be stated

that the perpetrators for these abuses are near and dear ones be it family members, teachers, and family

A discussion program on the role of stakeholders in building human rights cities for Girl Child in

new constitution:

On the occasion of International Girl Child Day, 2014, ESDO Nepal in collaboration with Jagriti Child

and Youth Concern Nepal (JCYCN) organized an interaction program on “A discussion program on the

role of stakeholders in building human rights cities for Girl Child in new constitution” in Jorpati

South Asia are the most vulnerable group of population in terms of equality to education, health,

nutrition, sanitation, opportunities and access to resources. The cases of female feticide, child marriage,

household helper, sexual harassment, and physical and psychological trauma are common among the

South Asian girl children and Nepal is not much different than any other South Asian countries. Hence, in

male.

On the ending note, Mr. Tilottam Paudel stated that an educated girl child is pillar of a prosperous family;

if the rights of girl child are ensured at present her future won’t be secured. The present girl children are

the future half of the population of the nation. Hence, the protection of their rights to education, health,

sanitation, nutrition will leads to the prosperity of nation in future, taking under the consideration the fact

that women’s overall mental, physical and psychological development leads to the development of any

nation. So, in the new constitution should be address the girls child issue as a major issues and making the

human rights for girl child is must necessary to develop the country

Awareness campaign in the School of Nawalparasi and Kathmandu

to protect the gild child in case of various forms of discrimination, i.e. social, cultural, mental, and

conceptual. Girls in South Asian countries suffer from different kinds of discrimination. They got equal

rights as to boys but in practice are limited up to documents. Girls in south Asia are discriminated based

upon the accessibility of basis needs such as food, shelter, education, health, clothes etc. Based upon this

context, this campaign at first tried to create awareness about the rights of a girl child and dignified

human rights cities which is also a human right considered by United Nations.

and National Child Day of Nepal. Participants from different child clubs, school students, players from

Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal is a prominent organization in Nepal working towards the

betterment of children and youth. This has provided JCYCN with wide networks and alliances both at

national and international level. Despite having enough funding, due to its wide networks it is able to

work effectively at grassroots level. Additionally, volunteer staffs are often recommended by JCYCN for

various international exposures at prestigious international arena. However, lacks of enough funding often

avert JCYCN from working at its optimum efficiency. As well as, due to lack of enough funding JCYCN

need of the organization. Overcoming this challenge and working for the past 10 years is a major strength

of Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal.

8. NETWORKS AND ALLIANCE

JCYCN believes that an individual person or organization cannot create large changes in a society, but

when many like-minded organizations, both national and international, cooperate with each other much

more is possible. Therefore, JCYCN prioritizes network building with stake holders, women, youth and

child clubs on both the national and international level. Additionally JCYC Nepal is in constant

communication with United Networks of Young Peace Builder (UNOY), and in the 2013 JCYC Nepal has

organized a Girl rights advocacy program in collaboration with the Garden of Hope Foundation, Taiwan.

Annex I:

Major finding of the 8 principles that determine the quality of child and youth participation in peace

building were as follows:

In some initiatives information is effectively shared among children and youth but not in others.

in general there is less transparent information sharing by adults with children, than with youth.

Some child and youth clubs and initiatives are making efforts to include males and females from

diverse caste, ethnic and religious background.

Clubs provided important opportunities for males and females to collaborate with one another.

More systematic efforts are needed to assess and address protection and security risk that may be

faced when children and youth participate in peacebuilding with particular attention to challenges

faced by girls and young women.

Increased investment in intergenerational partnerships involving youth, children and adults is

required to enhance collaboration and accountability.

In some initiatives, there is insufficient accountability to children and youth, particularly younger

children from both their peers and adults.

Children and youth emphasized the need to establish legal provisions for child and youth

participation in the local peace committees ant the VDC , district and central levels.

Based upon the above findings, a set to specific recommendations have been developed for concerned

agencies, which are:

Political authorities to develop policies and procedures to support representation and meaningful

participation of youth and children in Local Peace Committees

Community members to stop discriminations on the basis of religion, caste, gender, disability,

age and other factors and collaborate with children and youth to prevent and address different

forms of discrimination and to help build social cohesion and peace in the community

Agencies working on peacebuilding or child/youth related programs should support

intergenerational dialogue and capacity building of children and the youth in peacebuilding,

including training in conflict analysis and conflict management, peace building, non-violent

communication, child/women/human rights

Children and Youth should increase efforts to support gender sensitivity and inclusive

participation of child ad youth from Dalit, Janajati and children/youth with disabilities, in their

club and peace building activities.

Female and males form diverse backgrounds should be meaningfully involved in the planning,

budget allocation, implementation and monitoring of their peaceduilding activities.

The media should disseminate information regarding child and youth participation and

peacebuilding efforts to increase awareness and encourage positive support among children,

youth and members of the public.

Donors should mainstream peacebuilding in their programmes, they should invest in vocational

skill training, and income generation programmes for female and male youth especially the most

marginalized.
