Welcome to St. Matthew’s today! February 9, 2014 Welcome to St. Matthew’s Church: Our fellowship is enriched by your presence. Thanks to each of you for being with us today! Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have been coming here all your life, we hope your time of worship and fellowship is a blessing. Introduction for the Day: Light shines in the darkness for the upright, the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of justice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Through baptism we are sent into the world to shine with the light of Christ. Children for Baptism: (11:00) Everett, Gwendolen, and Theodore Butson, children of Melissa and Christopher Butson, Wauwatosa, celebrate the sacrament of baptism today. Gwendolen and Theodore are seven-month-old twins. Everett is five years old. Sponsors are Matthew & Katherine Barber and Sean & Kathy Butson. Flowers at the altar have been given by Pastor Ray W. Stubbe in loving memory of his paternal grandfather, William Stubbe’s February 22nd birthday. The Prayer Chain continues to faithfully pray for the needs of the congregation and community. If you would like the Prayer Chain to be praying for your needs, please use the blue cards in the pews or contact the church office at 414-774-0441. You may also e-mail the church at [email protected] or [email protected] with a prayer request. Coffee Today? Your donations at coffee time are directed toward the cost of the coffee. The price of coffee around the world is rising, so donations are more important than ever. Also, the Mt. Meru coffee we serve is a Fair Trade coffee from our partners in Tanzania which supports small farmers in the Mt. Meru region. There is a donation basket on the coffee table. Where are the bulletin announcements? The bulletin announcements are available as a separate set of pages and are available at the Welcome Center or near the ushers. To make good use of our resources, consider reading the announcements on our website - www.stmattslutheran.org - or email the church office to be added to the list of people receiving the announcements in advance, on Fridays. Did you know?Pastor Gary and Susan Erickson Scholarship Fund continues to growYou may wish to consider memorial contributions The scholarship fund was established in 2011 from memorial gifts in honor and memory of Susan Erickson and a large gift in memory of Robert and Elizabeth Froemming. The intent of this scholarship fund is to assist students in pursuing church related professions and enrollment in ELCA college. In order of preference the scholarship grants are offered to St. Matthew’s members who elect to become an ordained minister or to attain an advanced degree in theogical education. Secondly it will be offered to those students seeking a bachelors or a masters degree in a music program with intent to work in church related music. Scholarships may also be granted for students enrolled in an ELCA college with preference given to schools with a matching gift program. The Scholarship fund has grown over the past two years through the generosity of others’ gifts and memorials. All gifts are appreciated as we strive to support and assist students to achieve their goals of attaining their degrees in church related careers. Gifts and memorials and bequeaths in wills and trusts are very appreciated. Gifts should be made out to St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church which will then transfer to The Rev. What  is  Wholeness?   Stop for a moment and reflect on the quality of your life. Are you feeling Satisfied? Energetic? Healthy?

What are the current signs in your life that indicate that your life is rich and full and healthy? What signs say it is not as full or health-ful as you might wish?

Life includes the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual dimensions of life, which when working together in harmony, lead to a sense of well being and satisfaction with life.

It has to do with wholeness.

This retreat will look at these dimensions of life. How they inter-relate and interact with each other.

How they involve your mind, your connections with people and family, your sense of hope, your goals and dreams, your satisfaction with work. Hopefully, the time together will give you some tools for understanding yourself.

It will be an interactive time, as well as, a time for worship, a time for fellowship and time for fun.

A time to have a good sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

Retreat  Facilitator   Pr. Fran Odden was instrumental in developing small group ministry and retreat ministers during his pastorates. While serving at Central Lutheran in Minneapolis, he started over a dozen groups for men, called “Men in Motion.” Retreat leadership centered on themes such as: Faith at Work Self-Esteem Wholeness and Self-Care Marriage Enrichment Couples Communication Pastor Fran worked with the leadership at St. Matthew’s during the Mission Exploration process and pastoral search. Occasionally he has filled in on Sunday mornings.

Let Your Light Shine: L.E.D the way through Epiphany

St. Matthew’s Lighting Conversion ProgramOur Goal: $10,000 for interior lighting conversions

Here’s How It Works: “Let Your Light Shine” by sponsoring a single bulb for as little as $25 or any other level your heart dictates.

Glow $25-$99

Shimmer $100 - $249

Shine $250 - $499

Radiate $500+

Why: Supports our commitment to Care for Creation and our goal to become an Energy Star rated congregation.

Benefits: Annual energy savings of $4,000 and an estimated payback of just over 2 years.

Our commitment to you: St. Matthew’s will reinvest 50% of the estimated 1st year savings in additional energy savings projects.

To learn more about this initiative, see the Property Committee display in the Commons area. Learn not only about the St. Matthew’s conversion program but also how you can accomplish the same thing in your own home.

Mark your calendar:

During the Educational Hour on April 27th, the Property Committee will provide an overview of the entire St. Matthew’s lighting conversion program. They will also cover the reasons for the program and how you can take advantage of the same savings in your own home.

Please join us: Your sponsorship is truly the gift that will keep on giving. Won’t you please consider helping St. Matthew’s reduce its impact on our planet and reallocate half the savings to future projects to care for God’s good creation?

Clearly mark your sponsorship “LED the Way” and place it in the collection basket or drop it off in the Church office.

“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
