VITAL FUNCTIONS• There are vital functions that chracterise all living

things.

• NUTRITION

• INTERACTION

• REPRODUCTION

Page 3: Animal planet

NUTRITION• Some living things (like human and animals) get their

food by eating other living things.

• They can be clasifiied into three groups:

• HERBIVORES: They only eat plants. ZEBRAS.

• CARNIVORES: they eat other animals. LEOPARDS

• OMNIVORES: they eat other animals and plants.

MONKEYS.

• However, plants are able to make their own food.

Page 4: Animal planet

INTERACTION• We receive information from the world through our

senses. Then, we make decisions.

• For example, when we are cold, we put on a

jumper.

• Acting and reacting to the wrold around us is

known as INTERACTION.

Page 5: Animal planet

REPRODUCTION• Lions can give birth to lion cubs, and plants can use

their seeds to make new plants.

• There are different types of reproduction:

• OVIPAROUS – Ducks are born from eggs.

• VIVIPAROUS- Urchins give birth to their young.

• SEEDS- Beans are born from seeds.

Page 6: Animal planet

VERTEBRATES

Page 7: Animal planet

VERTEBRATES• All vertebrates have an internal skeleton that is

made up of many bones.

• Some vertebrates are viviparous. (dogs and human

veings)

• Other vertebrates are oviparous (frogs, eagles and

lizards)

Page 8: Animal planet

BODY PARTS OF VERTEBRATES

• Commonly the bodies of vertebates can be split

into:

• HEAD

• BODY

• LIMBS

Page 9: Animal planet

INVERTEBRATES

Page 10: Animal planet

Some animals don’t haveskeletons. They are INVERTEBRATES.

Page 11: Animal planet

INVERTEBRATES

• All invertebrates have one thing in common: they

are OVIPAROUS

• They aren´t VIVIPAROUS

Page 12: Animal planet

Invertebratesdon’t have a backbone.

Page 13: Animal planet

ARTHROPODS• Arthropods is the biggest and most important

group of invertebrates.

• All arthropods have an external skeleton that

protects their body.

• They also have many legs.

This group can be divided into three subgroups:

-insects (six legs)

-arachnids (eight legs)

-crustaceans (ten legs)

Page 14: Animal planet

INSECTS• It is the largest group of arthropods.

• Their body is divided into three parts: HEAD, THORAX

AND ABDOMEN.

• They have two antennae and may have wings.

Page 15: Animal planet

Insects are invertebrates.

ARACHNIDS• Their body is divided into two parts: Cephalothrax

and abdomen.

• Arachnids don´t have antennae or wings.

Page 17: Animal planet

CRUSTACEANS• Their body is divided into two parts:

• Cephalothorax and abdomen

• They have two antennae but don´t have wings.

Page 18: Animal planet

SPONGES• Sponges live at the bottom of the sea.

• They are fixed to the ground so they cannot move

around.

• Their body is full of holes known as pores.

• Food and water enter their body through these

pores

Page 19: Animal planet

JELLYFISH• Jellyfish can be very dangerous animals.

• They have poisonous tentacles that they use to hunt

other animals.

Page 20: Animal planet

ECHINODERMS• Starfish and sea urchins are echinoderms.

• They have many small feet that they use to move

along the bottom of the ocean.

• SEA URCHIN STAR FISH

Page 21: Animal planet

WORMS• Worms have a long soft segmented body that is

made up of rings.

• Some worms live in the ground, while other live in

water.

Page 22: Animal planet

MOLLUSCS• All moluscs have soft muscular bodies that they use

to move around the ground or through the water.

• There are three types of mulluscs that have shells:

• Molluscs with two shells. MUSSEL

• Molluscs with one shell. SNAIL

• Molluscs with an internal shell. SQUID

Page 23: Animal planet

REVIEW • All living things have three vital functions in order to

grow and live. These are: nutrition, interaction and

reproduction.

Page 24: Animal planet

REVIEW• Animals eat food to get energy. Carnivores only eat

meat and hervivores only eat plants. Omnivores eat

both meat and plants

Page 25: Animal planet

REVIEW• Some animals give birth to their young and others

lay eggs.

Page 26: Animal planet

REVIEW• Animals with bones are called vertebrates and

animals without bones are called invertebrates.

Some animals have an external skeleton known as

a shell.

Page 27: Animal planet

REVIEW• The biggest groups of invertebrates are arthropods..

They can be classified into three groups: arachnids,

crustaceans, and insects. Each of these groups has

a different number of legs.

Page 28: Animal planet

REVIEW• There are other groups of invertebrates that live in

water. They are jellyfish, molluscs, sponges,

echinoderms and worms.

Page 29: Animal planet

TRUE OR FALSE?• Spiders are arthropods because they have an external

skeleton and many legs. TRUE

• All vertebrates aren oviparous. FALSE

• Frogs are vertebrates because they have a backbone

and an internal skeleton. TRUE

• All invertebrates are oviparous. TRUE

• Arthropods have an external skeleton and many legs.

LET´S PLAY A GAME• WHAT ANIMAL IS IT?

• YOUR ARE AN

ANIMAL THAT LIVES

AT THE BOTTOM OF

THE SEA. YOU

CANNOT MOVE

BECAUSE YOUR

FIXED TO THE

GROUND. YOUR

BODY IS FULL OF

PORES.

Page 36: Animal planet

What animal is it?• You are a dangerous

animal. You have

poisonous tentacles

that you use to defend

yourself.

Page 37: Animal planet

one shell.

WHAT KIND OF ARTHROPOD ARE YOU?

• THINK OF AN

ARTHROPOD

AND ANSWER

THESE

QUESTIONS:

• - Do you have wings?

• Do you have a

cephalothorax?

• How many legs do you

have?

• How many parts is your

body divided into?
