INTRODUCTION
This is a book review for the children’s book “Ang Barumbadong Bus”.
It is written by a Filipino writer Rene O. Villanueva and published by Adarna
Publishing House.
The book is about the discipline and consideration for others. Kas is a
reckless bus. He does not fear or respect anyone on the road. Other cars are
afraid of him. Nothing matters to this reckless bus but himself. Where will
this dangerous journey bring him?
Summary There was a bus whose name is Kas. He acts as if he is king of the
road. All other road vehicles are afraid of him. The taxis, jeepneys and cars
are terrified of him. Kas is not frightened of anyone or anything. He is not
scared of car, jeep, and or taxi. He’s not even afraid of passengers and the
traffic policeman. Kas runs very fast. All of his passengers are frightened.
They would say ‘stop’ but Kas wouldn’t stop until he wanted to. When the
passenger got off the bus, they got very nervous and were trembling. They
told him to run slowly but he didn’t care. He still traveled so fast.
The police officer told him to stop but Kas will only say that he is the
king of the road and no one can stop him. He is hardheaded. He doesn’t
listen to anyone. The plants and the trees said that he should run unhurriedly
but Kas just laugh and continue what he is doing. He also produced huge
smoke to annoy them.

Sometimes Cloud talked to Kas and appealed to him to stop producing
dark smoke because his nose became black already. He almost got tears on
his eyes. Kas was really arrogant. He did not listen to cloud and continue
what he’s doing. Even the sun and the moon wasn’t able stop him.
One day, Kas got drunk. He still managed to haughtily go to the road
and move crisscrossing with his tires. Good thing he has no passengers. He
moves faster and faster and does not bother. He moved faster than the car,
faster than the jeep and faster than the taxi.
He was not satisfied and went faster until bang! He hit an iron post. He
got himself wrecked. They put him in the cemetery of broken vehicles and
never repaired him anymore and now he is useless.
Analysis of CharacterKas
Kas is the main character of the story. Unlike other main characters
that are supposed to be kind, humble and other good attributes, Kas is the
opposite. He is unruly. He doesn’t want to obey anyone or even the law
enforcers. Kas is like an offensive driver. He also drink a lot before running
and doesn’t care to anybody on the road and even to his own passengers. He
is arrogant, irresponsible and very disobedient.
Kas represents the buses in the Philippines. There were many cases of
accidents on the road wherein the causes were the recklessness of the bus

drivers. Most of the time, they also cause the heavy traffic in some main
roads in Metro Manila.
In the Philippines, it is thought that the jeepney is the “king of the
road”. In the story, Kas, the bus, is the king of the road. It is because all
other types of road vehicles were afraid of him. These were car, taxi and
jeepney. There are also other characters like the Cloud, Sun, Plants on the
street, the passengers and the gas pump. Cloud and Sun tried to warn him
but Kas was very conceited and doesn’t want to hear anybody’s opinion. He
thinks that he is invincible and nobody can beat him on anything or in
anyhow. He is like a person who look to himself very high and every one else
are so inferior to him.
In the end, Kas cannot blame anyone but himself. He ended up
wrecked and useless. No one would want to help him or at least fix him.
Before, he looks good outside, but now he looks wasted inside and out. Just
like a person who drinks a lot then drives a car, they would end up miserable
if not lifeless.
Halaman, Ulap, Araw
They represent the nature wherein they are greatly affected by the
dark smoke coming from Kas. They tried to beseech Kas but he did not listen
to them. In real life, people are like Kas. We destroy our environment, we
emit bad gases and in the end we are the one who suffer. The nature could
never talk to us like the ulap, araw and halaman in the story. But they could
bring calamities because of what we did to them.

The sun would give us hotter temperature because we destroyed the
ozone layer because of again, the smoke from our cars and factories.
Mga Pasahero
They are the innocent people who just want to live a safe and clean
environment. Whenever they ride to Kas the bus, their lives are in danger
because of Kas’ speeding. We know that whenever a car or any vehicle is in
speeding condition, they could be prone to accident and endanger lives not
only the passengers but also other people around them or other motorists.
Glug-Glug
Glug-Glug is the gasoline pump wherein Kas get the gasoline. In the
last part of the story, when Kas went to gasoline station it is not to get
gasoline but to get drunk.
Why children should read this book?
This book is especially recommended for eight-year-old kids who are
usually able to read in Filipino and a little in English too. That is why it is a
good thing that the book written in Filipino language so that many children
could understand not only the story but also the moral lesson.
The book is very colorful. The characters are great. The main character
has a bad attitude which is just okay to read because all of us have
sometimes had bad attitude that we need to change for our own betterment.
At the last portion of the book, there are puzzles that kids could answer
like the Kas’ way to Glug-Glug. There is also a quiz-like at the back part in
which children could fill the missing letters.
