    3/ Essai

Explain what the term austerity means in regards to economics.

How do you think an austerity programmme can help a country regain economic stability?

At the same time, how influential are the protest movements such as Les Indignanos in Spain and

Occupy Wall Street in America in todays economic crisis? Are their demands coherent and

legitimate to you? In your opinion are these protests the last sign of real democracy in todays world?

Points that should be included in the essay

Candidates should introduce the definition of austerity with the positive and negative attributes for the

countries that have been forced to put these programs into place (such as Greece, Spain and Portugal).

The austerity programs are a last-ditch effort to get these economies back on track while they demand

numerous sacrifices from their citizens as well as from European banks and foreign creditors.

    ,

These programs have their positive points; they try to reduce the deficit which hinders a countrys

ability to invest in new and innovative ideas.

They may help stop money going underground as governments will need to answer to creditors about

where all the bail-out money is going if benefits are being cut.

Austerity is the alternative to raising taxes especially on the rich and large corporations who then

decide to go elsewhere with their money or businesses..

However, the negative points are many.

Austerity programs are threatening democracy. Many Greek people believe they have lost their

democratic rights. They are uncertain about their place in the European Union. They may have to

decide between remaining Greek or European. They may have little choice as their severe economic

difficulties can no longer assure them credibility within the European Union.

In Spain, the new movement of Indiganos is a reaction from the younger populations who are desirous

of a comfortable life yet see how they have been left out in the cold by their older citizens who are

    worried about their future retirement.

The current movement Occupy Wall Street has taken their inspiration from the Spaniards.

Austerity is not only for the working class or the unemployed. This new movement has started in thelarge urban centres of America. It is not only about cutting social services but about redistributing

    wealth.

The candidates give their own opinion and should develop an argumentative essay.
