  • At least 83p in every pound raised is

spent on our poverty-fighting programmes in the world’s

poorest communities, with the rest invested in fundraising

and the efficient running of the organisation.

In the village of Gumda in the Gorkha district of Nepal, one woman is overjoyed at receiving a CARE package of kitchen utensils as part of the recovery operation after

the devastating earthquakes in April and May 2015.

…to your latest special edition of CARE in Action, which looks at how CARE has evolved but held onto the same core values throughout our 70 year history. This November we celebrate our 70th anniversary and we’re planning a range of exciting activities and events to showcase our achievements and highlight the links between CARE – then and now.

Inside you’ll find out more about how our very first CARE packages sent by families in the US changed lives in countless households across post-war Europe including here in the UK. You’ll also learn about how with your help, we’ve kept up with this tradition by providing some of the world’s poorest people with the skills and equipment they need to stand on their own two feet.

You are very much a part of this story. Please join us in celebrating the achievements.

P.S. If you have any questions or anything you’d like to share with me, please get in touch – I would love to hear from you.

    Welcome...

Sending CARE packages was what CARE was first set up to do – and the first recipients of CARE packages were people in Europe recovering from World War 2. Thousands of families in the UK received CARE packages – can you help us find them, and save their stories for future generations?

This year, we celebrate our 70th anniversary. We now save lives and provide long-term solutions to poverty in 74 developing countries but our origins were in these simple acts of kindness from one person to another. It’s something that still holds true today.

I was in Nepal when the second earthquake hit, and I was struck by the deep terror on the faces of everyone around me. People in Nepal were scared of their own homes and afraid of the very land they live off.

In rural Nepal, houses are more than just homes. They also have space for livestock and for food stores. So losing

James and his mother Nasuna receiving malaria medicine at the CARE-run health clinic in Yida, South Sudan.

their homes means people have lost not just a place of safety, but also their livelihoods.

That’s why building new houses they can trust is the top priority of nearly all the victims of the earthquake.

Our first steps were to get people under basic but dignified shelter and ensure access to food, water and sanitation.

We are now working to help them build back their houses, using local materials backed up by techniques to make homes safer and stronger.

With your help, through technical support to the most vulnerable people, we’ll be there to help whole communities who need to re-build, stronger, from scratch.

Thank you from Nepal Life2Live campaign update

In your last CARE in Action newsletter we introduced our Life2Live campaign for healthy lives from the moment a child is born through to adulthood. The UK government pledged to double any donation we received to the campaign – making it a fantastic opportunity to help even more women and children lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

There was an amazing response and you were all so incredibly generous, donating over £280,000 which the UK government will now double to £560,000. This could help provide safe births and life-saving malaria medicine in South Sudan, give families in Ethiopia safe water, and provide teenage girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the support they need to make their own choices about their future.

Thank you to everyone who donated and helped show that every life should be a life to live.

Tom Newby, civil engineer and our Shelter expert, flew to Nepal directly after the first earthquake hit on

25 April. His extensive experience and passion for field-work made him an invaluable asset to our response. He describes how your generous support helped the people of Nepal.

Over 600 women, men and children came to listen to Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour’s Jane Garvey in conversation with Annie Lennox and Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney among others, before Helen Pankhurst led the walk through London. Actress Gemma Arterton and singer Paloma Faith also attended to show solidarity with women in developing countries across the world.

Look out for the next International Women’s Day walk in March 2016.

Calling all community groupsIf you are part of a group and would like to know more about how you can support CARE and help poor communities across the world, please get in touch with Helen at: [email protected] or call 020 7091 6100.

Thank you for Walking In Her ShoesSchools across the UK got behind our annual Walk In Her Shoes campaign, raising vital funds for our work with women and girls. St Saviour’s primary school in London won an assembly with best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson, while Wolverhampton Girls’ High School claimed the prize of a talk from Dr Helen Pankhurst, great granddaughter of the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. Well done and thank you to everyone who took part.

Join us for the challenge of a lifetimeIn November 2016 we will be cycling 650km from Laos to Cambodia, going off the tourist trail to visit local communities – including a community that has been supported by CARE through your donations – and completing your epic challenge at one of the seven wonders of the world, Angkor Wat.

You can send a CARE package to future generationsBy leaving a gift in your Will to CARE International UK, you could give families the chance to be well-nourished, with better healthcare, and the skills they need to look after future generations. Just like the Killagllon family from here in the UK who received one of the original CARE packages after World War 2 from generous supporters like you.

Thank you so much for continuing to care for others. To find out how even a small percentage of your Will can make a big difference, please contact Elise Aston on 020 7091 6100 or email [email protected]
