OVERVIEW

Anise is a herb. The seed (fruit) and oil, and less frequently the root and leaf, are used to make medicine.

It is used for: - upset stomach - constipation - intestinal gas - antispasmodic and smooth muscle relaxant - asthma - runny nose - expectorant - diuretic - appetite stimulant - trouble sleeping (insomnia)

Women use anise to increase milk flow when nursing, start menstruation and increase sex drive.

Men use anise to treat symptoms of “male menopause”

Some people apply anise directly to the skin to treat lice, scabies, and psoriasis.

In foods, anise is used as a flavoring agent. In manufacturing, anise is often used as a

fragrance in soap, creams, perfumes

HISTORY

Anise has a history of use as a spice and a fragrance. It has been cultivated in Egypt for at least 4,000 years. Records of its use as a diuretic and treatment of digestive problems and toothache are seen in medical texts from this era.

In ancient Greek history, writings explain how anise helps breathing, relieves pain, stimulates urination, and eases thirst.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The main active constituent in anise is anethole which has estrogen-like effects, it may also acts as insecticide.

It appears to mimic the activity of human hormones such as estrogen or progesterone, or make proper levels of such hormones in the body by normalizing glandular and hormonal activity.
