The President’s Message
The SHRM Jacksonville 11th Annual Conference & Expo is fast
approaching! Held on Wednesday, April 10 through Friday, April 12
at the UNF Adam W. Herbert University Center, this event is focused
on YOU and your educational and professional growth. Attendees
may receive up to 12 SHRM Professional Development Credits
(PDCs) and HRCI recertification credits by attending all three (3)
days. This newsletter issue is dedicated to getting you prepared for
the best conference experience possible.
Registrations continue through our website. Click HERE to register!
Here are a few things you can do to ensure you have a phenomenal conference experience but that
you also maximize this three-day conference for professional growth.
Talk with your Boss: Make sure your direct supervisor understands this investment and the
educational knowledge you’ll be bringing back to the company.
Attend Everything: Take full advantage of the conference events you register for. There are Pre-
Conference Sessions, educational breakouts, expo hall with a silent auction and a Thursday
evening networking event.
Network: At every event the conference offers opportunities to network and meet other HR
professionals. Take advantage of having all this talent and experience in one place and ask
questions, engage with other conference attendees and meet people you don’t know.
Expo Hall: Don’t miss our expo hall filled with companies who make your job easier and they want
to meet you! Because of their generous support, we are able to provide this content full
conference for a low registration price. When you’re in the Expo Hall, don’t miss the Silent
Auction, there will be many items for you to bid on and the raised funds go to the SHRM
Foundation which supports our HR Profession.
Give Back: A Humble Beginning Restoral Project Inc. and the Employer Support of the Guard and
Reserves are our conference Non-Profit spotlights. Please stop by their booth to learn how you and
your organization can support these causes
Have Fun! This conference experience was designed with you in mind. We want the entire
experience to be relaxing from the general sessions, educational breakouts to the networking
event. Enjoy the great venue, tasty food, wonderful keynotes and breakout speakers and our
Business Partners. So, have fun and enjoy!

#MeToo: A Year Later
Katie Brezinski
Attorney, Jackson Lewis
The #MeToo movement began in 2006, but it wasn’t until 2017
that it regained significant momentum. This movement has
prompted over 800 high profile figures in various professional
areas to be publicly accused of sexual harassment, sexual
assault, or workplace misconduct. It follows that the #MeToo
movement has demanded a change in the workplace
beginning with more comprehensive training for all employees.
In addition, many companies have taken this opportunity to
reevaluate and change their policies with respect to reporting,
investigating and remedial actions. This presentation will
highlight these changes and what employees, especially those
in Human Resources, can and must do to prevent and
properly deal with sexual harassment in the workplace. It will
also highlight the distinction between the court of public
opinion and the EEOC/a court of law with respect to the
standard that must be met for a finding of unlawful harassment
and how to handle that dichotomy.

Heather Cosgrove
Workforce Readiness Director
We are very much looking to continuing our partnership with Junior
Achievement (JA) this year. There will be a lot more volunteer
opportunities coming up throughout the year. Thank you to those who
will volunteer their time out of their busy schedules in early April to
interview over 120 students at Westfield High School. They are being interviewed for a JA$ Works
program where the selected students will be able to teach JA programs in the local elementary
schools. The Jacksonville JA has also applied for a grant to help them launch a new program this
fall, for which SHRM Jacksonville is named in as a partner. If they receive the grant there will be
more to come on the program and the exciting opportunities that will start this fall! If you are
interested in learning more about JA or volunteering, please email

SHRM Jacksonville Recognized as SHRM
Foundation Chapter Champion
Ken Heinrich, IV
SHRM Foundation Director
We are excited to announce that SHRM Jacksonville has been
recognized as a SHRM Foundation Chapter Champion for efforts
executed in 2018! We received this honor because of the multiple
efforts placed on raising funds and awareness for the SHRM Foundation. A special thanks goes
out to Heidi Barfield, who served as our SHRM Foundation Director for 2018. The SHRM Foundation
is a values-based charity organization that champions workforce and workplace transformation
and inspires HR professionals to make it happen.
Most of all, we want to thanks everyone who made a personal donation, added change to the
buckets at our chapter meetings, purchased raffle tickets, and spread the word so others could
also help to make a financial contribution. YOU are the reason our chapter continues to shine!
We hope to continue this tradition of excellence in 2019, but we need your help. For the eleventh
year in a row, our SHRM Jacksonville chapter will be holding a Silent Auction during our Annual
Conference and Expo being held on April 10-12, 2019 at the University of North Florida’s Herbert
University Center. We ask that you please consider contributing an item to our silent auction.
Some items that have sold well in the past include: gift certificates, themed baskets, holiday
décor items, or items specific to your line of business. It is an excellent cause and also a great way
to show our chapter of hundreds of local HR professionals your personal and professional support
for the SHRM Foundation!
Also, we ask that while you’re at the conference that you participate in the Silent Auction. Your
dollars go to supporting scholarships for Human Resources Professionals to become certified and
become leaders in the field.
If you are interested in donating a silent auction item, please complete the Silent Auction form

How Long Should Employers Retain Their
Immigration Records?
Giselle Carson, Esq.
Marks Gray
Your filing cabinet is overflowing. Boxes are taking over your workspace.
And you’re left wondering, “Do I really need to keep all this stuff?”
As an HR professional, an important part of your job is ensuring
compliance with business immigration laws. This means:
Keeping immigration records for current and former employees
who are foreign nationals working in the US
Ensuring files are accessible at either the principal place of
business or the worksite
Storing immigration records separately from personnel files
It’s also important to know when to get rid of your files – and not just because your storage is maxed
out. Due to the increasing number of government audits, you should purge expired records when
possible and retain only those documents required.
Ever wish you had a cheat sheet that explained what documents to keep – and when to toss them?
Well, you’ll find one below! If you have questions about your company’s compliance with maintaining
or purging immigration files, please contact us for assistance.
