The year behind us found Lincoln Park Zoo obsessed with snow. Not the onset of another polar vortex, thank goodness, but instead all the plans and preparations for the snow monkeys now residing at our state-of-the-art Regenstein Macaque Forest. Bringing this high-tech habitat together certainly required a flurry of activity. There was the journey that brought our eight-member snow monkey troop to Chicago from Inuyama, Japan. There was work on the exhibit itself, everything from shaping its central hot spring to install-ing the “trees” that tower above the outdoor yard. Scientists readied the research booth for touch-screen sessions, educators prepped guests to Build a Primate and zoo experts got ready to share the cool culture of Japanese macaques through digital signs and the fun and games of www.snowmonkeys.org. Of course, the snow monkeys weren’t the only noteworthy arrivals in the past year. Among other new zoo faces, Regenstein Center for African Apes welcomed a beautiful baby gorilla in February. Bella is the 52nd member of her species born at Lincoln Park Zoo and a living link to zoo efforts to conserve wild gorillas in the Republic of Congo’s remote Goualougo Triangle. The zoo’s research efforts marked a milestone year as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of hiring our first full-time scientist. Lincoln Park Zoo’s Conservation & Science team has blossomed into one of the largest in the country, with 40 members encompassing diverse specialties—and continents. In the last year alone, the Urban Wildlife Institute launched www.chicagowildlifewatch.org, a citizen-science effort that’s seen users make 1 million classifications of Chicago wildlife. Scientists at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes set up a miniature economy at Regenstein Center for African Apes, discovering that chim-panzees trading tokens for treats will work harder for a better reward. Hard work was in high supply throughout the zoo. It was evident in the Excellence in Programming Award our Young Researchers Collab-orative received from the American Alliance of Museums. It was clear in our record-setting ZooLights Presented by ComEd and PNC Bank, which attracted more guests than ever before. More than anything, though, it’s embodied in the commitment you’ve shown to keeping Lin-coln Park Zoo free, open…and cool for all who visit.

Build a Primate sessions and snow monkey debuts were part of the big buildup for Regenstein Macaque Forest, even as new arrivals like baby gorilla Bella made the year behind us one to remember.

25 years ago, the Lincoln Park Zoological Society hired its first full-time scientist, starting the zoo on the path to having one of the larg-est zoo-based Conservation & Science Departments in the country. Today, the zoo is home to more than 40 researchers, has published more than 200 papers in scientific journals and hosts experts who travel the world to conserve wildlife. Some of the top science news in the past year happened right here in Chicago, though. The Urban Wildlife Institute partnered with Adler Planetarium’s Zooniverse to launch Chicago Wildlife Watch on September 11. This citizen-science initiative, www.chi-cagowildlifewatch.org, lets users ID photos of wildlife collected by zoo camera traps across Chicago. Participants have made 1 million classifications, helping our scientists map the local ecosystem. The Urban Wildlife Institute also received a $1.5 million grant from trustee Abra Prentice Wilkin in January. This generous gift will let experts pilot their research nationwide, highlighting Lincoln Park Zoo’s leadership in this growing field. The Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes celebrated its 10th anniversary this year alongside a wealth of new findings. Studies from Lydia Hopper, Ph.D., revealed that chimpanzees will work harder for better rewards by having the apes trade tokens for treats at Regenstein Center for African Apes. A token-exchange system was also established in Kwan’s gorilla group, where the silverback claimed a monopoly on “premium” grape re-wards. The Fisher Center also prepped for research at Regenstein Ma-caque Forest. Katherine Cronin, Ph.D., was hired to lead snow monkey science at the state-of-the-art habitat, from behavioral monitoring to touch-screen studies. Another Fisher Center study showed that chimpanzees reared in non-natural groups—i.e., as

pets and performers—experience social and behavioral deficiencies as adults. The finding bolsters Project ChimpCARE’s work to find suitable homes for chimpanzees in North America. In other great ape news, postdoctoral fellow Stacy Rosenbaum, Ph.D., arrived at the Davee Center for Epidemiology and Endocri-nology in September for a two-year fellowship analyzing hormone levels in wild mountain gorillas—and the implications for relation-ships between males and offspring in this endangered species. Zoo researchers stayed busy in the field. Davee Center Director Rachel Santymire, Ph.D., traveled to South Dakota in April 2014 to monitor endangered black-footed ferrets. Santymire also visited Montana’s Northern Cheyenne Reservation in July to start a com-munity-health project on the relationships of health between dogs, people and wildlife. Scientist Anna Czupyrna returned to Tanzania for the Serengeti Health Initiative’s spring vaccination season. The Goualougo Tri-angle Ape Project added a new field site for chimpanzee and gorilla studies in the Republic of Congo. Finally, threatened smooth green snakes and ornate box turtles hatched at the zoo and were released into Illinois prairies. The Population Management Center led breeding and transfer plans for 70 zoo species across North America. Researchers in the Alexander Center for Applied Population Biology continued Popu-lation Viability Analyses to measure the long-term sustainability of zoo populations. The scientists even put their own work under the microscope, continuing a PMCTrack project analyzing the track record of the zoo community in following its own breeding and transfer recommendations. All this science leads to healthy, sus-tainable zoo populations for North American zoos.

Conservation & ScienceMarking Milestones and Chronicling Chicago Wildlife

Zoo scientists traveled to the field to conserve endangered black-footed ferrets, the Urban Wildlife Institute enlisted citizen scientists to ID Chicago wildlife at www.chicagowildlifewatch.org and Research Scientist Katherine Cronin, Ph.D., got ready for research at Regenstein Macaque Forest.

After a global trek of more than 6,000 miles, an eight-member troop of Japanese snow monkeys prepared to move into Lincoln Park Zoo’s Re-genstein Macaque Forest, the first fully new exhibit at the zoo since the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo in 2005. As construction of the $15.5 million state-of-the-art habitat progressed toward its public debut in April 2015, the zoo’s Animal Care, Veterinary Services and Nutrition Center staff tended to the health and habituation of the troop’s five female and three male snow monkeys. Those tasks were facilitated by an exemplary behind-the-scenes management area—just one aspect of the world-class care and research facilities made possible in large part by the Regenstein Foundation, which committed $8 million toward Regenstein Macaque Forest’s construction. Meanwhile, caregivers bid farewell to female polar bear Anana and her Andean bear, sun bear and spotted hyena neighbors as the McCor-mick Bear Habitat was demolished to make way for the Walter Family Arctic Tundra and Robert and Mayari Pritzker Penguin Cove. The two exhibits, scheduled to debut in 2016, will provide immersive, behavior-ally enriching homes for polar bears and African penguins. The former “bear line” inhabitants were moved to other Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos under recommendations from the AZA’s Population Management Center, headquartered at Lincoln Park Zoo. Across the zoo, animal care experts, researchers, zoo volunteers and students have all been trained to collect data on a variety of species with ZooMonitor, a new iPad app. Funded by an initial grant from the Rice Foundation, the customizable app offers an easy way to record behavioral, space-use and body-condition data for animals ranging from the Sichuan takin herd to black rhino Kapuki and her baby, King. Thanks to a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, ZooMonitor will be further developed so it can be shared—for free—with institutions around the world. chuan takin Kalsang, a Francois’ langur baby, seven dwarf mongoose pups, a Moholi bushbaby, an Inca tern hatchling, two swan geese hatch-lings, two trumpeter swan cygnets, seven hooded merganser chicks and two lesser green broadbills. Other exciting new arrivals included Amur tiger Pahstrel, black bear Birch, snow leopard Taza, a red panda breeding pair and 13 eastern massasauga rattlesnakes. New species also made their zoo debuts, including Chacoan pecca-ries, a Muscovy duck, a Meller’s chameleon, African rock pythons and Mexican lance-headed rattlesnakes.

GardensNew Looks for Classic Spaces

The zoo’s beloved “Dream Lady” has become more dreamlike thanks to a gift from Lincoln Park Zoo Trustee John Alexander and his wife, Emily Fisher. A new water wall embedded with black stones now stands behind the historic sculpture (officially, the Eugene Field Memorial) at the northeast corner of the Helen Brach Primate House. Stately garden beds and two new stone benches flank the path leading to the sculpture. Lavender-hued annuals brought another peaceful palette to the main zoo grounds in the year behind us. The circle garden in front of Café Brauer also underwent a marvelous makeover with support from zoo trustee David Bolger. A low, red-brick wall and decorative urns showcase ornamental and native plants in the center of the circular driveway, while the surrounding lawn blooms with thousands of daffodils in spring.

While all the new residents spur plenty of excitement from care-givers and guests, the zoo family also said a few hard goodbyes in the last year. Geriatric female lion Myra was humanely euthanized after a de-cline in health that irreversibly compromised the elderly predator’s quality of life. Myra arrived at Lincoln Park Zoo in 1997, coming from South Africa’s Kapama Game Reserve, where she’d been res-cued as a cub. She produced three cubs in 1999 with male lion Ade-lor, and after the latter’s passing shared a social pairing with 4-year-old male Sahar. Even at 18 she continued to show good health until her decline. Expert care also contributed to the extraordinary longevity of Vicky, a geriatric chimpanzee in the behind-the-scenes group at Re-genstein Center for African Apes who lived to the age of 50. The elderly ape was humanely euthanized following complications that arose due to her advanced age and long-term heart condition. Ul-timately, the arc of Vicky’s life reminds us how far zoos have come in planning populations—and offering care. Veterinary advancements have geriatric animals living longer, healthier lives than ever before.

Last May, zoo educators took home some top honors from their peers at the American Alliance of Museums’ Annual Meeting. The alliance’s Education Professional Network Committee awarded the zoo’s Young Researchers Collaborative their 2014 Excellence in Pro-gramming Award, a welcome recognition for a program that intro-duces hundreds of students to hands-on research every year. Hands-on learning played a role in plans for educational pro-gramming at Regenstein Macaque Forest, with special chats and a “Build a Primate” interactive mobile learning station located by the exhibit’s viewing windows. Primatology also surfaced at the 10th annual Science Celebration, hosted at Café Brauer by the Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo and zoo educators. The keynote speaker at the event—which showcased projects from the zoo’s Young Researchers Collaborative—was zoo Research Scientist Lydia Hopper, Ph.D. The primatologist provided an exciting overview of the groundbreaking research being conducted at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes. In its second year, the zoo’s Hurvis Center for Learning Innova-tion and Collaboration continued to strengthen and expand three of its trial programs. Partners in Fieldwork engaged high school youth in research activities that supported the work of the zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute—from bird surveys to camera-trap data collection. The Re-search Apprenticeship Program provided Chicago-area high school students the opportunity to spend eight weeks working alongside zoo researchers and engaging in authentic research experiences. The Ob-serve to Learn iPad app provided a mobile ethogram learning tool for countless students, teachers and wildlife lovers who can download it for free. Learning didn’t stop for students when school wasn’t in session. Adventurous one-day camps for preK–fourth graders were offered on Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Presidents Day—adding to the zoo’s popular camp programming during summer, winter break and spring break. Adult learners continued flocking to the highly successful Wine & Wildlife evening series. The insightful programs included “Inside Veterinary Care” with Dr. Lester E. Fisher Director of Veterinary Medicine Kathryn Gamble, D.V.M., and Hope B. McCormick Cura-tor of Birds Sunny Nelson as well as “All About Apes” with director Steve Ross, Ph.D., and Lydia Hopper, Ph.D., of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes. For a few guests, an evening experience at the zoo extended long after sunset. Families and groups participating in the Sleepover with the Animals program caught some z’s in sleeping bags pitched next to exhibits at Regenstein Small Mammal-Reptile House. The unique opportunity included evening activities that taught kids about the zookeeping trade and animal nutrition. Among the zoo’s outreach efforts, this is one where dozing off is fully welcome and expected.

EducationWelcome Recognition and Exciting New Programs

Zoo educators got ready to Build a Primate at Regenstein Macaque Forest, hosted the 10th annual Science Celebration with the Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo and continued their exciting Wine & Wildlife programs.

This year’s ZooLights Presented by ComEd and PNC Bank joined new heights of holiday spectacle with a record-setting audience. More than 500,000 guests joined us for fun ranging from synchronized light shows to our inaugural BrewLights Presented by Louis Glunz Beer, hosted by the Auxiliary Board. Among the ZooLights attendees were Lincoln Park Zoo’s members and donors, who had the zoo to themselves for our second annual Mem-bers-Only Night at ZooLights. The glowing good time was joined by other exclusive events throughout the year for our strongest supporters, including sneak peeks at Regenstein Macaque Forest and baby gorilla Bella, an exclusive farewell for polar bear Anana, our regular Mem-bers-Only Mornings and SuperZooPicnic, and a new series of mem-bers-only chats offering inside looks at everything from “Zoo-Mates” to Lincoln Park Zoo’s history with gorillas. Members also enjoyed a weekend of free rides on Lionel Train Ad-venture when the striking new attraction rang the bell for its opening run October 2. Sponsored by model train company Lionel, the miniature train offers kids a fun ride through a scenic meadow woodland near Regenstein Macaque Forest. Regenstein Macaque Forest also snagged the spotlight at last year’s Zoo Ball Presented by Guggenheim Partners LLC. Themed “Monkey Business,” the Women’s Board’s spectacular annual gala, co-chaired by Katie Gledhill and Caroline Huebner, employed an elegant Japanese mo-tif on July 11 to raise more than $1.2 million. Our young professionals’ organization, the Auxiliary Board of Lincoln Park Zoo, celebrated its 30th anniversary at Café Brauer on November 20. Auxiliary Board members have raised millions for Lincoln Park Zoo over the years, with events like their spring fundraiser, Zoo-ologie, supporting everything from the Farm-in-the-Zoo to con-servation projects around the globe. Spring gave way to summer last year with another sold-out Unit-ed Run for the Zoo, with runners strapping on their sneakers to keep Lincoln Park Zoo free and open to all. Local music and art were fea-tured on the Patio at Café Brauer for another summer season of Locally Sourced at the Patio, sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing Company. Finally, the zoo welcomed new events including a series of Adults Night Out and Zoo Ghost Tours. Both offerings brought new, curious audiences to the zoo—and provided valuable support for our mission of conservation, education and care.
