NREGA : Paradigm Shift

• National Rural Employment Guarantee Act: 2005 - From Programme to Act

• Enacted by Parliament in Sept 2005

OBJECTIVES

• To provide

-Hundred days of wage employment

-Unskilled manual work to any adult who seeks work

-Livelihood security to rural households

• Creation of durable community assets

NON-NEGOTIABLES

• Hundred days of wage employment on demand in a financial year to the registered households

• Payment on weekly basis

• Equal wages to men and women

• Ban on contractors and labour-displacing machines

• Only works identified by gram panchayat, Mandal Parishad and Zilla Parishad
