Jim called for a vote to approve the Standing Resolutions. All were approved unanimously.Jim introduced Senior Warden Audrey Schaus and thanked her for her leadership during a year of greatachievements.

Senior Warden’s Address – Audrey SchausGood morning everyone and welcome to our Annual Meeting. We have had an extraordinary year at Christ Church Greenwich and I need to begin by thanking you all.At last year’s Annual Meeting, we announced our intention to begin the major restoration of our Sanctuary- both interior and exterior. As you all know, the restoration of the Sanctuary is now complete. The churchinterior is more beautiful than ever with enhanced acoustics, better lighting, and an elevator that providesuniversal accessibility. During the renovation, as we moved our worship from the Sanctuary to the Chapel,to the Parish Hall and back again, we were served by Ushers, Greeters, Lectors, Hospitality, Membership,Sunday School teachers, the Music Department and all our choirs, Staff, Clergy and all of you. Please knowthat the generosity, flexibility, good will and patience that you all have demonstrated during this time wasrecognized and appreciated. So thank you.Our Sanctuary now stands as a beautiful restored space for worship and as a light to this community – asour Rector says, it serves as the Cathedral of Greenwich. In 2016, we will be finishing up the capital workthat we undertook with the Rise Up, Restore, Rejoice! Campaign. It is our hope that all the work will becomplete and the circular drive restored by the beginning of the fall program year. For the detail and planning that has gone into the completed work and for the work that is scheduled forthis coming year, we owe thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our Capital Projects Committee: NeilBouknight, Chris Nichols, Lynne Smith, Susan Sterne and the chair of the committee, George Belshaw. Wewill have more to say about George a bit later in this meeting, but for now to George and his committee– thank you all.

Our buildings and our campus are remarkable for their beauty but their true purpose is to support ourmission – to provide Nourishment for the Journey. While we have been busy restoring and and repairingour facilities, the active life of worship, service and learning at Christ Church Greenwich has continuedand this has been an exceptional year in these areas as well.

In 2015, we welcomed two new Curates to our staff, Andrew Moore and Suzanne Culhane. Andrew hasprimarily been working in Outreach, Youth and Evangelism, while Suzanne has been concentrating on ourfundraising initiatives. The 2016 Annual Appeal is well on its way to success and we are welcoming new-comers almost every Sunday morning.

We continue to welcome young families to our parish and we see this in the amazing energy of our chil-

dren’s service and Church School program. This year, we have 19 volunteer Sunday School teachers whoteach a growing number of Church School students. Our Church School children are our youngest andquite possibly our most effective evangelists encouraging their friends to come to Church and to specialservices like the Christmas pageant.

Our Youth Program continues to grow as well. We had an incredibly successful Youth Mission trip toKentucky; we have another fully subscribed Confirmation Class; and Chris Edwards, our Youth Minister, and Andrew Moore have launched an exceptional youth podcast, Scrap Paper Theology.

Our music program is another area of excellence and growth for our parish. Between all our choirs: theboys, the girls, the ever-popular St. Nicholas Choir; the Christ Church singers; the Men and Boys; the BellChoir and our beautiful Compline Choir – we have close to 100 choristers and musicians serving ourchurch.

Our adult learnings have continued with Enneagram workshops, EFM, Faith on Fire, book groups andBible studies and opportunities for reflection offered by Jim, by Andrew and by Jenny. Becky Ford is thenew Director of Courage and Faith, and the Bookstore presents a series and is developing a rich and excit-ing series of learning opportunities for this program year.

In Outreach and Partnerships, we will continue to support Neighbor to Neighbor and their plans for a newbuilding. Neighbor to Neighbor is currently in conversation with the Town of Greenwich Planning andZoning And they are hopeful that construction can begin before the end of 2016.

As for finances, we continue to be very responsible stewards of the financial resources entrusted to us. Ina few minutes, our Treasurer, Ken Hopson, will report on the annual financial results and Jim MacPhersonwill report on our Endowment – I will only say that both are in good shape and both teams are doing anexcellent job on behalf of this parish.

In the area of Administration, at the request of the Rector, the Human Resources Committee and an out-side advisor worked to determine the best way to engage our very real staff talents and resources and toensure the most efficient and effective running of our programs and campuses. This review culminatedin a recommendation to the Rector for a reorganization and the development of two new positions – anExecutive Director of Business and Finance Operations and an Executive Director of MarketingCommunications and Parish Relations. We welcome Craig Cecere as our Executive Director of Businessand Finance Operations. Craig will be on campus five days a week and will oversee the financial opera-tions as well as the business operations of the church including managing our property and the sextonstaff. As we move out of the Capital Campaign restoration phase and into the ongoing maintenance of ourfacilities, Craig will play a key role in ensuring that we are planning for the appropriate maintenance ofour properties and systems. We are incredibly grateful to have Susan Reed step into the role of ExecutiveDirector of Marketing Communications and Parish Relations. In this role Susan will be responsible for thedaily running of the Parish Office, promoting and deepening our partnerships, scheduling and facilityoversight, will be our liaison with the Diocese and will have human resources responsibilities. Most impor-tantly, Susan will have a primary focus on developing an inclusive, cohesive marketing communicationsplan. This work will be integral and crucial to the next phase of growth and planning at Christ ChurchGreenwich.

So – onto the new Long Range Plan. The new Long Range Plan focuses on our future with a foundationalunderstanding that engagement leads to transformation. We are committed to offering a broad range ofopportunities for engagement in the life of our parish in worship, in learning and in service.Much of this plan came out of the work of the 2015 Vestry retreat. Since that time, we have worked, in

It has been a pleasure working with the construction team: Owner’s Rep, Steph Slater of TurnberryPlanning, architects Josh Brandfonbrenner and Amanda Loy, and DHI Construction lead by Howard Dymand his supervisor Chris Leonardi.

Thanks to your generosity to the Capital Campaign, these generational repairs to our campus have beenpossible. Please feel free to reach out to any of us on the committee if you have questions. Thank you.

In recognition and thanks for his work, Jim and Audrey presented George with a small gold and blueenamel pin in the form of the Christ Church shield. The pin had originally been given to Peter Ogden inappreciation for his work on the restoration of the Tome-Higgins House.

Jim introduced Randy Schwimmer and said he has unmitigated perseverence in assessing and moving for-ward. He thinks transformation every day.

Closing Remarks – Randy Schwimmer, Junior WardenGood Morning! I love our Annual Meetings. It’s so gratifying to look back over the calendar year justended and reflect on how much we’ve accomplished. And to consider the exciting work ahead.

Right after last year’s meeting I was standing over there, thrilled to begin my first year as your JuniorWarden. Working with Jim and Audrey on strategic issues like our Long Range Plan, with the Vestry onmajor projects and initiatives, and with our commissions and committees on ways to enhance and extendthe church’s mission. Heady stuff, but after three years as your Treasurer I was ready for the next chal-lenge, to take on whatever critical job needed to be done.

So you can imagine my delight when, five minutes after the meeting ended, a former Senior Wardenapproached me and said, “Randy, now that you’re Junior Warden, I need your help.” “Absolutely”, I said.My first assignment! “What can I do?” “Well”, he said, “With all the snow outside, so-and-so took their dogon the sidewalk out there, and didn’t clean up after him!” This had to be a sign. The tasks ahead will comein all forms, I thought, not always glamorous, often frustrating, and sometimes leaving me wondering,

Page 13: annual parish meeting - Christ Church Greenwich...Christ Church Annual Meeting January 24, 2016 Opening – The Rev’d Dr. James Lemler, Rector Rector, Jim Lemler called the meeting

Isn’t there anyone else who can do this? But, in the end, it’s also extremely rewarding. And indeed it hasbeen all those things.

What I’ve seen is that we are truly blessed with so many of you devoting time and energies to decidedlyunglamorous but essential duties. I’m very excited about our incoming Vestry class. New faces and famil-iar ones, but each bringing experience and enthusiasm to out leadership.

It’s also wonderful to start off the calendar year with a complete set of clergy! Suzanne and Andrew havemade a real difference in their short time here. It’s incredibly satisfying to see them now with Jenny (as wesay in finance) adding value in all sorts of ways.

Speaking of staff, I’m very encouraged by the changes in our parish office. Craig Cecere and Susan Reedbring a wealth of experience to their new roles. I know Jim will appreciate their help streamlining opera-tions and improving efficiencies in many critical areas.

We’ve also been fortunate with a seamless transition at our Nursery School. Last year we selected JenniferPurdy as our new Director, replacing Julie Colligan. We thank Julie for her many contributions. As a CCNSparent (Elizabeth is a second semester freshman), and as a Board member I’ve had a front row seat on thepositive impact Jennifer’s already had. Our goal is simple: to have us recognized as the best nursery schoolin Greenwich.I particularly want to thank our Senior Warden. Audrey has been an amazing partner. Tireless, beyondpatient, with a wonderful sense of humor and authentic wisdom – she talked me off a number of ledgeslast year. We are extremely fortunate to have the benefit of her outstanding leadership.

Finally, to our fearless Rector, Jim –as you would say- thanks you, thank you, thank you. You’ve broughtus to a place of real renewal and growth, and now’s the time to build on that momentum.

In the year ahead I do look forward to working with Audrey and the Vestry to execute our Long RangePlan, with Ken Hopson to extend our record of fiscal responsibility, with Jim Elrod, Jim MacPherson andWes Oler to maintain our Endowment on a sound policy and financial footing, and with Susan Sterne toretain and grow our membership.

And yes, to pitch in whenever there’s a dirty, difficult job to be done. Thank you all, and God bless ourchurch.

Benediction and Adjournment – Rev’d Dr. James LemlerJim noted with appreciation that so many give invisible time at Christ Church – the Altar Guild, the musicdepartment and Church School teachers are just a few. We have been blessed with many partnerships thisyear, many of which happen on our campus. Jim said he and Sharon attended the 100th AnniversaryCelebration of Temple Shalom next door during which Christ Church was mentioned. The Junior League, the YWCA and Neighbor to Neighbor are also partners as well as neigh-bors. Fact sheets about Neighborto Neighbor are available, and their proposal for a new building will presented at Planning and Zoning onTuesday January 26th. Jim said the tradition of Wardens is to listen, and he commended Audrey andRandy for doing so to a much greater extent than he has seen anywhere else.

Following a closing prayer, the meeting was adjourned at 11:55.

Respectfully submitted,Emily Ragsdale, Clerk

vestry of f icer nomineesClerk Terrence “Terry” Martin, and his wife, Lynne Jordal, have been parish-

ioners of Christ Church Greenwich for the past 17 years. He is a EucharisticMinister as well as a Lector, and had the great pleasure of singing with theChrist Church Singers for a semester. Prior to joining Christ ChurchGreenwich, Terry served two terms as a Vestry member at Church of theHeavenly Rest in Manhattan. Before his retirement, Terry spent 34 years atCBS News. In that time, he served in many different capacities, includingcovering Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign in 1979-1980 and workingas Dan Rather’s anchor producer for 16 years through four presidential elec-tions and assignments that ranged from Dharan, Saudi Arabia, during thePersian Gulf War, to the haunting silence in Houston that marked the memo-rials to those who perished in the Challenger I disaster.
