Mid-Year Student Reports and Interviews

Mid-Year Student Reports go home tomorrow (Friday 21st June) and this will allow time for parents to analyse them prior to next Wednesday’s (26th June) Parent Teacher Interviews. Thank you to parents who have made appointments for interviews via the COMPASS system, for this upcoming Pupil Free Day.

I have asked teachers to try hard to keep to agreed appointment times and not keep parents waiting – we ask parents also to respect the 10 minute interview time slots. We all benefit if we keep on schedule. Interviews are an opportunity to reflect on student learning and achievements in the year to date and to confirm improvement strategies and set goals for Semester 2. Thank you to teachers who have spent many, many hours in recent weeks completing assessments, moderating their judgements with peers and preparing these Reports.

New Business Manger Appointed

We wish Jessie all the very best for her pending Maternity/Family Leave – we expect that she will be with us until the end of this term.

Our new Business Manager will commence in this important role on the first day of Term 3 – Kate Dangerfield was the successful applicant to this recent selection process. Kate has been a Business Manger previously. I am very confident that Kate will make a very positive and immediate impact with us, combining with Jacquie in our General Office Admin team.

Change to Seniors End of Year Bike Ride

The Queenscliff Bike Ride (QBR) planned for December last year was disappointingly cancelled due to some extreme wet weather conditions. Staff have reflected on this annual activity and we have decided that it will no longer be a feature of our extra-curricular program for Seniors. We will in future conduct a Seniors full day bike ride/lunch activity, along the Barwon River in December. Further details of this will be communicated in Term 4.

Whilst the QBR has quite a tradition at Mano, it is becoming an increasingly difficult activity to conduct safely, to fully meet changing Department of Education & Training guidelines and to maintain a very high percentage of student participation. Bike Education sessions will continue to run for Seniors as will an annual Grade 6 Camp. This matter has been recently discussed at the June School Council meeting.

Woolworths Earn & Learn Promotion

We currently have received in excess of 17,000 stickers from Mano families! These have been added to the recording sticker sheets (thank you to students who have helped with this task) and with the promotion activity finishing on Tuesday 25th June, let’s see if we can so achieve even more! Completed sheets will be ‘traded in’ for free school resources, with classroom teachers suggesting how best to enhance our programs – this could be hand on maths materials, art supplies, sports equipment, games and puzzles, literacy resources and reading materials. A big thank you to all who have helped collect the Earn and Learn stickers form Woolworths stores.

Term 3 Pupil Free Day

Term 3 begins on Monday 15th July at 9 am, with a regular weekly Whole School Assembly.

Schools can have four Pupil Free days per calendar year and we propose to have our 3rd on FRIDAY 9th AUGUST (end of week 4 of Term 3).

I know some families have asked for plenty of notice of an upcoming Pupil Free Day, hence this notification. On this day staff will be engaged in a range of professional development activities focusing upon literacy, numeracy and well-being.

Cadbury Chocolate Drive

We have a limited number of Cadbury Fundraiser Chocolates available to purchase from the Office for $40.00 per box (normally $60). Please note these chocolates have an expiry date of August 2019.

Science News The Middles have been investigating magnets and how they attract and repel. They linked this topic with mathematics by measuring the distance between repelling magnets. (pictured)

A big thank you goes out to the families that donated boxes. The Senior students have been using them as light boxes to explore how light travels. We no longer need shoe box donations.

Thanks. Ms Jehu

How to read the dots page of your child’s report:

On Friday, 21st June Semester 1 reports will be sent home with students. Reports will also be available to be downloaded through

the Compass Portal and App. The report contains information on your child’s work and progress this semester, and will include a

graphical summary of your child’s level of achievement, as well as individual student comments written by teachers.

The example above shows the range of student growth and achievement at this point during the year. The yellow band marks the

expected level for students in your child’s grade. Black dots mark your child’s current level of achievement.

The numbered dots (6, 12, 24) show your child’s level when he/she was last assessed for a subject, with the specific number

referring to how many months ago that assessment was made. English and Maths are reported on every semester. Inquiry

subjects are often taught within a 2 year cycle, so (in some instances) the last occasion your child was assessed in that curriculum

area may have been 12, 18, or 24 months ago. The dotted line shows growth since the last time your child was assessed.

It is important that this page be read along with the comment written by your child’s teacher. This summary, written comments, and our Parent Teacher Interviews are all jigsaw pieces which fit together as a part of our Reporting Process.

Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews are now open and will close TOMORROW, 4pm.

Bookings are unable to be made after Friday 21st June, 4pm. This will ensure teachers have sufficient time to prepare for your child’s interview.

Maths @ Mano Numeracy in the Preps

In the Prep department we have been focusing on Rich Learning

Tasks. Rich Learning Tasks extend and challenge all children no

matter the level they may be working at.

Have a go at this activity that Prep children tackled earlier this term:

Here are some work examples from the Preps (using 10 legs):

SCHOOL BANKING School Banking day is FRIDAY

Remember, Friday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement. Term 2 Super Savers Rewards (pictured) include:
