la Fuller, volunteer for pet partners

As some of you who have read my previous articles already know, I have

always had a passion for animals and their care. Currently, I am pursu-

ing my final year of college for my Bachelor of Science in Captive

dlife Care and Education at Unity College in the state of Maine.

part of my degree students are required to complete a 3 credit, 180-hour, in-

ship at an animal facility of their choosing. Two summers ago I had met Ter-

alyn LaChance, Education Director at the Zoo

in Forest Park and Education Center, and

talked with her about the possibility of com-

pleting my internship at her facility. That win-

ter I had a working interview with her and she

hired me for this past summer.

Being an intern in the Education Department

required me to conduct educational animal

shows, called Zoo on the Gos, all aroundMassachusetts and Connecticut in schools, re-

tirement homes, and other facilities. I had to

work with a variety of livestock, mammals,

reptiles, and bird species. This was essentially

my dream job and I couldnt have asked for a

better supervisor, she was supportive and

    made the entire experience amazing.

Over the three-month period I worked with

    the following animals; rabbits, skunks,

    African Pygmy Hedgehogs, Armadillos

    (three-banded and hairy), Pygmy goats,

    Cockatoos (Umbrella and Sulfur-Crested), a

    Peahen, and various reptile species such as;

entinian Black and White Tegu, Dumerils Boa, Red-Tail Boa, Ball Pythons, ded dragons, and Corn snakes.

s experience allowed me to not only learn about each individual animals nat-

history but also about how to make shows interactive and engaging to better

rm the public and reach different audiences. I also had the once in a lifetime

rience of working with a three month old African Lion cub named Samson,

e Capybaras (Charlie, Macy, and Gracie), and five baby pygmy goats.

an intern I worked to desensitize these animals to human contact, which al-

Zoo staff to have an easier time working with them. I also got the pleasure

aily camel kisses from the Zoos Dromedary Camel Max and that in and of it-

    was a treat.

first time I held Samson tears filled my eyes and I knew that I was in the right

    e. By the end of the summer Charlie the Capybara was so comfortable with

hat he allowed me to rub his belly and would cuddle next to me to get more

ntion. I will never forget the opportunities I had this summer nor the wonder-riends I made. Through this amazing experience I am one step closer to ful-

g my dream of working with exotic animals full time and educating the public

he amazing species our world has to offer.

here has been much research about

    he health and emotional benefits

wning a pet. There is even more to

about the many benefits of seniors

pet ownership. This is certainly thefor Mary E., who is a resident at

ball Farms in Lenox. Shortly after

ing at Kimball Farms, she lost both

er beloved elderly dogs. Mary had

an animal welfare supporter and a

nteer for animals her entire life.

    suddenly found herself without a

    When Kimball Farms staff called

onsini Animal Shelter in search of

for Mary, the shelter staff knew

    could help. Although Mary was

ically unable to come and visit the

er, the shelter staff asked one of

ini's experienced volunteers tog the cats to Mary and let her

    se. The volunteer brought photos

    short biographies on the available

at the shelter and let Mary do the

    choosing!

Mary chose "Sweet Pea," and sweet

    certainly describes her disposition.

Sweet Pea was surrendered to the shel-

ter by a person who had too many cats.Sweet Pea is thrilled to be the only cat

at Mary's apartment, and she has made

    herself more than comfortable. She

now spends her days keeping Mary

company. It turns out they are a perfect

    match.

For many people, owning a pet makes

them feel less lonely. This is particu-

larly true for senior citizens who live

alone and have less mobility to get out

and socialize. For them, a pet can offer

    companionship and unconditional love.

    The Real Culprit

    A

    December 2012 article in the

    CHATTANOOGA TIMES

    EE PRESS discussed how scien-

use annual bird counts for clues

    ut climate change. The article

ts out that this is a complex

e, with no one simple cause and

ne simple solution, but that cli-

e change is at the root of the

blem, and the song birds dwin-

g population is a way to gauge

    serious is its progression.

y, it appears that the present sit-

on is much like the mining in-

rys practice of bringing a cagedary into the mines so that, when

ies, they know there is not

ugh clean air to sustain life at the

    ksite.

    hroughout the world, feral cats

e been blamed for the dwindling

ulation of song birds. It is true

cats do kill birds and other

dlife, and feral cats have in-

    sed in number at exponential

    s. The phenomenon is not iso-

d to this one particular species.

ed, at close scrutiny, one willthat there are many species

    se population has increased

kedly when they have access to

    e amounts of those resources

sustain the life of that species,

while other species dwindle in num-

bers as the environment no longer

    supports them.

    Equilibrium is sometimes tem-

porarily interrupted by certain cy-cles of nature, but correction occurs

in time as part of any given cycle.

When the imbalance is created by

    human activity, however, the situa-

tion is changed. The unfettered use

    and manipulation of natural re-

sources seems to progress toward a

    tipping point at which na-

    ture is unable to overcome

    the imbalance with cor-

    rective forces that will

    bring equilibrium. An im-

    portant step for coping

    with the distressing situa-

    tion, including the pend-

    ing song bird extinction,

    along with the extinction

    of other desirable wildlife,

is to adopt a lifestyle that

works with nature insteadof against it. One impor-

    tant fact to ponder, and

    might put things in per-

    spective, is that the natu-

    ral world does not

    distinguish a predator

    species as being inher-

    ently bad and prey ani-

    mals as being inherently

    good. Both predator and

prey enjoy an equally dignified and

    valid existence when natures desire

for equilibrium is attained. It is onlythe imbalances that create invasive

    infestations of undesirable propor-

    tions.

So how can we cope with the pres-

    ent situation of climate change,

    dwindling numbers

    and other species? I

first step is to stop b

    such as feral cats. Ins

    recognize that hum

    contributed immens

    change, by creating

tty Hichborn is not one to sit idly.

Shes up at the crack of dawn,

y having time to finish a cup of

ee. Theres so much to do and not

    gh time to do it.

tys life has never been the same

e she started her Shelter Dog Bed

ect in December of 2011. Since

she has made and donated over

plush dog beds to shelters through-

he United States. All of the beds

made from one hundred percent do-

d materials. Her goal for 2013 is tomade and donated 1000 beds. Her

ion is to provide beds and other

fort items such as squeak and tug-

to any rescue dog in need.

tys project doesnt stop there. She

    reached out and recruited two

    king companies, Dog Runner

sport out of Missouri and PETS

    out of Tennessee. They transport

eds to their home base where a dog

ue group picks them up. From

, the beds are distributed to shel-

n need. Through the generosity of

e truckers, a lot of beds are distrib-

    all across the country.

re are so many people, Patty ex-

    s, helping to make everything

k! And nobody is doing it for pay.

y effort is made to operate the proj-

with no money exchanged. And it

    seems to be working.

If youve got some goods to donate, youll most likely find Patty in her

garage sorting through bags of fabric,

    quilts, bedspreads, flannel sheets, blan-

kets, and vinyl; anything that she can

cut and sew. Many generous people

have donated their used bedding, some

holding collection drives in their com-

    munity. Other materials include foam

from couch cushions and batting from

    pillows.

And no donation is too small, or un-

worthy. One day, Patty received a do-

nation of solar covers and a canopy

which, yes, she transformed into com-fortable dog beds. Patty says that pool

    covers and awning materials make

    great dog beds too.

Patty welcomes donations any time of

day. And her place is easy to find: Just

look for her house at 351 Main Street

in beautiful Terryville, Connecticut. Ifher little white car is in the driveway,

that means that shes home. If not, you

can leave donations at her door. Shes

grateful for anything youve got that

she can recycle into usable dog beds.

Patty says that the shelters refuse blan-

kets from the public because they can-

not be washed and dried properly. Patty

cuts the blankets and comforters into

squares, this way, the shelter can use

however many pieces they need and

they can be washed easily. Patty would

love to hear from shelters that have

benefited from her donations and to lether know how the beds have worked

    for them.

    Patty also welcomes volunteers, any-

one that can sort, cut and sew for a few

hours a week. There is always some-

thing to do, not just sewing. No special

    skills needed.

ommon base of their condos, the

fellows began to stroke my skin in

em, purring away like twin motors.

s not to be left out, Georgie, a large

    -and-white 10-year-old just across

way, trilled a hello to me from

    in her condo.

m the Sunshine Spa, where several

ns romped among the adult kitties,

tifully marked gray-and-whitey sat upright like a prairie dog by

creen door to call to staffer Tracy,

visible inside the condo area. As a

of us entered the porch, Toby

ed for its various cat trees, striking

s atop this one and that as if to de-

ately show off his stunning mack-

    stripes. Meanwhile, mischievous

Delilah ran about, sneaking up on

    batting at gray-and-white tuxedo

Ocelots tail. When Ocelot had had

enough, Delilah, easily diverted by a

long, crackly, furry tube, switched to

playing peek-a-boo with us humans, al-

    ternately poking head and paws

    through several different openings of

    the cylinder.

Back inside the main room, Tracy re-

leased Georgie from her condo to en-

gage more freely with several people

that had just arrived. Although she now

had the run of the place, if she so chose,

    Georgiea laid-back darling of a

    senior ladystretched out at full

    length, blissfully making pat-a-cake

motions in the air with her paws.Shed just lie here all day, greeting

    people, observed Tracy. Well, not

    quite: interested in the newcomers,

Georgie got to her feet and strolled over

to rub against their shoes. Only once

she completed her personal hello ritual

did she tip back down to roll around,

stretching her arms and legs and flex-

ing her fingers and toes in the air for

lack of an immediate lap to massage.

As I was preparing to leave and made

the rounds of saying good-bye to theresidents of the various condos, Holden

again reached out a paw for my hand,

and we shook. I almost expected

some of the others to wave.

Now, wouldnt you love that kind of

    enthusiastic welcome when you come

home? How about stopping by to press

a few kitty palms and test the chemistry

    m the Community Center. They

se the recipe, made posters, and

    mmitted themselves to making and

    ing lemonade six times throughout

summer. They raised $100 for the

    lter.

hey're not the only young entrepre-rs who helped Sonsini animals over

    past few months. Chloe Holst-

ubbe and her friends Raina and Sab-

a Lewis took advantage of the

ation of their home- in the center of

nox- to sell tea, lemonade, cookies

    brownies to tourists four times

    oughout the summer. When they

rned that a shelter dog named Anakai

    ded extra medical attention, they

    d a special event including a poster

    laining Anakai's needs. They raised

    0.

ailey Baczek-Kirby also set up shopfront of her house in Pittsfield. She

made stuffed dog toys that she

w would help the cause; she'd either

them, or give them directly to dogs

he shelter. "Pailey came up with the

a herself," her mother Amy said.

e's very proactive, and she got lots

    people involved with this." Pailey

ed $88.40, and also brought some of

stuffed dog toys and items on the

Sonsini wish list that she got neighbors

to donate. "I enjoyed doing this because

I knew I was making a difference," Pai-

ley said. "I like the Sonsini Shelter be-

cause they help animals, even some

who are hurt or sick. I wanted to help

keep the shelter open for animals like

that. It made me happy to do it."

These young folks join the ranks of

    many others -school classes, Brownie

    Troops, Girl Scouts, other individuals

and families - who make it their mis-

sion to help Sonsini care for homeless

animals. They seem to know that it

takes everyone, doing what they can, to

make the shelter possible. It's a com-

    the summer months, animal shel-

s and rescues nationwide are often

flowing with cats and dogs. Berk-

Humane Society (BHS) andadise Feline Adoption Center are

    xception. To help promote adop-

    and ease the overpopulation,

gh, were offering a Choose An

    ption Fee program through the

    of September.

past years, July, August, and Sep-

er are always busiest times at BHS

the shelter caring for an average of

    animals. However, this July and

ust, that number has reached 170,

the trend is expected to continue

    September. As John Perreault, Ex-

ve Director of BHS, explains,re really pushing our capacity.

hough some want to attribute the

ase to the abandonment of animals

econd home owners in the Berk-

    s, John adamantly challenges that

    f. Its complicated, he says. In

he explains it has to do with the

ding cycles of cats. During spring

n season, the litters are easier to

e because people like to adopt

n they plan on being home during

ummer. But often a female cat

go into heat right after delivery.

e resulting and plentiful litters, as

as our other cats and dogs, John

ves, are harder to place because

le tend to be more unsettled and

    going through various lifestyle

ges in late summer older children

g to college, adults returning to

    k. Also, in recent months, BHS as-

sisted in two hoarding situations, one

involving cats and the other dogs,

    which brought 15 additional residents

to BHS.The intention behind the Choose An

    Adoption Fee program is simple:

Finding all the wonderful animals at

BHS the loving, permanent home that

they deserve. When we have an ani-

mal thats sitting here for more than 30

days, its not good for that animal tak-

ing up that space or for other adoptable

animals that need to come here but

maybe cant because we dont have the

space, John says. We hope this pro-

gram will free up desperately needed

room and get more animals adopted.

    Most important, John emphasizes that

BHS will continue to do quality adop-

tions. Our process and integrity will

    not change, he

    notes. Potential

    adopters will

    still need to fill

    out an applica-

    tion and meet

    with a BHS

    adoption coun-

    selor.

    Heres how the

    Choose An Adoption Fee program

works: For any dog or cat who has

been at the shelter for 30 days or longer,

BHS will let you decide what youdlike to donate for their adoption fee.

Also, our senior cats are getting an ad-

    ditional helping hand.

    Thanks to the generosity

of a good BHS friend, the

    $50.00 adoption fee for

    the Senior to Senior pro-

    gram, which places cats

over 7 years old with sen-

    ior citizens over 60 years

    old, will be waived, and

    the regular $100 adoption

fee for our older cats not

    placed through the Senior

    to Senior program will be

    reduced to $50. Before

    going to their new homes,

    all adopted cats and dogs

    leave BHS with appropri-

    ate vaccinations, spayed

    or neutered, dewormed, micro-chipped,

    and more.

So far, the response to the Choose An

Adoption Fee program has been very

    positive. Forty animals have been

placed through it in the last few weeks.

At Purradise in Great Barrington, forexample, seven long-termers have

    found new homes, including Kismet

and Ziggy, who were surrendered in

April, and Andy and Annie, who came

together in May and were adopted to-

    gether. Additionally, the Choose An

    Adoption Fee program has brought

more traffic to both shelters, which has

    resulted in the adoptio

    mals, including puppi

    dogs, who were not elig

MSPCA believes that the focus of those attempting to enact breed-specific

revented by educating both dog owners and the public about dog behavior,

h can achieve the insurance companies goal of reducing the number of dog

    claims they face.

bite claims cost insurance companies a tremendous amount of money. In-

nce companies sometimes attempt to limit their liability for these dog bites by

inating what they perceive as high risk breeds of dogs.

rance companies that cover Massachusetts and may insure black-listed breeds

de Amica, Chubb, Hanover, Hartford, Fireman's, and the Massachusetts FAIR

Most of these companies work on a case by case basis, considering the in-dual dog's behavior and history, and may require a meet and greet with the

and/or a Canine Good Citizen certification, so you should contact them or

k through your agent to be sure theyll cover you and your dog. Its important

The MSPCA opposes policies targeting specific breeds of

    dogs for several reasons:

Such policies discriminate against responsible dog owners who

properly train and socialize their pets. In addition, they mistakenly

ocus on the animal and do not consider the owners behavior and

    esponsibility

Because potential adopters may believe they will be unable to

obtain insurance, they are unwilling to adopt certain breeds of dogs

It is often difficult to determine whether a dog is a mixed-breed

Hi! We are Brianna & Macy and we are cute little tri-coloredguinea pigs. We are 2 years old and we are very friendly.

We were brought to Second Chance because our previousguardian was moving and could not take us. We have livedwith children before and we are great with them! Since we

are a bonded pair, we would prefer to be adopted together. If youre looking for some sweet guinea pigs to brighten your

JULIE IS ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO

    LOVES ALL TOO MUCH ...

and gets jealous of other dogs stealing her

owner's affection. She would do best in an

adult caring experienced home with a

fenced backyard and no competion (dogsor other pets) so she could give and get all

the affection and attention. Julie loves to

play with toys and people. She likes some

male dogs but is "too bossy"

PETEY is a beautiful 3-4 year old neutered male mix

of dalmatian and staffordshire terrier. He is the mostlovable affectionate boy to people and especially

children. The only thing he loves more than people is

his favorite toy . . . A red ball. Petey would do best as

the only dog in a loving home with a backyard and

some humans who like to throw that red ball.
