August Chamber Member Meeting Attendees

By Seth WhiteheadChamber Executive Director

Money and resources. You have to have plenty of both to make a business work, but you can’t get the latter

without the former. It’s a common conundrum for upstart and fledgling businesses. But for those who fit that

description in the Vandalia area, help is on the way.Kaskaskia College Small Business Development Center Director Steve Groner shared

details of the school’s business incubator program during his presentation at the Aug. 6 Vandalia Chamber of Commerce monthly members meeting.

Business incubators are basically highly affordable, fully-loaded, 120-square foot offices that can be rented by businesses that qualify. That rent includes a desk and chairs, a desktop PC with internet access, an inkjet printer, a phone with voicemail, a four-drawer locking file cabinet, a bookcase, two-drawer lateral/locking files, utilities and access to conference rooms, classrooms and training facilities.

KC has also paid for copies and long distance calls at its existing incubators, even though it isn’t obligated to. Tenants have 24-hour, seven-day-a-week access to the facility and get their own keys and security codes.

Rent is just $120 to $125 per month. “It’s not meant to be a profit-making venture (for the college),” Groner said. “It’s

actually meant to be something that is beneficial to the startup business community. For a small business owner it’s meant to not add stress to their life.”

Three such incubators will be available in Vandalia once the Phase II extension of the KC Vandalia Campus is completed. Construction will begin as soon as the state kicks in its financial obligation for the project.

There are two requirements for businesses interested in renting an incubator. First, they need to meet with Groner. Second, the prospective tenant must have a business plan. A written plan is preferred, but a verbal plan will suffice unless it is determined to be a questionable endeavor.

“The idea of that is to make sure it’s a good fit for where that person is in the development of their idea and the expansion of their business,” Groner said.

Groner said good fits for the incubators include: financial service companies, part-time attorneys, family counseling services, accountants, manufacturing reps for product lines and computer service firms.

Groner indicated the incubators are ideal for those looking to move their business out of their homes.

“If the noise, distractions and space just aren’t working out for them, that’s a perfect time to come to us,” Groner said.

The goal is for businesses to be self-sufficient enough to leave the incubator program in two years, although exceptions are made based on economic conditions.

Non-profit organizations are not eligible to participate.“I feel very strongly about helping those organizations,” Groner said. “But by college

rules the incubators are for businesses that are trying to make a profit.”

For more information, call Groner at 618-545-3260 or email him at [email protected] other business:• Chamber president Brock Brannon announced plans to print a 100th Anniversary

SPOTLIGHT continued from Page 1

By Earl O’KulyO’Kuly & Associates

The Vandalia Chamber, in conjunction with O’Kuly & Associates, recently completed a survey to answer two questions: 1.) How many people use the internet versus the phonebook to look up local businesses, and 2.) Which phonebook is used most often?

It is interesting that 66 percent used the internet the most, while only 34 percent said they used a phonebook to look up a local business. For phonebooks, the Hometown Phonebook hit a home run, with Yellowbook a distant second, and the Yellow Pages barely made a mark with a mere 6 percent of the responders using it.

The most telling information though came from a breakdown by age of those using the internet to look up local business information. In the 16-30 age group, a whopping 92 percent used the internet rather than a phonebook with the majority of them using a smartphone to access information.

The 31-49 age group was a bit more disparate, with 70 percent using the internet over using a phonebook. Fifty-one percent of those used a smartphone with the remaining 45% split between using tablets and home computers to look up local business information.

In the 50-plus group only 40 percent used the internet versus 60 percent using a phonebook to look up a local business. Another major difference with this group is that they tend to use their home computer when using the internet to look up a local business. Of that 40 percent, 37 percent used a smartphone and you can expect this number to increase because this group is finding this is the best way to stay in touch with their children and grandchildren. Who, by the way, are the ones most often teaching them how to use their new electronic toy!

So what can be gleaned from this information? If you advertise in the yellow pages of phonebooks, put your big money in the Hometown Phonebook, put a decent ad in the Yellowbook and make sure your business name is spelled correctly in the Yellow Pages Phonebook.

Next make sure you have a website that you market to the 60 percent that use the web to lookup local business information. If you have a brick and mortar business, it is extremely important to make sure you are listed on Google Business Maps followed up with Yahoo and Bing Business Maps.

Completely opposite of this survey’s information on phonebooks, make sure you are listed correctly with the online Yellow Pages because that is the most popular app after Google for looking up businesses.

Although pundits will take this information and tell you that traditional advertising, like radio and newspapers, is dead, don’t believe them. Traditional advertising is still strong, especially in our area. With that said though, ask yourself these questions before you advertise:

What are you selling?Who are your customers?

How much money do you have to spend? What is the timeframe of what you want to

accomplish?Use the answer to those questions to decide the

best way to advertise., However, make sure you ask yourself the most important overall question about branding: What do you want your customers and the community to think about you and your business? Act and advertise accordingly.

The bottom line from this survey is to show you how to spend your money more wisely when advertising in phonebooks, and within that even saving money. It is also about not leaving any money on the table, i.e., building your profits by making sure you have a presence, an easy to use presence, on the internet.

The survey was conducted at three area service stations that have mostly local traffic: FS, Sunset 66 and Circle K. There were 304 survey participants and a drawing was held at each station for a $25 gas card.

Survey Says: Internet trumps the phonebook

Chamber Printing 100th Anniversary CookbookTo help commemorate its 100th anniversary, the Vandalia

Chamber of Commerce is in the process of collecting recipes for a 100th anniversary cookbook.

All current Chamber members and their families, as well as their employees and their families, are invited to submit their favorite recipes for publication in this book. Past Chamber presidents and Abe Award winners will also be asked to submit recipes for what should become quite a collectors’ item.

To submit a recipe, please visit www.vandaliachamber.org to download a recipe submission form and return it to the Chamber office by mail at P.O. Box 238, Vandalia, IL 62471 or by email.

Deadline to submit recipes is Aug. 25. Make sure to include your full name and the Chamber-member business you are affiliated with. The latter is VERY important, so that your business gets its due exposure.

The book will also include info on the Chamber’s long history in Vandalia, a list of past presidents, a list of past Abe winners and a few historic photos.

We are planning on printing 500 cookbooks.Vendors Needed For Summer Breeze Barn DayzSummer Breeze Winehouse in St. James will be hosting

its “Barn Dayz Wine and Fall Festival” Sept. 13 and 14.

Craft, antique, handmade goods, and handmade food vendors are still needed for the festival. Management asks that no multi-level marketing companies inquire. For more information, please contact Mindy at 618-367-2798 or [email protected].

Brownstown VFW Hosting Fundraising EventBrownstown VFW Post 9770 will be holding a fundraiser

on Sept. 20 to raise money to help with the completion of its new building.

The event will include a ruck march called the “9-mile Gut Check,” where people who have signed up and paid an entry fee would meet at the American Legion in Vandalia and walk to the Brownstown VFW. There will also be a shorter route for those who don’t want to walk the full nine miles.

Participants will receive a T-shirt and there will be a meal and beverages at the post afterwards. ALL the money raised from the event will go directly to the VFW building fund and will not be used for anything other than the completion of the new building.

Participants, sponsors and volunteers are still needed. Please call Brian at 618-704-4183 or Robyn at 618-322-8824 if you are interested in participating or volunteering.
