An introduc+on to Beacons
Beacons See the world in a whole new way!
It’s not a chip. It’s not a technology.
It’s a new way to experience the world. We call it shopbeekn!
We’ll show you why it ma?ers to bring online and offline
together.
Bluetooth LE: What is it?
• Bluetooth LE is a specifica7on (Not to be confused with Bluetooth).
• The specifica7on is used to create Bluetooth LE chipsets -‐ e.g. contact chipsets.
• The chipsets are embedded in devices -‐ e.g. Es7mote devices.
Bluetooth LE: What does it?
• Bluetooth LE devices transmit small packets of data. Which wake up a “listener” to let it know that it’s there.
• Which then lets you calculate proximity to the Beacon and show relevant informa7on to the visitor.
Bluetooth LE: Where is it?
Bluetooth LE is embedded in things like • Watches • Tags • Detectors • … • And Beacons
A Beacon: What is it?
iBeacon is an indoor posi7oning system that Apple Inc. calls “a new class of low-‐powered, low-‐cost transmiMers that can no7fy nearby iOS 7 devices of their presence.” They can also be used by the Android opera7ng system. The technology enables an iOS device or other hardware to calculate proximity to the Beacon -‐ so that relevant push no7fica7ons can be sent.
A Beacon: What is inside?
Remember NFC?
… near field communica7on works only for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communica7on within proximity of a few inches.
Beacons have a much greater reach and are more flexibel.
But did you know there are
Millions of Bluetooth LE Beacons in
the world?
They’re called phones!
… or tablets.
Because your mobile device is a Beacon
too.
Wow!
• Phones (and tablets) can finally “see” what they’re close to.
• It’s low energy: your phone doesn’t lose baMery and a beacon can last for years without being plugged in.
• It’s cross-‐plaRorm: all the major phone plaRorms have Bluetooth LE capabili7es (although some s7ll need to turn those capabili7es “on”).
But ... hold on!
I can already use my phone to figure out where I am.
What’s the big deal?
Ah yes – GPS.
On the one hand, you can think of Bluetooth LE as an ‘extension’ of loca7on technology: • It’s a lot like GPS but also uses a lot less baMery. • GPS doesn’t work very well once you get inside.
Bluetooth LE does.
So what?
But if you think of Bluetooth LE as “indoors/low baMery GPS”
you’re missing
the bigger picture.
Please – come close to me!
GPS is a loca7on technology. Bluetooth LE is a proximity technology.
Which means that even if the Beacon moves
you’ll s7ll be able to find it*.
* Like a store shelf say. Or a register. Or people.
Ohhh – I see!
Far & near
Why it ma?ers.
So it may be a young technology, but it’s big news.
We can now deliver content and experiences to users based on precise proximity to things
in the physical world.
Just think of all the things you’re “near” in a day.
Did you no+ce?
There is no offline.
The physical world is the new
digital channel!
Case study: Retail

• Greet customers when they arrive • Send specials, offers and coupons at specific
loca7ons in the store • Connect to loyalty programs • Offer personal pricing • Implement proximi7y driven ad-‐screens • Upsell • Offer contactless payment
Real+me analy+cs and sta+s+cs
Analy+cs, sta+s+cs and more • Aggregate and analyze behavior and traces of the
customers • Analyze interests and shopping decisions of your
customers -‐ in your shop but even off loca7on • Be able to take ac7on on customers behavior and
feedbacks • Increase in-‐store visitor experience • Op7mize Target Online Marke7ng • Have meaningful dashboards at your finger7ps • Run cross-‐dataset analysis, do peer comparisons, and
generate ac7onable reports
