Animals & Buildings, a temporary gallery in KansasCity's West Bottoms, hosts theexhibitionConversation, Part 1 for two weeks, openingFriday, May 13, 2011. Artists in the exhibition areBrett Chenowith, Sarabeth Dunton, J ared Flaming,Lori Raye Erickson, and Ryan Haralson.

Most of the artists have studios in the Hobbs Building.

Animals & Buildings is on the sixth floor. The idea forthe exhibition was to provide an larger exhibitionspace for Hobbs Building artists above and beyondthe "pop-up" opportunities they create for themselvestwice a year with Hobbs Building Open Studios.

Brett Chenoweths works on paper are amythological connection to a dreamlike past. His ruinsmay represent the ending of an era but, like all ruins, they endure, providing a bridge to our dreams and toanother time.

Chenoweth has shown ocally and nationally. Hisstudies in literature, philosophy, and theology informhis work. He has been an art instructor in Kansas Cityand on the East Coast. He lives in Kansas City withhis daughter and his dog.

Sarabeth Dunto n creates intricate pen and inkdrawings that mimic the growth and solidity of thehome, inside and out. This series of drawings hint atNeutra-inspired planks flowing into intricate Asianfloral and mountainscapes, as East meets West.

Dunton received her BFA in painting at the Universityof Michigan in 2006. A recent transplant to KansasCity, Sarabeth and her husband moved from NewOrleans. She has lived in Michigan, Louisiana,Vermont, Greece, and India. Dunton has had workshown in Kansas City,Missouri; Ann Arbor, Michigan;New Orleans, Louisiana; and Paros, Greece.

Long established as a Kansas City artist, Lori RayeErickson is a graduate of Kansas City Art Institute. She received a Charlotte Street Award and anAvenue of the Arts grant. Her work is infused withbright colors, text, numbers, sideshow freaks, andhumor, This particular group of work embodies acarnival flair, without the representational imagerytypical to most of her work.

Jared Flaming, Discourse in a Public Forum, 2011, Carved wood, spray paint, printing in k, 4 x 4'.

Jared Flaming absorbs pop culture and its influenceis prevalent. Graffiti-type patterning fills his panelsedge to edge suggesting an undeniable permanenceof space. He integrates youthful symbols andpentagrams into every piece.

University of Kansas. The seriousness ofRyan Haralsons subjects arepunctuated with elements of good humor. Hissubjects confront some truth about ourselves;whether it be racism, classism or debt. Floating

around these heavy truths, Haralson also insertsbrightly colored hot air balloons that give us room tobreathe and observe this seriousness from a higherplateau.

Haralson is a 2007 graduate of the MilwaukeeInstitute of Art and Design with a BFA in IndustrialDesign. He has shown his work in and aroundKansas City.
