    agine youve just arrived home

om work. You open the door tohome and your 3 year old Choco-

ab, Fifi, greets you. Shes bounc-

up and down with her tennis ball

running in circles around you and

offee table, jumping on the couch

off; shes so excited! You grab the

h which sends her into another tail

Out the door you go. Past your

10 yard and out onto the street. All

wants to do is run. She keeps yank-

he leash and trying her hardest to

ou to run and play with her. Shes

inside all day and all she needs is

utlet for her energy.is is most of our lives. A lot of

k walks, maybe a long one once or

e a day, a hike on the weekends if

e lucky. If youre fortunate enough

ve a fenced in yard things are a lit-

it different, but not much. Our

depend on us for so much, includ-

    timulation and energy release.

is where Kristie and I come in.

tie owns a condo in the center of

ox. Her life is the one described

e, minus the yard and the cat!

ties dog, Roscoe, is 75lbs of pure

gy and muscle. He needs to runrun and run. My life is a little bit

rent. I have the land to run but not

much stimulation. My dog is basi-

the smaller model of Roscoe. Un-

    nately, when Kota doesnt get

gh exercise, she turns into a mon-

    barking and jumping and finding

all sorts of trouble to get into.

Kristie and I would get our dogs to-gether for play dates every few weeks.

The two dogs could chase each other

for hours and hours. After a day of

play, both dogs would sleep at least 14

hours! The only issue being Roscoe

wasnt the best at coming back when

called. This isnt a problem when you

live in the middle of the woods in Otis,

but when I moved to West Stockbridge

I now found myself with neighbors.

Neighbors who may not appreciate two

large pitbulls running up to them! What

we needed was a fenced in yard, which

unfortunately arent very common. Many people dont believe dog parks

are needed around here. With all the

hiking trails and parks, or large yards,

why do we need a designated dog area?

Dogs need to be challenged; they need

new smells and to socialize. They also

need the opportunity to run in a clean,

    safe environment. Dog parks promote

responsible pet ownership as well, by

requiring up to date vaccinations and

pet health records. Socialization and ex-

ercise is the key to a happy and well be-

haved dog. The parks give dogs an

outlet to rid themselves of excess en-ergy, thereby reducing problem barking

and other behavior problems. The eld-

erly and disabled can also safely inter-

act with their pets in this controlled

environment. Having a fenced in area

where dogs can run off-leash also helps

keep ball parks and public parks clean.

Over a year and a half ago Kristie and I

started the process of developing a dog

park in Berkshire County. We spent

hours going over proposals and figur-

ing out which town would be the best

    bet.

    Thankfully, the Lee Selectman thought

it was a great idea. We have now

started fundraising for a 2 acre parcel of

property. The money raised will help

build and maintain the park. Through

fund raising events such as our Date

    Auction at Michaels in Stockbridge

    and our Motorcycle Ride from

Bartletts to the Brick House we have

raise $4500 out of our needed $20,000.

    Its a slow process bu
