Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Forward Proton Detector Overview Andrew Brandt University of Texas at Arlington Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Bring FPD detector group, proton-ID, and physics group together, generate discussion Evaluate current status, problem areas, and issues Identify manpower shortages and attempt to address them Identify obstacles to producing physics results Develop plan for next six months Workshop Goals Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Forward Proton Detector Layout 9 momentum spectrometers composed of 18 Roman Pots Scintillating fiber detectors can be brought close (~6 mm) to the beam to track scattered protons and anti-protons Reconstructed track is used to calculate momentum fraction and scattering angle Much better resolution than available with gaps alone Cover a t region (0 < t < 3 GeV 2 ) never before explored at Tevatron energies Allows combination of tracks with high-p T scattering in the central detector D S Q2Q2 Q3Q3 Q4Q4 S A1A1 A2A2 P 1U P 2I P 2O P 1D p p Z(m) D2 D Veto Q4Q4 Q3Q3 Q2Q2 Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar E Soft Diffraction and Elastic Scattering: Inclusive Single Diffraction Elastic scattering (t dependence) Total Cross Section Centauro Search Inclusive double pomeron Search for glueballs/exotics Hard Diffraction: Diffractive jet Diffractive b,c,t, Higgs Diffractive W/Z Diffractive photon Other hard diffractive topics Double Pomeron + jets Other Hard Double Pomeron topics Rapidity Gaps: Central gaps+jets Double pomeron with gaps Gap tags vs. proton tags Topics in RED were studied with gaps only in Run I 1000 tagged events expected in Run II D Run II Diffractive Topics Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Diffractive Topics and Students! Castle Status Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar In , 10 of the 18 Roman pots were instrumented with detectors. Funds to add detectors to the remainder of the pots was obtained from NSF (mostly for MAPMTs) During the fall 2003 shutdown the final eight detectors and associated readout electronics were installed. Dark current was verified with detectors in place. Shielding was installed because of high rates seen before shutdown Low Voltage Power Supplies were upgraded, installed and tested under full load A2 Quadrupole castle with all four detectors installed Detector Status Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar FPD DAQ and Trigger Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Resolution of TPP Noise Problem Transition Patch Panel is used to interface between ribbon cable carrying signal from the tunnel and flex cable for the AFE Before Shutdown, we saw rms values near 20 (4 or 5 is typical for AFE board) traced to a capacitive coupling on the board Redesigned and replaced all (18) boards during the fall 2003 shutdown After shutdown, rms values are near 4 or 5 This issue delayed integration and diverted manpower, but its successful resolution allows us to proceed towards integrated physics Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Front View of PW08 (11/10/03) FPD Readout Thanks Daniel! Mike will describe operations, highlights include 18 pots routinely inserted once/day, and very little to do during accesses Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Data taking with integrated Phase I Add FPD triggers to global list Complete funding and implementation of Phase II Preliminary results on several physics topics Goals Data taking with integrated Phase II Add FPD triggers to global list Published results on dN/dT and Z Preliminary results on several physics topics including double pom Andrew Brandt FPD Rio Workshop Mar Summary Early FPD stand-alone analysis shows that detectors work, will result in elastic dN/dt publication (already 1 Ph.D.) Full 18 pot FPD now integrated into D readout (detectors still work), LM + Trigger still lagging Commissioning of detectors and trigger STILL in progress Need responsibility taken for every task (not just a name in a box) Looking forward to an exciting and productive workshop
